I get the feeling those guys at Vispero tech support are only up to working with anything that's very directly connected with JAWS. Anythign to do with Windows itself, or any other application, and it seems theyf all short. Of course this makes a certain amount of sense, but it *is* an integrated experience, so the people doing this should be able to extend themselves a little further in order to assist JAWS users.

Perhaps if they would go a little further, someone could tandem in to your system and see how the problem actaully manifests, rather than trying to reproduce it on their machines. -----Original Message-----

I just tried placing two phone numbers in the address bar without punctuation marks and both showed up without issue after typing the number and pressing enter. What I did was to enter the phone number in and press enter then go to the top of the page and press h until I got to the search results heading I then used down arrow and the number was displayed as the first result. This is using the Google search engine. On 8/20/22, Albert Cutolo <Albertc51@...> wrote:

Re: Jaws virtual cursor question.
JM Casey
Hello.
You want it on for the most part, while browsing the web/looking at pages. When you are entering data into the keyboard, as opposed to navigating around a layout that you just want to read, then you want it off. JAWS usually recognises what kind of interface you are being presented with and the virtual cursor will be on or off as appropriate. There are certain times when you might want to turn it off manually, but for the most part, just leave it.

I use an old JAWS version myself and it still works fine, but I know the only thing I'd get from tech support from them is an insistence that I upgrade. Obviously that doesn't solve all problems. In any case, I can get away with this configuration because I do use nVDA as well, and sometimes even narrator. It seems strange that such a simple seeming dialogue wouldn't work fine with any screen-reader, but here's a thought -- just run nVDA the next time you encounter the smart screen filter, and see if you can let the file through. Honestly though I wouldn't waste my time with this windows feature. You've already got Windows Defender and if you're worrieda bouta f ile, you can run it through virus total or something. Having microsoft block thigns based on their 'reputation", the number of times download, or whatever, just seems like the kind of attempt to manage the user base that is making me want to switch to Linux before 2025. Luckily though we can still turn these things off. For now. -----Original Message-----

Hello Well, never really occurred to me to just type a phone number into the address bar before, but yeah, it works, provide there Is a listing for the number. It’s just a google search, and I imagine this is dependent on whether you have google set as the search engine in the address bar. To verify whether it is, go to settings, search, and look for the combo box that says ‘search engine to use in the address bar”.

I just turned it off. Just seemed like another attempt by microsoft to micro-manage (hah) your computing experience. Perhaps it's more fair to say, an assumption that most users don't know what they are doing and will break thigns if not overly protected. And hey, I suppose that might at times be true. Still, see what you can do with this. You can control it to an extent using the settings in windows security, but not to a great extent. Maybe this'll help https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/microsoft-defender-smartscreen/microsoft-defender-smartscreen-set-individual-device Do't know about jaws and the warning screen that pops up though. It seems like it's pretty straightforward and it should work, but I don't remember dealing with it as I think I just turned the whole thing off as soon as the first warning came up. -----Original Message-----

Re: logon/logoff sounds on windows 11.
Gerald Levy
There is no default log off sound for Windows 10 or 11 as there was in Windows 7 and earlier. Don't even try to hack the registry or follow some convoluted series of instructions to create a log off sound unless you are an advanced techie and have sighted help on hand in case you screw things up. The most reliable way to tell for sure that your PC has powered off is to connect a small, inexpensive USB powered cooling fan. When the fan stops spinning, then your PC has powered off. This will work with almost any PC, and the little fan will create a gentle and refreshing breeze.

Apparently, there is a way to set up the log-off, but the reliability is inconsistent, even if you set it up; also, the setup is not easy. If you're bolder and more motivated than I am, though, here's a link to some chatter about it--though, I wasn't able to convert to a hyperlink, so you'll have to copy/paste it into your browser:

Add Log On, Log Off and Shut down sounds to Windows 11 Also, from what I've heard on other lists for blind folks, the sound doesn't indicate that the computer is actually shutting down--you could still end up only partly shut down, for instance, if, for some reason, Windows wouldn't let you close out due to another program not shutting down first; and if, for some reason, JAWS isn't cooperating and you don't hear about that, the only clue you'd get is that the back fan is still whirring. . I have heard of some people using a small USB fan as a sound cue to when a computer actually is completely shut down, which, to me, would be a much more reliable indicator. Finally--and this only works in a quiet room and/or if you don't have a hearing issue--you will hear the fan in the back of the computer stop whirring, when the computer is shut down totally. HTH! Sandra An identity would seem to be arrived at by the way in which the person faces and uses his experience. (James Baldwin) -----Original Message-----

To Check if this is on,
1. Go to Settings Center in JAWS with JAWS key plus six on the numbers row. 2. Load the default configuration with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D. 3. In the Settings Search Box, type Braille Viewer. 4. In the search results, look for Braille Viewer, and make sure this is unchecked.
