Got it, Brian, and hardware accelleration is now un-checked.

The options menu sructure in version 52 seems very different than it was in previous versions.

Tom,

Try opening a new blank tab and pasting the following into the web address:   about:preferences#advanced

You should then be on the Advanced Pane of the Preferences settings.  The second section of the Advanced Pane is "Browsing" and the third item is a checkbox for, "Use hardware acceleration when available," which is checked on by default.  There is a keyboard shortcut to toggle it if you don't wish to even hunt for the item that toggles it:  ALT+Shift+R

Kristoffer,

To throw something else into the mix, if you have not considered Toshiba's Canvio line I would suggest you give those a look as well.

My 2TB Canvio, that's about the size of a pack of cigarettes and was one of the earlier USB 3.0 units, has been very durable with less than tender handling (though no abuse, either).

Re: Firefox Question

Mario

tom, after pressing alt, t for tools, o for options, you should find a
combo box. press the space bar on it, now you can arrow down to the
advanced category. however, when you're at the point you want to get
there and JAWS goes quiet, wait about 5 seconds, arrow up, wait a few
seconds, and then down again. you might have to repeat this up and down
move after 5 seconds again before you can down arrow to the advanced
category, tab once or twice, make sure you're in the general sub
category and continue to tab to the acceleration check box.

the sync options causes the silence for JAWS. I don't know why this happens.

but my check box for the acceleration is not checked, and yet the JAWS
cursor cannot review what's on the screen. do you have directions what
to do to get the JAWS cursor to review what ever screens are displayed?
I know there are a few things to do but maybe I'm missing a step?

Hello, everyone.

I have just updated to Firefox 52, and am trying to get to the hardware
acceleration button to turn it off, since I understand this allows the Jaws
cursor to work better.

However, I can't ghet to the hardware acceleration function using the
instructions I have. Here are those insttructions:

"You can get to the hardware acceleration function with the options
screen, under the tools item in the menu bar. Find advanced settings/general
and it will be there. Again, you want to turn hardware acceleration off."

I can get to the options screen, but can't navigate to advanced
settings/general as I had been able to do earlier.

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 18 here.

Once you are in the adjust voice dialogue you will see the list of profiles as you said. If you select the vocalizer expressive profile then tab over 4 times you will find “all context. This is where you can make voice changes. Tab again and you will be in a list of the vocalizer expressive voices you installed.

I hope this helps a little more.

Hi Everyone, I’m stuck and need a refresher on switching to and selecting a different voice profile.

I want to switch to Nathan Premium which is installed on my version of JAWS 18 but can’t find the voice.

I use the Control plus Insert plus S keystroke combination and end up with a slow-talking female in the Vocalizer synthesizer selection. I can’t find the other voices as the Tab or Enter keys do nothing.

I also tried to follow the instructions in the Daisy book on Voice Profiles but did not get the advertised behavior and am hoping for some help from the list to correct something I am doing in error or omission.

Thanks as always, Mitch

Yet another resounding yes: no need for virtual machines if you want to run
command-line tools such as Git, Python, PSQL (PostgreSQL) and others, as you
can do so thanks to Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in 64-bit Anniversary
Update and later.

I've been aware of it for a while and soon expect to be in a position to try
it. For a full Linux installation (X Window System, server applications,
etc.), one still needs virtualization, but it's the command line and console
environment that I use most in Linux anyway.

The other option would be to run Windows 10 on a Linux host inside a KVM
virtual machine.
