Hi. I am trying to read a speech in a foreign language and there are subtitles, but how to get Jaws to read them -- I see one line of text which changes, but Jaws does not read it as the speech is going.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That's a good question. There are times when JAWS seems to randomly just start reading the subtitles as they go, but ti's definitely not consistent -- also definitely not something you want all of the time.

You may need to do a Windows recovery using your Windows 10 CD. You may

the following link:
Once the page is loaded, press JAWS/INSERT KE+F7,
to open the JAWS list links function. tap the DOWN ARROW, a few times, and the
32 and 64 bit free versions of the software are there.
I do not know what the full limitations of the free
version is but, I do know that the option to rebuild the MBR information
for a drive, is not restricted because, I needed to use the function
to rebuild the MBR for my system drive a couple of years ago.

Hi,
Annabelle. I don't know why your machine is going into an endless cycle of
restarts, but this sounds more serious than a JAWS repair or reinstall. You
may need to do a Windows recovery using your Windows 10 CD. You may also
need to take your machine into a store to see what is going on, since it is
impossible to access your BIOS without sighted
assistance.

did that, but still nothing changed. What's even weirder is I have to have

Put

1. Press
INSERT plus SPACE to enter layered

2.
Press the letter Z. JAWS will say,
Default

It
will also unload any modifications you have made to the default settings
in JAWS. Because of this, JAWS may begin speaking slower or with a
different voice.
Now
that JAWS is in Default alternate user directory mode,
open one of the programs that was giving you trouble with the classic
"Taskbar And Start Menu" Settings, and see if the trouble continues in
this mode. If it does not keep happening, the problem was caused by
something that was changed in the JAWS settings. If the problem
continues in this mode, it is a problem occuring with JAWS, even in its
default state.
Now,
to exit Default alternate user directory

1. Press
INSERT plus SPACE to enter layered

2.
Press the letter Z. JAWS will say,
Default

If
the problem was absent when Default alternate user

Yes, this poses occasional issues, I won't deny, but in the case of web browsers you (the generic you) should have basic skills with at least two, preferably three, as there have been occasions for as long as I've been working in the screen reader world where a given screen reader and a given browser (or website in a given browser) just do not play well together.
There are times when you're going to have to punt to your second choice. It's a fact of cyberlife in the 21st century.
That's why having basic skill with an alternate screen reader is essential, too, as sometimes it's necessary to use an alternative in a pinch. --

Re: Question on how too update our google chrome browsers.
Hi. Chrome will automatically update itself, but if you’d like to check if chrome is up-to-date, here’s how you do it. - Press alt+f to get to the file menu, then arrow down to help submenu.
- Press enter on this submenu then press enter on about.
Chrome will check for upadtes. Unfortunately you’ll have to use the virtual pc cursor to see if chrome is up to date or not so make sure when you get to the about window, make sure the virtual cursor is on and if it’s not, press insert+z to turn it on.

Hello all, When working with JAWS2022 trying to write in Spanish I notice that when writing a dot 6 to capitalize JAWS will announce the dot 6 using the English Vocalizer expressive voice. Also, when I write a letter such as an a or o JAWS will also announce this in English. When reading the Spanish using arrow keys, JAWS will then pronounce all items using the Voicalizer Spanish voice. How do I have JAWS solely pronounce everything in the Spanish Vocalizer voice? The odd item here is that the keyboard voice for JAWS is set to the Spanish voice when using Vocalizer. I have a student who I am trying to have write in Spanish for class so I'd like to resolve this in a quick manner. Thank you in advance for any responses

Hi,
In his message, Gene clearly stated that you need to know what you're doing if you want the Chrome updates to stop and you need to be aware of it or note it down for future reference.
If anyone wants to use that workaround to keep a version of Chrome that works with JAWS until a later update fixes the underlying issue, then that's their choice and responsibility.
Anyone who is not tech-savvy enough won't even dream of touching the registry or disabling services, unless they are given precise directions and assured that that won't harm their system otherwise.
Also, not everyone wants to deal with 2 or 3 screen readers on their system, even though I agree they provide for a great toolbox if anything does not work correctly with the defaults you're used to.
Understand that there are a lot of people, even to this day, who believe that a PC is a necessity rather than a great resource, sohave the fear of breaking things or learning new screen reader commands.
They may be merely interchangeable concepts to you, but some people just memorise sequences rather than concepts, and understanding that is important.
The fact that Gene and you are taking this to a personal level, and gene sees criticism and attacks whenever he reads a post from you, is a different story and is something you both need to figure out or live with, ignore, whatever.
That pattern can be exhausting and begs for the delete key.

Re: Automatically Switching Voice Profiles Based On Application/Website
#jaws
I do not believe this is possible, as far as I can tell the profile in use is based on the currently focused program.
It is possible to have scripts and even normal jaws configuration on a per-site basis but as far as I can tell the voice profile is not part of that.

Now that JAWS is in Default alternate user directory mode, open one of the programs that was giving you trouble with the classic "Taskbar And Start Menu" Settings, and see if the trouble continues in this mode. If it does not keep happening, the problem was caused by something that was changed in the JAWS settings. If the problem continues in this mode, it is a problem occuring with JAWS, even in its default state.
Now, to exit Default alternate user directory mode,
1. Press INSERT plus SPACE to enter layered commands.
2. Press the letter Z. JAWS will say,
Default alternate user directory mode off.
If the problem was absent when Default alternate user directory mode was active, I would suggest a clean reinstall of JAWS, if the repair does not work.

I'm having trouble accessing the classic "Taskbar And Start Menu" settings in Windows 10. Every time I press enter on "Taskbar and Start Menu", I'm taken to the new version made in "Settings". Unfortunately that version is not easy to access with screenreaders like JAWS. I wish there was a way that I could access classic parameters made for earlier versions of Windows, as they are more suitable for the sight challenged. Specifically I'm trying to turn off the parameter to "Click on submenus when I pause on them", as it drives me mad! If someone could please make a registry key for me, I would kindly appreciate it! Thank you!

As I told Annabelle, she'll probably need to do a Windows recovery using her Windows CD to fix the MBR.

Hi Bill,
Annabelle had the rebooting problem before the Jaws
problem.
I think her computer's MBR is messed up from an
improper shutdown from a power loss.
