Oh, I apologize for leaving that out, I thought the pasting into the document part was the main thing.

Set the placemarkers as described.

Use control windows k to create a temporary placemarker.

Do this at the start of where  you want to select, then navigate down to where the end of your selection is going to be, so to the end of where you want to select.

Use insert spacebar, then the letter m.

You should here selecting between marked place and current position.

Then copy, and paste into your document.

Thanks,

HJustin

Hi guys:

If I am on a webpage and I wish to select a column of text from within a table,

And then paste it into word or notepad but not as a column in a table,

How do I do this?

Using jaws 2022?

I think the browser is chrome if that helps?

The reason for me doing this is that,

After I paste the column into word or notepad,

I then have constructed an outline of topics and subtopics already set.

Because the topics and subtopics are all located within a particular column.

Please advise as you like.

Mike,
Are there table commands for selecting a column in a browser?
In word and other word processors, you can select rows and columns with shift + space or control + space.
In Edge, Jaws can give program specific help with commonly used shortcuts with insert W, but this only seems to be a feature for Jaws with Microsoft products, but what works in Edge will probably work in other browsers.

You are absolutely right,

I am familiar with place markers; ( I did as you suggested);

It did in fact copy all the rows of the column I selected.

I did have to go into notepad and paste, then,

Edit out the stuff I did not want.

It took quite a bit of time,

One would think that I could copy simply a column without the rest of the columns in the rows?

Since we don’t have the document, I can’t be sure that only that column will be selected. You may need to copy the entire document into a new file and play with it. But the placemarkers will ultimately give you what you need.

I need to correct myself here. Apparently in the last JAWS update, Freedom Scientific decided to remove the option to disable Sharky. So if you want to disable it, you'll have to create an AdditionalSettings.ini file and put it in the same folder where you run the JAWS installer from.

To get information about how to do this run the installer with the /help command line option.

Hi Karen!

You should be able to go to the about JAWS dialog and it will tell you how many upgrades you have left.

1. insert+J to open the JAWS context menu 2. press up arrow two time to get to the about option 3. press enter 4. press insert+alt+W to virtualize the dialog, this makes it easy to browse what it says.
or you could switch to the JAWS cursor by pressing the numeric keypad - key.

Yes, start a new email fill out all of the form that will be constant. Then hit your F 12 K set a name for it, tab down to file type and down arrow once then up arrow twice. It tends to work better that way I don’t know why. He will be on in outlook message template save it wherever you’d like and when you go back in all you have to do is fill in the information that is specific to that next email.

So if you had an invoice, you could leave the to field blank put your email in the C C field fill out the subject line as much as possible and the message body as much as possible that way when you go back all you have to do is put who it’s two and then the pertinent information for each one of your invoices most of the work is done it’s just customizing it that you’ll need to do each time you go in.

Michael, the easiest way that I have found to do that is to make an email template with all of the people in the two or the C C field. Fill out all of the rest of it and then when you put the student notes in there all you have to do is bring up that one template fill in the date and the information about the class and send it and it will send it to everybody. If you need any help just let me know and I will give you my contact information.

Hello. So I got a new computer with Windows 11, so I have been trying to figure out the layout of the new laptop and all of that. And I’ve noticed that when I’m on a webpage and I want to hit insert plus F7 to go to a links list, it doesn’t work, same with insert plus F4 to unload JAWS (Not that I would ever actually want to do that, but I was just trying to mess around with it). It’s like my function keys aren’t working in the way that I need them to. Like for example, I believe it is my F5 key that functions as a mute button right now, but I don’t want that, I want them to just function as regular F one through F 12 keys. I posted on a Facebook group, and I was told to do the function key plus escape, and I’ve tried that and it still is the same way. Is JAWS supposed to say anything when I perform that action of function key plus escape? Usually I’m pretty tech savvy, but this not being able to do insert plus F7 for the links list is kind of baffling right now. I know I can use the Hey Sharky feature and have it pull up links that way, but still, I’d like to have the normal key command work. Thanks.

When JAWS is not set to run in the System Tray, there is always an open window, when you cycle through the open programs, when you use ALT+TAB.

When JAWS is set to run in the System Tray, the JAWS window is hidden.

Hi Mike,

I don’t run it from the system tray. What are the advantages of doing this?

Hi Karen,

If you don't run Jaws from the system tray this is normal, but if you do run Jaws from the system tray it is not.

If you have Jaws set to run from the system tray try unloading Jaws and reloading, now see if you can access the menues by arrowing after pressing, Insert + J.

I must have something set up differently. I can press insert plus j and it brings up the jaws window and reads the current version, like it would as a heading. It won’t let me get to the menus this way unless I press alt h. Is there a setting I need to change in Jaws?

Hi Karen,

Press, Insert + J, up arrow to, Help submenu, press enter, up arrow to, About, press enter and this is where you'll find the info you're looking for.

Yes, for some reason all it tells me is the version and my number.

Hi Jean,
When I press insert j it only gives me the version number. I'm not able to up arrow at all.

And, if the browser is set as your default browser, enter that link in the

In newer versions of Edge, control+H takes you to a history dialog, I
always hit 'B' to go to the first button in the dialog then hit enter,
then you are taken to the history page in a tab that will close with
control+W.

There used to be a setting that disabled that dialog so you went straight
to the history page, but apparently Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom,
disabled it.

They put that same stupid dialog in front of the favorites manager. I hate
both of them and wish there was a way to get rid of them.

Control+P takes you to a preview of what you are going to print, if you
want to bypass that and just go to the system print dialog, hit
control+shift+P instead.

Control w doesn't work and neither does alt f4. Or not for me. I try
to control tab into the webpage I opened, but I'm still stuck in
history. How do I close it so I can take another look at the webpage I
opened using history?

I can go in and arrow up and down through the history, and press enter
on the page I want to reopen, but I just can't get to it and can't get
out of history.

On most laptops the FN key is usually in the bottom row on the left side between the control and Windows keys, thought it can be between the Windows and alt keys. It really depends on the brand and model of your laptop because it seems that everyone has their own ideas where some keys should go, even between models of the same brand.

This is a very, very common convention indeed, and has been for some time now.  If you're not a screen reader user there's almost never a time where the use of the function key row as "actual function keys" just doesn't arise.  On the rare occasions it does, holding down the Fn key and hitting the needed function key on that row makes it act as a standard function key rather than a media key.

There are a few makers, Lenovo being one of them, that allows the media key function to be toggled on/off within Windows using a utility they supply.  Most, however, require the media keys/action keys/whatever the given manufacturer calls them to be toggled off in UEFI/BIOS, which requires sighted assistance since there is no screen reader support before the operating system loads.
