I’ll let you know if the screen shade really does effectively hide the screen during the Zoom meeting session.

I believe this was successfully done by others last year which is why I’m going to give it a try tonight.

The only thing I don’t know right now is whether to turn on the screen shade before or after I share my screen during the Zoom meeting.

Will be an interesting experiment.

Hi all. One thing to consider is whether or not the Screen shade feature only works on a local screen. I saw the initial message indicating that you wanted to use this as part of a Zoom meeting. Sharing your screen may not include the option to hide the information, because of the way Zoom shares the information. I am hoping the Screen shade feature will accomplish what you want it to do in this environment.

Subject: Screen Shade Question

Hello, everyone.

This evening, I will begin teaching an online class via Zoom where I will occasionally need to hide the text of a file I will be using.

I understand I can do this via the Jaws screen shade function.

I can invoke the screen shade function via insert space F11, and when I do this, I’m told whether the screen shade is on or off.

This is easy enough to do, but I have also discovered that the screen shade function can be accessed in the Jaws utilities menu.

However, when I arrow down to screen shade and hit enter or the spacebar, nothing happens.

Am I missing something?

I obviously can invoke the screen shade function via insert space F11, but thought it would be nice to be able to do this quickly in the utilities menu.

Thanks for any help!

I’ve used this when running training and  shading the screen when I wanted students not to see a specific screen then turning it back on with my keystroke. So, there are uses for this. You cannot do thin Zoom itself as easily.

I’ve used this before, it worked and it will hide your screen from meeting attendees. You can also assign this to a keystroke in the keyboard manager.

I am not sure that would be easier. It certainly takes up more keystrokes. Insert space then F11 is only two commands.

I think the only way to consistently tell whether the screen shade is on or off is via the insert space F11 keyboard command.

This is unfortunate, because toggling it on and off in the utilities menu would certainly be easier.

Hi,

Yes, using Screen Shade will not speak from the Utilities Menu and if you are wanting to be sure you have screen shade on it would be best to use the keyboard command.

Given the percentage of up time, this is an inaccurate statement.  One can always count on scheduled down time for maintenance, and unscheduled down time in the event of natural disasters.  That's not a huge amount of down time.

I doubt that JAWS Tandem has quite the redundancy of servers that something like TeamViewer or Microsoft Quick Assist does, but that makes sense given the sizes of their respective user bases.

But calling it a "lottery" as to when Tandem will be working is not supported by history.  There would have been little interest in the fact that Tandem was down if it were in that state frequently.  The exception state was the news part of this.

Hi, Ashleigh. Yes, Tandem can definitely not work. The reason for this is that, when you use Tandem, you are actually using the servers on FreedomScientific.com. If, for any reason, the FreedomScientific.com website is down, or even having trouble on their servers, this can cause Tandem not to work. It doesn't always mean, though, that every time FreedomScientific has trouble with its website, that Tandem won't work.

Agreed. But it can be very useful to know, even approximately, where you are in a list of messages. For example, I keep a folder of messages that require attention but not immediate attention. It gets quite long. The times I go through it, acting on some and deleting others, I like to know how much further I have to go. We all have different methods of working with email, but for this and other purposes, insert-5 is going to prove very useful to me.

I haven’t used insert-5 for this purpose, but I just did and discovered it has a huge advantage over the insert-3 status line command. It not only lists the number of messages in a folder, but also the position of a particular message in that list. It’s a feature I’ve always missed since moving from Outlook Express to Outlook.

Hi Madison,

Assuming you are using laptop layout, hit the caps lock key with your left hand and 3 on the num pad or the up arrow with your right hand to read the line. You will hear the number of messages at the end.

Do any of you know of an Ebook reader that is accessible and that

Subject: Accessible Ebook Readers

Hey Everyone,

Recently I downloaded a book sample from Amazon but kept getting an
error of "Secure Storage" which does not allow the sample to become
readable.

Do any of you know of an Ebook reader that is accessible and that
supports the Kindle format? I am using Windows 11 and JAWS 2022.

Thanks in advance.
