Hello everyone. As the other thread has gone on for a while and people may miss the important message sent by Curtis (At least, I think it was him; sorry if it’s not, I deleted the message already) describing a workaround for the problem of JAWS not being able to engage with the context menu through standard means, I thought I would explain in another message, as well as outlining my own ideas about this problem and what is actually happening.
First, while NVDA can interact as normal with the context menu, JAWS cannot, and it doesn’t matter what JAWS version you are using, new or old. The problem as I see it is that, normally, when an item is “clicked” to activate the right-click or context menu, the user is automatically taken outside the virtual buffer in order to activate a menu choice. This could be with the arrow keys, or it could be with a keystroke that activates your menu option of choice. Now, for whatever reason, while pressing the context menu key does activate the menu, JAWS stays in virtual mode, and therefore, your arrow keys and letter keys won’t interact with the menu at all, but instead will do what you’d normally xpect in reading mode as if you hadn’t activated the menu at all. To solve this, turn the virtaul cursor off with insert-z after you hit the context menu key. Jaws will not immediately announce “context menu” but you will be in it, and hitting down arrow will alert JAWS that this is, in fact, what you want to interact with. You can also, of course, press a letter to activate the menu option instead of the arrows. For example, I’ve just gone to the webpage of one of my favourite podcasts on podbay.fm. I find the episode I want, and go to the download link. I press the context menu key, then insert-z, and then the letter k to activate the save file dialogue box.

This was mentioned during Freedom Scientific’s session covering new features in JAWS, currently streaming on ACB Media 5 as I write this. According to their announcement you can purchase a JAWS home annual license for 3 or 5 years at a 20% discount. I’m uncertain if this special ends on July 31 along with their other specials and I have not yet checked to verify whether this discount also applies to Fusion or Zoomtext. As a reminder several hardware magnification products are also being temporarily offered at discounted prices. In addition, an OpenBook license is being offered for only $195.00 and the Pearl Camera is available for $200.00.

If you are up to date on your SMA, a SMA renewal for $120 that covers two years is a better deal. This is what I did. But if you are behind in your SMA then go for the annual license.

Hi Morey, There is no difference navigating ribbons from one JAWS version to another. My guess is that your ribbons are minimized rather than maximized. Get onto the upper ribbon by pressing Alt, and then press Control F1 to maximize them. They should then behave properly. David |

Ah. So, still an extra keystroke here, but, not only does what you described work...but you can turn off the virtual cursor 8after* hitting the context menu/right click to access the menu. In other words, do what you would normally do, accessing the right click menu on a link by whatever means you choose -- JAWS will not say anything, but Firefox should make the activation sound if you have those enabled. Then, turn off the virtual cursor,a nd hit the down arrow...you'll see your menu options.

Focus on the link with the virtual cursor for JAWS turned on. Now, with Insert z, turn off the virtual cursor and tab back and forth until you are sure you are focused on the correct link. Then, activate the right click function (Shift F10 in my case). Use arrow keys to review the menu. The JAWS latest update seems to have broken something inasmuch as, with NVDA, this work-around is not necessary. Cordially, Curtis Chong |
