Are you sure you have the settings to start Jaws both at startup and after startup>

Under Jaws Options, basic, automatically start jaws:

Start JAWS Options dialog‑
Start JAWS at the logon screen check box‑ checked‑
Start JAWS after logon for all users check box‑ checked‑
Start JAWS after logon for this user: Combo box‑ Always

If so, you may have a sound card issue so you could go to the sound settings, and in there somewhere is a trouble shoot problems with the sound card.

Glenn / Lenny

Hi,
I would not lose any sleep over having defragged an SSD, it won't break it if you do that, the truth is, that SSD drives are fast enough that you won't get any benefit from doing that, and your SSD drive has many write cycles to it, but they are indeed limited, so a few defrags won't hurt and may not help.
But if you have deleted a lot of really really large files, it may help on rare occasions.
Just don't be scared if you do this, thinking that it would help and worried that it may hurt the drive, it likely didn't hurt anything.
Here is how it is described by Crucial.com, who sells disk drives:

Should You Defrag an SSD?

If you’ve ever owned a traditional hard drive, you have probably defragged it at some point along the way. This is because defragging a hard drive is necessary
due to the way it is built. In recent years, many people have been replacing their HDD with an SSD due to the impressive
technology
 and additional
benefits.
Those who are used to defragging their hard drives may wonder if it is necessary to defrag an SSD. We answer that question below.

Should I defrag my SSD?

The short answer is this: you don't have to defrag an SSD.

To understand why, we first need to look at the purpose of defragmenting a drive. Defragging ensures that large files are stored in one continuous area
of a hard disk drive so that the file can be read in one go. Mechanical drives have a relatively long seek time of approximately 15ms, so every time a
file is fragmented you lose 15ms finding the next one. This really adds up when reading lots of different files split into lots of different fragments.
However, this isn't an issue with SSDs because the seek time are about 0.1ms. You won’t really notice the benefit of defragged files — which means there
is no performance advantage to defragging an SSD.

SSDs move data that's already on your disk to other places on your disk, often sticking it at a temporary position first. That's what gives defragmenting
a disadvantage for SSD users. You’re writing data you already have, which uses up some of the NAND's limited rewrite capability. So, you get no performance
advantage whatsoever, but you are using up some of the limited rewrite capability.

To summarize, do not defrag an SSD

The answer is short and simple — do not defrag a solid state drive. At best it won't do anything, at worst it does nothing for your performance and you
will use up write cycles. If you have done it a few times, it isn't going to cause you much trouble or harm your SSD. You just don’t want this to be a
scheduled, weekly type thing that takes away from the finite number of SSD rewrites. There are other ways to
clean up and increase speed
on your computer. There are even reasons for
formatting an SSD,
encrypting SSDs,
and ways to
increase storage space on a SSD.
They all serve a purpose — there just isn’t a reason to defrag an SSD.

There are a couple of ways you can determine what kind of local drive is inside your computer.  If it contains a hard drive, you should be able to feel or hear it spinning when you place your hand or ear on the enclosure.  If it contains an SSD, there will be no mechanical noise of any kind because there is no motor or cooling fan.  You could also check the properties of your local drive by focusing on it on the desktop and pressing alt-enter to bring up the properties page.  Sometimes, you can tell from the properties whether the drive is an HD or SSD.  But if you want to be absolutely certain what type of drive your computer has, download and install a free utility called Belarc Advisor that will create a profile of your computer and provide the model number and other information about its local drive, which should be helpful:

Hi, John.

Method 1 of 4

Check via Task Manager

Step 1: Open the Task Manager either by using Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys, or right-clicking on the taskbar and then clicking Task Manager option.

Step 2: Switch to the full mode if it opens in small view.

Step 3: Under the Performance tab, click on the disk on the left side to know the actual name of the drive on the right side. The name usually indicates the type of the drive (SSD or HDD).

If your PC has more than one internal drive, you will have to click on all of them (on the left-side) one after another to know their properties.

Method 2 of 4

Check if your PC has SSD via Disk Management

Step 1: Right-click on the Start button on the taskbar and then click Disk Management option to open its window.

Step 2: On the left side (as shown in the picture below) of the window, you can see all internal and external drives currently connected to your PC. To know if a drive is HDD or SSD, right-click on it and then click Properties.

Step 3: The General tab displays the actual name of the drive which usually indicates what kind of drive (SSD or HDD) it is.

