moderated what's the keystroke for jaws 2022 to read continuously?

Mich Verrier

Hi all. I am running jaws 2022 and I thought that the keystroke to have jaws read continuously was incert 2 on the numb pad. Has this changed? Since I am trying to read something on line and like to sit back and let jaws read but it seems to be reading a little and then stopping and then I have to keep hitting the keystroke. Right now my f 1 through f 12 funktion keys are turned on so that they show f 3 brightness wheel 100 alt f 4 windows project etc. I am going to get this fixt soon. I would like to know though please what the keystroke is to have jaws read continuously. Many thanks. From Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada.

Yes. I agree with that. That’s why I signed up for one not to long ago.

I can answer that question. First off, with a Zoom account, it is much easier to set Zoom up so that, when joining a meeting, you connect to the meeting audio right away. Other settings are possible as well such as not having video on unless you turn it on, having participants and chat windows easily reached with the F6 function key, etc.

Unfortunately, this is on a work machine. We have a couple of programs that only work with Jaws 18, so upgrading for now is out of the question. It’s very strange, if I tab out of the field and go back it will read what I have typed in, but if I try to use the jaws commands to read word or line or go back or forward, it doesn’t read anything. Nor does anything show up on the braille display. Very strange as I don’t have this problem in explorer.

Not that I don't agree with you, but the original poster has clearly stated, "Unfortunately, this is on a work machine. We have a couple of programs that only work with Jaws 18, so upgrading for now is out of the question."

Sadly, these sorts of situations are all too common.  If individuals or businesses don't have a commitment to keeping up-to-date on everything, being not-up-to-date on one thing often forces other things to have to be kept, too.

There's nothing personal about the original poster in this observation, but what on earth is this business using that will only work with JAWS 18 that won't work with the later versions?  I don't doubt what's been said, but that's a huge red flag right there.  So is the comment that Internet Explorer is still being used.  It will soon be entirely gone from Windows 10 and 11, and if they're not even running Windows 10 then it's not a red flag but a house afire!

I do use webmail, but that was not one of the contexts I had in mind, as virtually every webmail interface has had a auto-save drafts every X minutes feature for a very long time now.

I participate on this group (and all Groups.io groups) via its web forum interface, and even that has an auto-save drafts feature.

But there are lots of web pages for things like surveys, or applying for a job where there is a "tell me about yourself" sort of edit box, where no auto-save exists.  For situations like that is where I'm thinking that composing your treatise for that particular edit box then copying/cutting and pasting it in once complete and reviewed is the way to go.  It's impossible for me to give an exhaustive list of examples, but I presume that "when you hit one" (the generic you) after a while you recognize when an external compose is a good idea.  One certainly doesn't do that for, say, name and address edit boxes.

If you are using JAWS 18, you are not keeping up with the most current browsing technology. I strongly urge you to get JAWS 2022. Modern browsers such as Edge and Chrome will work significantly better if you use JAWS 2022. It’s only $95 per year.

Have a read through the topic in the NVDA group:  Issue with search engine fields and NVDA

Different screen reader, and most likely the same root cause, which does not lie with the screen reader, but with Chromium-based browsers, at least until the bug gets fixed.

Taken directly from JAWS help.

The builtin Zoom keystroke to notify current speaker conflicts with the JAWS notifications keystrokes. Instead, press control+shift+T to have Zoom notify

who's talking.

General keystrokes:

Mute or unmute audio: Alt+A

Raise or lower your hand: Alt+Y

Open the Invite window: Alt+I

Show the In-Meeting Chat panel: Alt+H

Show the Participants panel: Alt+U

Move between Zoom popup windows: F6

Recording Keystrokes:

Start local recording: Alt+R

Start cloud recording: Alt+C

Pause or resume recording: Alt+P

Video Meeting Keystrokes:

Switch to active speaker view:  Alt+F1

Switch to gallery video view: Alt+F2

Start or stop Video: Alt+V

Meeting Organizer Keystrokes:

Mute or unmute audio for everyone except the host: Alt+M

Switch camera: Alt+N

Enter or exit full screen: Alt+F

Gain remote control: Alt+Shift+R

Stop remote control: Alt+Shift+G

The following keystrokes are available when the meeting control toolbar has focus.

Launch share screen window and stop screen share: Alt+S

Start or stop new screen share: Alt+Shift+S

Pause or resume screen share: Alt+T

All that came from pressing Insert W in JAWS, when Zoom had focus.

And let me tell you, blind or sighted, this is an excellent idea for a lot of reasons.

I have learned, the hard way, that you can easily lose everything you've been typing, particularly in webpages, if certain confluences of events occur.  While I wouldn't call these common, they're common enough to give consideration to "in the back of your head" when you find you need to put lengthy text content into an edit box somewhere.

I've even lost messages for groups such as this one that I've been carefully composing over a long period of time when things like my own stupidity in accidentally closing my browser have occurred or other things like a sudden power outage and others.

Composing this sort of stuff in MS-Word or Notepad, then cutting and pasting it in afterward, has saved me a lot of heartache on occasion.  I tend to prefer MS-Word only because of it's auto-backup feature, as that's saved my work (and bacon) on several occasions when the untoward (like a power outage) has occurred.

Often, it really depends on what risks you're willing to shoulder and what pain you're willing to endure if "the unfortunate" occurs.

But when it comes to lengthy text input, I favor doing the composition and editing in a dedicated program and then cutting/copying and pasting it into a web form field afterward.

I’m still running JAWS 2021 on my work laptop and I see this occasionally on some sites, but I’d have to pay more attention to the issue.   There does seem to be some issues with web design on some edit boxes.  A couple things that work for me are to use  insert up arrow to validate what is in the edit box or, if that doesnn’t work or if I’m trying to get to a particular place to edit what is there, I find that using Shift Control arrows to highlight the text will read each word as it is highlighted.  So, if I make a typo in a comment box and want to go edit a word, I’ll go to the beginning, then do the shift Control right arrow to read the text, then when I hear the place I need to change, I’ll stop pressing the control and shift and just hit right or left arrow.  It can still be a guessing game, and if it’s a really long sentence I’m editing, I might just copy and paste into notepad to edit.

issues with a chrome browser and edit fields.
And, to Brian's point: ditto to his comments.
2022 worked far more smoothly than the older versions of JFW I have on the

Unfortunately, this is on a work machine. We have a couple of programs that only work with Jaws 18, so upgrading for now is out of the question. It’s very strange, if I tab out of the field and go back it will read what I have typed in, but if I try to use the jaws commands to read word or line or go back or forward, it doesn’t read anything. Nor does anything show up on the braille display. Very strange as I don’t have this problem in explorer.

moderated Re: Reading Snipping Tool Output In Outlook Emails With JAWS

I havent’ been able to get it to work, nor have I figured out how to read the snips people send me. If I really need to send something, I will do a print screen, but that has the downside of grabbing more information than you may want to share.   If I receive a snip or screen capture of some sort, I will either call the person back to tell me what is in the image, I’ll call an AIRA agent, or I’ll save the email as a PDF and have JAWS OCR the full document.  As much as it comes up on this list every so often, I just cannot find workable ways to read the number of images pasted into emails nowadays.

Ok, so whilst the snip appeared to be pasted into the chat, it actually didn't when it was saved.

So you'll have to try it out yourself using the snnipping tool and Outlook. To create a snip from anywhere, press Shift+Windows+S, a cross will appear on your screen and you can drag this to form a rectangle and then when done, let go, the snip will be copied to your clibclipboard and can then be pasted into a document or email message.

Then, try and see if you can read it with JAWS.
