Yeah, it's just not normal behavior and I want to figure it out if at all possible because abnormal behavior means that something isn't quite right.

In my experience, INSERT+J does not work reliably unless or until JAWS is recycled.

So, I'm just curious -- if the method of accessign jaws works as expected, why restart jaws just to get it to appear int eh tray? Funny, this thread inspired me to actually look and -- I can't find JAWS in my system tray either. Now that I think about it, I don't remember the last time when I noticed it there. I guess it's been like that for yearsa nd I never even noticed anything strange. Is this just one of those computer niggles that you simply must figure out the reasoning behind a nd solve? I've certainly been there. -----Original Message-----

Re: USB flash drive recommendations
Gene Warner
Unfortunately the only recommendation I can give you is for a product that is no longer being sold and they are not flash drives. I use a set of Seagate Free Agent Go USB external hard drives to store my backups. What they are selling now I believe are called Free Agent One Touch external drives, I believe that the main difference between these and the Free Agent Go drives is USB 3.0 versus 2.0.

Hello all, I forgot to mention I did plugged in to an External keyboard to see weather the problem is generic to all keyboards and I have no problem getting the shift keys to work on my Red dragon mechanical keyboard. Thanks all for the answers, and I really appreciate it. Best regards Michael H. Munn

Hey Dave.
Not sure you’ll get much in the way of specific thoughts here. I think most people just buy whatever’s convenient, plug in, and expect it to work. Nonetheless, this page seems a good place to start. Takea look at the suggestions here.

Insert space then F4 if running the most current update to JAWS. One work-around that I have tried goes like this. First, ensure JAWS is not set to start up at any time with the possible exception of the login screen. Second, copy the JAWS shortcut into your Startup folder. You get to this folder with the Run command: shell:startup. Press Windows 4, type shell:startup, then press Enter. Cordially, Curtis Chong -----Original Message-----

Unfortunately, you may have to do a JAWS recycle after startup every time. This, at least, is the issue I am facing on my Windows 10 system. Fortunately, it is now quite easy (albeit inconvenient) to do this every time. Cordially, Curtis Chong -----Original Message-----

Re: Shift key on My laptop is not working.
Key failure on laptop keyboards is one of the most common issues, and way more common on certain makes and models than others.
You have done all you can, and should, do to try to remedy this. I would suggest using an external USB keyboard for the moment, and as a diagnostic step to confirm that it is the shift key on your laptop keyboard, and not something else. If it is the laptop keyboard, then replacement is what's necessary. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. Re: Shift key on My laptop is not working.

Greetings Michael:
To ascertain whether the problem is hardware or software, try plugging in another keyboard into the laptop to see if, on the external keyboard, Shift is working or not. Most likely, you have a problem with the laptop keyboard hardware.
I myself have not experienced this problem in decades of using laptop computers.
Best wishes,
Curtis Chong

Hello all, this is Michael. Recently I experienced a problem on my Pc. The shift key is not working as expected. When I try to perform a command that involve the shift key, it completed ignored it. For example, when I try to perform the command to go to task bar by pressing Shift CTRL and Escape, it thought I performed CTRL with Escape, so it brought up Windows start menu instead. The shift key is the vital part of the Windows and Jaws keyboard commands, so without the Shift key, it can mean a whole different thing. I tried to resolve the issue, but nothing worked. I Cleaned the keyboard with compressed air, and I even resettled my laptop just to make sure the software is not causing the problem, and nothing worked. When I finished resetting the computer, the shift key still won’t work. Instead, just one shift key not working, both went out at the same time. Please let me know if you are also experiencing the same issue with your computer. Thanks Best regards Michael H. Munn |
