I recently had a similar issue, and I solved it by pressing alt+shift to set the keyboard language to US English. I don't know if there's another way.

Hello,

My name is Lenore Presley. I am DeafBlind and use JAWS with Braille.

I have some problems with how JAWS reads numbers and spaces in between them in Outlook and Microsoft Word. When I read numbers with spaces inbetwwen, dots appear in places where the spaces are supposed to be. I would like to know how I can remedy this issue. Yes, even when I write inWord and try to type numbers and spaces in between numbers, dots still appear in place of spaces.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance!

Sincerely,

Lenore Presley ;o)

Subject: Virtual find

Hello,

I’m using the most recent versions of Windows10, Jaws2022 and a few days ago I uninstalled Google Chrome and reinstalled.

Since the last update to Jaws2022 I have encountered a problem when using Google Chrome. When I open Chrome the cursor is on the address/search bar. When I read the line before typing in anything wit will “address and search bar a”. Why is the letter showing up? I have pressed delete and back space and it doesn’t go away. When I type in something to search or a url, it has no affect. Jaws must be picking up on some letter.

Then when I’m on a web page I will press control F to do the virtual find. There are times the letter F shows in the search box. I pressed delete and back space and the letter doesn’t go away. Then there are times I will type in some text and it will say 2 of 78. For what I’m searching on there is only 2 occurrences. The only way I can see what the cursor is on I have to press escape. There are times the virtual find works okay. I talked with FS and was told in order to see what the cursor hit on is to tab and it will tell me. Well I tabbed numerous times and it doesn’t tell me what the cursor is on. I also mentioned the character that shows up and was told I need to make sure I have the most recent version for Chrome, windows10 and all drivers. Well as I said before I got the most recent download a few days ago. Windows was updated last week. This problem has been going since the most recent to Jaws2022. Has anyone experienced this issue? What did you do to correct it?

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi,

First thing you need to check is if your license is renewed. Every year you have to renew these home annual licenses so you'll need to go to portal.freedomscientific.com and log in with your cridentuals and see if your license is still good or if you need to renew it. Second, if the jaws installation is failing, then the best thing to do with that would be to contact Tech support as they might be able to help you do some other trouble shooting steps. Hope this helps, and if anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to chime in.

Thanks.

Hi all. I purchased a annual subscription to Jaws and attempted to install 2022. 2018 was my working version and for some reason even though I had 2019 2020 and 2021 on my computer none of them worked correctly as I don't know if they got corrupted or whatever the issue is. When I go to install 2022 I get the error message that says The Jaws install has failed close button. I tried downloading the file from the freedom scientific web site and still no go. I have nvda on my machine so that's what I'm using until I can fix this issue. If anyone has any ideas let me know because I'd like to get it installed and my license activated as soon as I possibly can. Thanks.

As far as I know and I double checked with the version I have installed, you have the latest.

Note: the layout of the program has changed a bit and it has been that way for over a year.

Also, Note: Microsoft will be doing away with Skype and moving everything to MS Teams if you are using MS 365. I believe it should update once you switch to Windows 11.

When I had this problem I did the following:

1. uninstall JAWS.
2. Run (windows r) appdata.
3. Searched the three resulting directories for Freedom Scientific folders.
4. Deleted all references to JAWS in the folders.
5. Reinstalled JAWS.

It's pretty extreme; but if JAWS isn't working anyway, it won't make it stop working.

Good luck!

Hi,

When you are updating your Skype, the version you have installed, what version are you running?

If you cannot find the update in the version you have on your system go to https://ninite.com and download the latest version from there.

I have been using W10 and Skype for a long time, but it does not update by itself. Meaning I have to download any update manually. Are there any directions available for finding if auto update is on or off?

If so, please may I have them written in a form for dummies like the following....

1. go into windows settings using win/I key...

2. then....

3. then..

4. then

I have found , using Chrome, a couple things on web, but they are written for people whom can navigate a screen visually.

So any directions, the more simple the better.

I have used the search button"automatic update" with no luck.

Again, take it easy on me....lol.

Thanks

Hi,

I think your situation needs to be dealt with directly with Freedom Scientific.

If they don't give you the help to correct the problem then come back to the list.

Hi Ken,

When programs do things like that I try to go into them and figure out how to turn off promotions and other announcements. If something does pop up, escape usually works.

How do you get to the ‘x’ in the top right corner of the window to close it?

Thanks.

Hi, if you are using Jaws, push Jaws key plus f8. This will bring up a list of any active frame on screen, so that you can focus the cursor on it and close it.

Best,

Try just hitting ESCape when they appear.  That often works while they have focus.

Hi.

If you go into settings center, and search cursor blink, then you should be able to adjust the cursor blink rate from there. Just make sure you’re in the default settings, not application specific settings. When you open settings center you should already be in the default all application settings, but just in case, before you type in the search box, press shift+tab and listen to see if all applications is selected then press tab to get back in to that search field. Hope this helps.

They seem to be distracted by the fast cursor blinkrate which Jaws forces.

I can do it temporarily, but once the screen changes, the fast rate is back.

Mike,

This doesn’t work for me. As soon as I change the blinkrate and press enter on it, and go back to check it again, it has already defaulted back to 100.

I think Jaws is forever forcing it back to 100?

Thanks,

Hi Peter,

Yes you can, but it might effect the way Jaws reads.  You didn't say which operating system, so where to find the blink rate settings for Windows 7 & 10 are below.

Go to the, Control Panel / Keyboard link, and press enter.

Or, type, blink rate, into the search field and press enter on, Change cursor blink rate.

The cursor blink rate settings are on the Speed tab.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

One thing I do when selecting text, is always keep my finger on the shift and left arrow to unselect spaces and return codes that might be following what I have selected.
This problem also plagues the sighted too, because spaces look like nothing but empty space and they don't notice it getting picked up with the text.

Hello Mona:

The goal, as I read your email, is to generate “all good bears Tyrell”.

For reference, the two lines you have are as follows.

Now is the time for all good bears to sleep.  Also now is the time for Tyrell to sleep.

The second half, where you want to append Tyrell to the Clipboard, is the problem. Highlight Tyrell and then press the JAWS key along with the windows key and the letter c. This is the “append” to clipboard function.

When I did this, I notice that for whatever reason, a return character is appended to the first segment.

Cordially,

Curtis Chong

I am using jaws 2021, windows ten and have questions.

The sentences that I am playing with are:

Now is the time for all good bears to sleep.  Also now is the time for Tyrell to sleep.

I find the words “all good bears” at the beginning of the word all I type control windows and the letter K.  After the word Bears, I type the insert key, spacebar, and the letter m.  I type a control and the letter C.  It copies it.

Then I go to the second sentence and find the word Tyrell.  At the beginning of the word Tyrell, again I type control windows and the letter K  and at the end of the word Tyrell I type insert spacebar and the letter m.  I then type a control c but it copies the end of that sentence not just the word Tyrell.  I’m like to append Tyrell to the already copied words all good bears.  What am I doing wrong?  I think this is neat and thank you gentlemen for bringing this feature up.

Help