Method 3 of 4

Check if your PC has SSD using File Explorer

Step 1: Open the File Explorer and navigate to This PC.

Step 2: Right-click on a partition drive and then click Properties to open its properties dialog. Note that if you have more than one physical drive, you need to make sure that you are right-clicking on a drive that belongs to the physical drive that you want to know whether it’s SSD or HDD.

Step 3: Under the Hardware tab, you can see if your PC has SSD or HDD.

If your PC has more than one drive, the Hardware tab lists all drives and highlights only the physical drive where your currently selected partition drive

is located.

Method 4 of 4

Check your PC has SSD via Device Manager

Step 1: Open the Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start button on the taskbar and then clicking on the Device Manager option.

Step 2: In the Device Manager window, expand Disk drives tree to see the name of the drive which also includes the type of the drive (SSD or HDD).

moderated Re: Navigating Microsoft Excel with JAWS 2021

Van Lant, Robin

Sharon,

As others have said, there really isn’t a way to do this. I am a project manager and also have a personal task list in Excel.  Because of the limitation, I have the following methods I use.  Maybe this helps for what you are trying to accomplish.

If I’m working on a project with multiple categories, I will do one of the following three approaches.  In each case, individual tasks are on a single row with the task, a Colum for owner, due date, status and notes.

  1. Place the section heading in column A with no other detail in that row, then place all related tasks in the rows below it, where the task is listed in Column B, leaving column A blank for each row. This allows me to use the alt down arrow method people mentioned in Column A to jump from section to section.  The downside of this is that, is that you cannot see the headings if you use the auto filter function to sort tasks based on some criteria such as status or owner, because  the header rows do not have that info. I suppose a work around for this is to always include “blanks” when using auto filter, so they will pull in all header rows. .
  2. My second method, which I’m currently using for a work assignment is to list the header and subsequent tasks sequentially, but separate each section with a blank row.  Using the Alt down arrow method then jumps to the first and last item in each section fairly quickly.  For the sake of my sighted teammates, I have the tasks indented a bit, but using boldface on the header or something like that would also work.  The downside of this approach is that having entire blank rows throws off auto filter, so I cannot easily filter on status or such.
  3. While I have not used it for a project plan, a third approach is to use column A for your header and include the header at the beginning of each related row.  This is a common practice for people handling a lot of data.  It would then allow you to use auto filter in column A to only display rows related to that specific header.  For example, rather than sorting a large group of employees with a  header row for each office location, I would put the office location in column A for each employee in that office, allowing me to then auto filter to show only the employees in a given office location.

Now, two other ideas come to mind as I am writing this. I don’t have the time to explore them right now, but they could potentially work.

  • Excel allows you to label a cell then use Control G to jump to a cell by name. I did this once on a massive spreadsheet where I wanted to jump to different sections. I named the cell, then in Control G, rather than typing a cell coordinate, I could arrow down a list of named cells. I think I’ll have to play with this idea!
  • I also think I read something about creating links to specific cells. You might then be able to create your own version of a table of contents where you can hit a link to a specific section. I’d only spend the time on this if it’s a file you’ll use for quite a while, but an interesting idea.

Gotta run to a meeting. Let me know if any of this helps or if you want me to give more on naming cells.

Robin

Hello everyone! in this article I will speak a little about
accessibility and usability, specificly on Whatsapp Web, and sharing
a script, users of screen
reader, can work on Whatsapp by the computer with more autonomy,
practicality and confidence.

The informations about the script and its installation are bellow: :

To use the scripts, it is necessary to have the extension
Tampermonkey for your browser (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox,
Opera, Microsoft Edge ou Safari).
After that, just access the script, which will be recognized by
Tampermonkey, and click on install.

WhatsappWebWithMoreAccessibility

After installing the script for Whatsapp Web,
WhatsappWebWithMoreAccessibility, when accessing the app, you must
wait for the application to load and then use the shortcut ALT + S.
If the script is deactivated, the message:
Script activated successfully will be displayed; if the script is
already activated, an alert will be given with the message Script
disabled. When you deactivate it, all elements and shortcuts created
by it will be removed, except the activation and deactivation
shortcut.

