Re: Changing From One License Type to Another: Additional Costs?
You could try that. But be sure to install it on an empty hard drive in case you have data you want to save on the one with Windows 11. And, if you can believe it, my sighted friend Markus (Yes, that's "Markus" with a "K", not a "C"), helped me to install Windows 10, with narrator! Isn't that amazing that you can install Windows using Narrator?

Hey there Meow Meow! Your name makes me smile! To turn off automatic updates in new versions of Windows like Windows 10, which doesn't seem to have that parameter in the Control Panel like other previous versions (That really makes me mad), you actually have to create a registry key. If it's not already there, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. create a new key called "WindowsUpdate". within that key, create another key called AU. Within that key, create a Dword value called NoAutoUpdate. Set that value to 1. If you have Winaero Tweaker, which also helps, set the parameter of Disable Windows Update to checked, and you should be good to go. It does sound complicated, but it's definitely worth it if you don't wanna be bothered with constant updates!

Hi Annabelle!
You woun't hear that from me! I've been the computer industry since 1980 and I have always felt that automatic updates are a very bad idea. The problem with automatic updates is that you may get an update that does bad thing to your computer, and while you might be able remove the update, the automatic update feature will just put it back again. It is always better to wait a while to see what others are saying about an update and if the news isn't good, you just don't install it!

Like you, I like the idea of owning my copy, even if it becomes outdated if I don't renew the SMA. The annual license is great for removing the barrier of entry for new JAWS users, but feels like a fleeting thing that you lose if you cannot afford the annual license one year.
If your last SMA was 2002, you may not be able to switch base to even a professional SMA at this point. You are probably best to call FS Sales and ask about your situation.

I purchased my SMA with a college trust fund back in 2002, as I was going to school back then. The SMA was a "Professional" license. I want to try to change my recent home annual license to a perpetual license, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to upgrade from one license to another. Am I right when I hear that a perpetual license never expires?

The instructions I’m providing were done on a system running Windows 10, Fusion 2020, and Word 2019 so if any of my steps differ from yours, it might be due to that. Also, when searching for colors, I’m assuming whoever marked the color in your document used the standard color blue and not some derivation thereof. From the top of the Word document containing the blue text, do the following: - Press ctrl + h to open the find and replace dialog.
- You should be located In the find what text box but you can press alt + n to move there and type an * which is a wildcard to find anything.
- Press alt + m to open the more options.
- Press alt + u to tick the box to use wildcards.
- Press alt + o to open the Format drop-down list and arrow to Font and press enter.
- Press alt + c to open the Font color drop-down box and down arrow until you hear Standard colors and then right arrow to blue and press enter.
- Tab to the Ok button and press enter.
- Press alt + f to initiate the find next and you should be taken to the first occurrence of blue text in your document.
- Press esc to close the find and replace dialog so you can repeatedly press shift + F4 to navigate to the next occurrences of blue text within the document.
I hope this helps but write back if the steps are confusing, don’t work, or if you have more questions. I've noticed the same thing; my guess, off the top of my head, is that something has chhanged with the 2-chromium based browsers.
The question is what; and the work around or fix.
Will be interested in the feedback of others on this.

As I understand it, JAWS is mine to keep, even if I don't renew the SMA, but eventually the software won't work as Windows and applications keep progressing.

You make a very good point, I installed Firefox 101 to avoid the context menu problems people are talking about in 102.
I still wish that Microsoft would resurrect Internet Explorer, but first take out all the active x crap. I always disabled it as a first step anyway. JAWS has never supported any browser as well as it supported Internet Explorer.

Same here, although I've never really been a fan of Firefox, this problem with Chromium is becoming such an annoyance that I have just installed Firefox 101 and have been learning how to use it and may end up making it my default browser. Which would be fitting in a way, I'm already using their email client, Thunderbird.

I've noticed the same thing; my guess, off the top of my head, is that something has chhanged with the 2-chromium based browsers.
The question is what; and the work around or fix.
Will be interested in the feedback of others on this.

Re: Curiosity: What makes people choose Jaws over NVDA?
Then there’s support. If you want to get NVDA support, you really have to rely on the community, but you can hit FS directly. Updates are also more frequent with JAWS, at least one a month now. All the best Steve

Hi James, I find JAWS’s Office support better than NVDA’s, and also find it more responsive in Office applications. Some of its productivity features are also really good like text analyzer. This could be just my impression, but I also find the NVDA add-on process a bit messy, EG. a lot of add-ons always seem to break when NVDA is updated and it takes a while for them to get fixed. While I’m sure that does happen to external scripts and JAWS, it doesn’t feel as though it happens nearly as often. Where do you think it's weakness's are? I've been a long time NVDA user and occasionally dabbled in Jaws here and there over the past year or so. Something I commonly see is that Jaws still seems to have better braille support. I also don't know how many organisations would be super happy with the idea of putting NVDA on a work computer, so there's that. I used Jaws growing up, so I have a fair amount of experience in both readers. Using Jaws recently also told me that the overall look and feel hasn't really changed either, so there was next to no learning curve when it came to reacquainting myself. I know NV access have been working on this, but to my understanding Jaws also seems to have better UIA support, something that can only be a positive! Looking forward to hearing from you, James

Re: Curiosity: What makes people choose Jaws over NVDA?
Hi,
Just efficiency really.
A simple example is reading Email in Outlook 365. JAWS will continue to read the whole Email as soon as you open it, but NVDA will only read the first line and give all that garbage about HTML document and stuff. NVDA is simply not as polished as JAWS. In fact, Narrator does a better job with outlook than NVDA.
Just my personal opinion, but I'd say if you're a home user, NVDA is fine, but when the rubber hits the road, JAWS has more chops.
All the best
Steve

Re: Duplicating JAWS settings on a second computer
I agree with doing it this way, especially after I had the import utility refuse to import any of my settings from an export file. It is now also my preferred way to backup my settings.
