Thanks, Mike.

I actually did it via Brian’s instructions, but these instructions are a good second choice.

Will save for future reference, since it’s always good to have multiple ways of doing something like this in case one does not work.

Tom,

Once IE is open go to the Tools Menu (ALT+T), Internet Options (O), then in the General Tab that opens as the first in the Internet Options Dialog you should already be sitting in the edit box for Home Page.  You can enter a URL, or a list of URLs with an Enter entered between each one, to set the page or pages that open as your default page(s) when IE is started.

Re: Cisco IP Communicator?

Michael Mote

Hi James!  I have limited experience using Cisco IP Communicator just like you.  In my experience though, I have had to use another application in conjunction with communicator to make it work.  In the menus, you can set up things like audio settings, but after that, it’s virtually useless for a screen reader user.  I’ve been told that the Cisco IP communicator looks very much like a desk phone.  In order for us to use it, we need another application like the cisco Desktop agent to make things work.  I hope I’m helping you with this.

Re: Jaws announces the same web page link differently when in IE11 or Firefox

That can be typical on some websites when switching back and forth between browsers. I have all of my students make sure that they have at least two browsers installed. I have some college webpages that won’t even read some links or buttons in IE and then FF is the solution and the same can be for the opposite.

Until now, I was using IE11 with the BestBuy Canada web site.

I just made a purchase using Firefox. The link to get to the shopping cart is labeled differently in FireFox then from what it is in IE11.

In Ie11, Jaws announces the second link after the search box as:

    link cart

In FireFox, Jaws announces the same link as:

    link GG 1

I also noticed that Jaws announces the first link differently in Ie11 from FireFox.

That first link after the search box is the submit search link.

In FireFox, refreshing the screen does not change anything.

I thought that the screen reader used the alt text field in the HTML code. Why does Jaws announce differently the same link in the same web page in IE11 from Firefox?

Can anyone explain what is happening? Thank you.

How To Set A Particular Web Page As Your Default Web Page In Internet Explorer

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

Due to some recent computer issues here, I had to take internet Explorer 11 back to its default settings.

I would like to make a certain web page my default web page when Internet Explorer is launched.

How do I do this in Internet Explorer 11?

I’m using Windows 7 and Jaws 18 here.

New Scouting Report on Silverlight Instability

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Some of you may remember this thread from several months ago.  Brian, one or two others, and I were discussing the problem.  First, it still crashes.  However, properly handled, recovery won’t necessarily involve rebooting, saving time, aggravation, and wear-and-tear on your hardware and OS.  The first step is to get the focus on the offending program, which may require patience.  When you see it, Double click, space, or both, to make sure it’s properly  highlighted.  Press Alt-F4.  Check your JAWS cursor to see if you have a message that IE is not responding, followed by the appropriate choices.  Click on Close program.  If you don’t see the desired effect immediately, perform the steps again, or until the program closes.

At this point, you may have lost JAWS, and think  your irretrievably frozen, but you might actually b on the verge of salvation.  Simply try reloading JAWS.  If it comes back, try alt-tabbing around.  If that works, you have saved your session, and can begin reloading Internet programs.  If  you run multiple tabs, only the offending tab should have shut down.

HI George

We no longer own Quicken, so I can't make statements for Quicken 2017, but the team made significant changes for Quicken 2015 and Quicken 2016 to work with screen readers. There is a small JAWS script that should come as part of the JAWS package that helps with a few components. Are you having problems with a specific task?

Also, the Quicken apps for iOS and Android work pretty well and can be much quicker at basic tasks than the desktop product.

My history list won’t stay cleared.  Please try this:

1. Enter 30083 in the search field, then search in anything—findings aren’t what we’re testing, so it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t find it.

2.  Type another string like 44444 and send it through any search.

3.  Exit Research It, then go back in.

4.  Check to see if the entries are still in history.

5.  Tab to the item “Maintain History” and uncheck that checkbox.

6.  Select Clear history, then select Ok.

Now, when you go back in, are the items still in the search field when you press up and down arrows?

I cannot get it to clear and stay clear.

Thanks,

Subject: Re: JAWS 18 and RDP Sessions

Well when I disconnect from the session I leave JAWS running. When I
reconnect, sometimes I get speech, but more often than not I have to
unload JAWS and reload it again and speech returns. Interestingly
enough, I have a computer at home on which I am not seeing this
problem. However, 2 other computers in a separate location of the
same model have the speech issue, and two of a different model in yet
another location have the problem as well. I am currently waiting to
hear from VFO Support, but I really need to get this resolved sooner
than later, so I decided to reach out to this list as well.

That's interesting. Sounds like when you connect to the virtual
desktop using RDP, you don't get speech from the computer. Do you
have to manually load JAWS, or does that even work?

The inconsistency of the speech is what is baffling. It seems that if

insert+there are
other times when speech is available immediately as it should be when
I start the RDP session.

Hi Jonathan! Are you sure that the speech you are hearing is from
your computer, and not from the Remote Desktop itself? One way you
can tell is by listening, and seeing if some of the words are cut off,
or the speech is a bit sluggish. If this is the case, you may want to
go into the advanced settings, and uncheck the Remote access boxes,
and then reboot your machine.
After the computer comes back up, go back into settings, and reenable
the remote access options by checking the appropriate boxes. Reboot
again, and then try to connect to the remote desktop. I had to do
this once when using Citrix Xenn Desktop and it solved my issues.
I should also point out that when you log into a remote desktop
session, in most cases, you don't need to worry about the log on
screen anyway, because the remote computer should already be on. I hope
this info helps!

Hi All,

I am having difficulty using JAWS in RDP sessions. Since the
computers to which I am connecting must be logged on 24/7, I use
Disconnect instead of Logoff to terminate the session. The problem I
am having is that quite often when I connect via an RDP session,
speech is not available with JAWS.
I usually have to end the JAWS process through Task Manager and then
restart it again to have speech. However, this doesn’t always work,
and I have to restart the entire computer to resolve it. Other times
it connects without difficulty and speech is immediately available.
I have checked to run JAWS and logon and after all users using
Always, but this hasn’t helped. The only consistent connection I can
get is with a computer on which JAWS is registered with my auth code.
I was under the impression that the auth code wasn’t needed for
computer running JAWS remotely, however, and so this doesn’t explain
the inconsistency I’m seeing. The problem is happening on several
different desktops with 2 running WIN7 and 1 running WIN10. Does
anyone have ideas on this?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Interesting, usually when I think of programs that have to remain

about the user login state.

Hi James!  In my experience with Cisco IP Communicator, JAWS doesn’t read it at all.  It does read some of the settings, if you go to the program group, and look for audio settings and things like that.  The IP communicator doesn’t really do anything that I can tell without another application like Cisco Desktop agent or something like that.