Added elements and labels

With WhatsappWebWithMoreAccessibility enabled, the following
modifications will be applied:
• Before the panel with the chat list there will be a level 1 header
H1 to facilitate navigation via the screen reader, by pressing the 'h'
key or the
number '1' in the navigation mode;
• After opening a chat, at the beginning of the contact / group area
there will be a level 2 H2 header, with the label "Active chat +
CONTACT / GROUP NAME", which can be accessed by pressing the 'h' key
or number 2 in browse mode; • The emogi buttons will be labeled
above the message writing field in the footer; • After the message
writing field, there will be a button with the label "Record voice
message" if the text field is clear, or "Send text message" if it is
filled; • When you click on the "Record Voice Message" button, a
"Cancel recording" button, the recording time and another button
with the label "Send voice message"
will appear below the message field;

Shortcut keys

After enabling WhatsappWebWithMoreAccessibility, the following
shortcut keys are available:
• ALT + a: focus on the options for choosing the type of attachment
to be sent in the active chat; • ALT + B: focus on the search field
and label it as "Search chat and contacts ..."; • ALT + C: focus on
the chat list; • ALT + E: puts the focus on the message writing
field and labels it "Write a message (name of the active chat)"; •
ALT + L: opens an options box to select the language of the script

the desired option, the script messages will be in that language; •

Hello

I have "whatsapp web" on my windows PC installed.

Although this is a official windows program Most of the tasks seem
not accessable with Jaws and some of the buttons are not labelled.

Are there any shortcut keys?

I was able to compose a message but So far I was not able to access
the send button.

Reaching received messages is also a real challenge - at least for me.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds strange, but if you did not install the December release of JAWS 2020 and you have JAWS 2020 on your system, then try installing that update. See quote below from that release notes.
• In the 2020 December Update, we have included a fix that will help users of ZoomText and Fusion in the future when they uninstall that version yet continue to use later versions. There was a problem in earlier 2020 versions where it was impacting shared components with other versions such as the most recent release. We encourage anyone who still has the 2020 versions installed, to please update now even if you are not currently using it.

Really this is nothing to do with Russian Composers – I am quite happy to go with my Music instructor on spelling etc. .

I had the same generic speech dictionary problem with the Jaws pronunciation of Coronavirus last year which  I had to amend,  with all pronunciation marks multiple times  had to be inserted.

That is I had to put in coronavirus by itself, coronavirus with a full stop, then the same word with a comma, then with a colon and so on. whilst in NVDA just the basic amendment once without any accompanying punctuation worked.

Hello everyone

In the last part, of the composer's name "Shostakovich", add the letter e after the letter O, and if you are using Eloquence, you should get Shostakoevich. This alteration in the JAWS Default Dictionary file, may work for other synthesizers as well.

Are we talking about Shostakovich, the composer?

If so, the name was misspelled from the beginning.

Eloquence mispronounces it terribly, while Vocalizer Expressive does a fine job.

Eloquence says something like sha stack  a kov vich

But if it is spelled like this, Eloquence gets it pretty close:

Shaustahcoevvich

Hi David,

I just put the name, Shostakovic, into my JDF exactly the way you did along with the replacement, and I then placed a question mark, colon, exclamation mark, a period, a comma and a semicolon after the name and they all read the same.  See below;

 Shostakovic.

Shostakovic:

Shostakovic,

Shostakovic?

Shostakovic!

Shostakovic;

Are you putting a space at the beginning or at the end of the name in either the actual or replacement field?  if so, do not!

Also, these are my other settings, Applies to language, All Languages, Speak replacement word using language, Default, and the case sensitive is not checked.

When you exit are you saving your changes?  When I close I use the, Control + S, keystroke then I press, Alt + F4.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

There is a constant dictionary annoyance  which I find with Jaws.

So for example Eloquence on Jaws  will mis-pronounce a name like Shostakovic. I amended this in my Jaws dictionary tonight to Shosta co vic to make it approximate to something like the correct pronunciation

.

However in practice this is not enough, because if Shostakovic is followed by a full stop. A comma, a colon then the    amended pronunciation will not work for me. This means that for every word I want to put in the Jaws dictionary has to be entered at least 4 time.

The first time without any punctuation, the next 3 times with a full stop, a comma, and a colon.

Depending on what I am trying to read I sometimes have to add the word 6  times to the dictionary because you have to also include version of the word with a question mark and exclamation mark and so on.

I assume that there is nothing I can do to avoid this annoyance at this time but surely it is not too great a coding challenge for VFO to make the Jaws pronunciation dictionary just a little more intelligent and smart and less dumb?
