Re: Scanners for convenient OCR and Open Book
Hi Gene, I don't know if one made for documents would give you better results, as it is more a factor of the resolution, which you can change in the scanner's software. I've had good luck with my color scanners, one is a cannon scanner and the other is a all-in one printer scanner. The all in one I have now wirelessly connects to my router and is in the network, but is a pain if I have a lot to scan, going back and forth from one room to another. The one I had before wasn't meant for a network, but I connected it to my router and found it in the network and made it work. I'm not even sure if they make any any more that don't do color. Glenn

Hi everyone!
I currently have a color photo scanner, I believe that I could get better OCR results if I switched to a scanner designed primarily for scanning documents. Can anyone recommend one? I wouldn't mind a document feeder, but it doesn't need to be one that can hold a ton of pages, if it can hold and feed 10 pages, that would be plenty for my needs.
Thanks! Gene...

Hi Feliciano!
Thanks for the recommendation! I should have also said that I am looking for just a scanner, not one of these all-in-one devices because I have a printer that I am happy with.

There are plenty of apps and websites that don't play friendly with Narrator. Just because Narrator works well in this situation, that doesn't mean that Narrator is best at working with a multitude of programs and websites. With JAWS, do the following: In the website, focus your arrow key at the sign on button. It doesn’t matter if it says expanded or collapse. Press JAWS key +Z to turn off virtual cursor, and use the tab or shift tab to get back the focus at the sign on button. If the button is collapse, press space to expand it. Then press tab and you should be able to go through those menu, like sign on, forget password, and enrol. It seems that my bank changed something on the home page to get to the sign-in section. I cannot find the login section at all with JAWS PC or JAWS cursor. I asked an AIRA agent for a visual description of what was happening. With that, I found that Narrator can find the section, but not JAWS. I’ll describe the layout from the AIRA agent’s perspective, then I’d appreciate knowing two things from some of you: I primarily use MS Edge, but did also try this on Chrome, with the same result. Using JAWS, go to www.key.com. Press B until you hear Sign-on button. If you click this, it says that the button is now expanded. JAWS cannot find anything, reading instead a photo description of a woman and a mural. I even tried redrawing the screen and routing my JAWS cursor to the PC cursor. What AIRA and Narrator show is that a little section appears below this expanded sign-on button where it mentions Online Banking, has buttons to Enroll and Sign-On and links for forgot your password. Narrator reads these and I can click the sign-on button to open the actual log-in area. - Are you able to find the expanded section with JAWS?
- We talk about always having two screen readers for cases like this, but do you think it’s reasonable that I’m still pushing back to the bank tech team to say this doesn’t work with JAWS? I sent in feedback over the weekend, before I had even tested it with Narrator, so I cannot say that the site is completely inaccessible, but I’m disappointed that JAWS isn’t reading that section once expanded.

Hi. This is such an interesting topic. I rather enjoy discussions like this. I prefer Jaws over NVDA because Jaws has the Braille math editor, which I need to use for math class. NVDA is a great screen reader if you don't need to do math. Also, I love Jaws picture smart, voice assistant feature, and the convenient OCR. I do use NVDA occasionally, and I like how there are so many unique NVDA add-ons. However, my overall preference is Jaws.

Hi Lanie, I don't use scripts, so I can't help you there. I do use a braille display. It is the Focus 40 5th generation. Since I've been a long time user of Jaws, early to mid 90's, I chose this display over others because I wanted the two to work well together. Since Then I understand there are several from other companies that work well with Jaws too.
There is another group. The group I found has a braille display focus only. Getting them to work with screen readers; including NVDA, Narrator, IOS, Jaws, etc.; is often discussed on that list. Also deciding which one might work best with your preferred screen reader. Here is the link to learn more.

Hi all. I've been playing with JAWS 2022 for a little while now. I'm a long-time user of NVDA and like it, but I'm interested in some of the features JAWS provides that NVDA doesn't, and I'd like to start using Braille more since I love Braille and am autistic and sometimes have periods of sensory overload with all my screen readers going off around me and other noises in my environment. I know JAWS provides better Braille support, and I'm hoping to get a Braille display soon. I have a few questions though. Are there any resources for finding scripts? I'm used to looking for add-ons in one location, like the NVDA add-ons website. Also, is there a way to make JAWS speak passwords? With NVDA, I have an add-on that does this. Does anyone know of any training resources for people who already know how to use a computer, advanced computer users, or people who have used other screen readers? I looked at the basic training materials, but they seemed a little basic for my needs. Finally, is there anyone who has made this switch and might be able to give me some tips on switching? Thanks.

To turn off automatic updates in new versions of Windows like Windows 10, which doesn't seem to have that parameter in the Control Panel like other previous versions (That really makes me mad), you actually have to create a registry key. If it's not already there, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. create a new key called "WindowsUpdate". within that key, create another key called AU. Within that key, create a Dword value called NoAutoUpdate. Set that value to 1. If you have Winaero Tweaker, which also helps, set the parameter of Disable Windows Update to checked, and you should be good to go. It does sound complicated, but it's definitely worth it if you don't wanna be bothered with constant updates!

Yes, turning off automatic updates is a good thing. I don't know if windows 10 or that newer one, LOL, allow one to select which updates can be installed through windows update, like we can in earlier windows. Hi Annabelle!
You woun't hear that from me! I've been the computer industry since 1980 and I have always felt that automatic updates are a very bad idea. The problem with automatic updates is that you may get an update that does bad thing to your computer, and while you might be able remove the update, the automatic update feature will just put it back again. It is always better to wait a while to see what others are saying about an update and if the news isn't good, you just don't install it!

Like you, I like the idea of owning my copy, even if it becomes outdated if I don't renew the SMA. The annual license is great for removing the barrier of entry for new JAWS users, but feels like a fleeting thing that you lose if you cannot afford the annual license one year.
If your last SMA was 2002, you may not be able to switch base to even a professional SMA at this point. You are probably best to call FS Sales and ask about your situation.

I purchased my SMA with a college trust fund back in 2002, as I was going to school back then. The SMA was a "Professional" license. I want to try to change my recent home annual license to a perpetual license, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to upgrade from one license to another. Am I right when I hear that a perpetual license never expires?

Hi Rosie, When the pdf comes up blank in Adobe, go to accessibility and change the reading order to left to right, top to bottom. That usually works for me and gives me the text, unless it is a graphic.

I've noticed the same thing; my guess, off the top of my head, is that something has chhanged with the 2-chromium based browsers.
The question is what; and the work around or fix.
Will be interested in the feedback of others on this.

If it is happening is all screen readers, and only happening in Chromium based browsers, I would say that the place to go is Google and/or the Chromium open source project community.

Re: jaws loosing focus in Chrome and Edge
Someone who can access the web without a screen reader will have to tell the list if they're having the same issue. If they are, there is probably little help that Freedom Scientific can provide. The problem then first needs to be fixed with the browsers. A screen reader can only be as good as the other software on the machine.

Hey there Meow Meow! Your name makes me smile!
