Thanks for the suggestion.  I realize going to Word 2010 would be a downgrade but I already bought and have that version from before I got word 2016 ...... It’s just not on this computer.  I will check into upgrading to Word 2019 but I’m not guaranteed I won’t have the same problem and cost is a big factor with going that route.

Hello, Curtis,

Thank you for these suggestions.  I tried them both without success.

Microsoft disability help escalated my case and called me today.  They informed me they have had numerous reports of this problem with other versions of word as well and they aare “working on it”.  They told me there are two ways for a “work around”.  One way is to put the document onto a flash drive and spell check it in a computer with an older version of Word.  The other way is to find a third party spell checker software program and download it to my computer.

Hopefully they will come up with a fix for this soon.  Again, thank you for responding with your suggestions.

As a work-around, have you tried using Alt F7 to find the next misspelled word? Once found, you can activate the context menu to see what your options are.

Another way to do this is to turn on the Quick Keys with JAWS Key plus z. Then, press m to find the next misspelled word. To find the next error, turn on the Quick Keys again and then press m.

By the way, that's for Safe Mode with Networking.  I never use Safe Mode without networking, so I didn't bother doing the registry tweaks for that state.

Moderated can't connect mantis q40 via bluetooth to jaws or NVDA

molly the blind tech lover

Greetings.
Subject line says it all. I can pair my Mantis via bluetooth to my pc,
but when trying to connect it to Jaws or NVDA the Mantis just says
"braille display". The Mantis connects to both screen readers only
when I am using the USB cable. I've turned bluetooth on and off again
on both devices, had the Mantis forget my pc, and vice versa. I still
can't connect to either screen reader via bluetooth. I've even
rebooted both the Mantis and PC. I even set Jaws to auto detect the
braille display via bluetooth. I have NVDA's braille setting set to
"automatic". Nothing works unless I connect the Mantis via USB. Does
anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? I need to have
Braille, in the event I lose sound on my pc completely again.
Running Win 11, 22h2, Jaws 2022, and I don't know what version of NVDA I have.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

William,

Thank you very much.  Now it's been around a year since Google imposed a new security requirement, and I've gone in to as many of my links and corrected them as I could remember, but apparently not this one.

Getting Sound in Safe Mode Under Windows 10

That link should work.  It's a ZIP file and you should save it to your Desktop (or copy it there from wherever it downloads) and unzip it there.  After the unzipping, the ZIP file can be deleted.   The instructions for using it after you've unzipped it are in the folder in a plain text file.

If there are any additional issues, please let me know.

Sound has never been available, by default, in Safe Mode going back to the beginning of Windows.  Registry Editor 5.00 is still current.

I wrote the following tutorial (and the downloadable registry editing scripts that take care of it all) several years ago for the then Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group (now Windows Access with Screen Readers Group as of the advent of Windows 11):  Getting Sound in Safe Mode Under Windows 10

Moderated Re: Strange PDF Conversion Issue Involving Jaws

As an aside, if anyone would like to give PDFCreator Free a try, they just put out a new version, which I was alerted to just this afternoon.  As noted, this software creates a virtual printer where you "print" any given file and it will be converted to a PDF.  If that file is something like an MS-Word document the text will be a part of the resulting PDF.

The direct download link is: https://download.pdfforge.org/download/pdfcreator/PDFCreator-stable?download

During the install, decline PDFArchitect by unchecking the checkbox for it when you reach the dialog where it's asked whether you wish to install it.  Like most free software, they bundle (a practice I find loathsome, but that ship has sailed).  And for people who want some automated assistance in avoiding bundled sofware that comes with the free stuff you want, take a look at Unchecky, which while not 100% effective, works very well.

Thanks, Brian.  Thankfully, I do have Kurzweil on my laptops and I don’t think I want to tackle asking to have another converter added to my work laptop. Typically a  rough OCR scan is sufficient to get my head around documents for work. I use Kurzweil if I need tables and such in the PDF.

WARNING: This email originated externally. Exercise caution. Think before clicking links or opening attachments.

Robin,

You might want to consider another option:  Using Tracker Software’s PDF-Xchange Viewer to OCR Process Image Scanned PDFs

I only wish PDF-Xchange Viewer were completely accessible but, alas, it's not, but it's perfectly accessible for this purpose, and very fast for short (read, under 50 pages) documents.  I've used it to process documents of several hundred pages that were originally imaged scanned, and its OCR accuracy is very, very good.  I've had clients who wanted to OCR in languages other than English, Spanish, German, and French (the default four that "come with") and they have language packs available at no cost for something like 25 or 30 languages.

In any case, the advantage being that the text layer gets saved with the PDF if you follow that tutorial (Disclosure: I wrote it) and then, if you so choose, you can open that PDF in any of the versions of Word from 2013 and later and have the text come right in.

I'm not a huge fan of the OCR features of any of the screen readers except for "quick and dirty" use on the fly.  Dedicated tools work better, in my experience, and even though it's a bit more tedious it's a "one and done" affair for any given PDF file.  This all started when I had a couple of clients who were graduate students who were constantly being handed old image-scanned PDFs as part of their course reading.  I suggested to them that after doing the above, they send the resulting OCRed file back to their professor and ask that it be used going forward so that no other blind student will need to do what they did again.  Most were pretty good about having the original image-scanned files in their course archives replaced by the OCRed versions when those were supplied to them.

No, not JAWS, but Word. I’m trying to suggest that although you’ve been told the problem occurs across versions of Word, I’m finding otherwise.

I went from Jaws 18 to 2022, I did not have any of the Jaws versions in between.  I don’t know how to get Jaws 19 or 21 without spending a ton of money I don’t have.  Microsoft told me there are other versions that are having the same problem.

Hello,

Is anybody having problems with spell checking using Microsoft Word 2016.  I have Jaws 2022 and Windows 10.

When I try to spell check, Jaws will not read anything past the first wordd ...... Complete silence.  This problem started approximately 1 ½  months ago.  I have spent many hours on the phone with Freedom Scientific and Microsoft disability with no resolution of this problem.  Microsoft disability has placed an escalation and will be calling me Wednesday to further investigate this issue.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, that's for Safe Mode with Networking.  I never use Safe Mode without networking, so I didn't bother doing the registry tweaks for that state.

Out of curiosity, is Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 the version in Windows 7 or Windows 10?

Subject: Sound settings do not appear to be turned on in Safe Mode in Windows 10

Hello everyone:

The subject line says it all. Earlier today, I checked the check box to have the system boot to safe mode, under the Boot Tab in MsConfig, saved the setting change then, I restarted the computer. . However, after waiting for about 2 minutes, I determined that the sound settings for the default sound card are not enabled for Windows 10 in Safe Mode. I was certain that the system had restarted in Safe Mode, and on that assumption, I used another computer with MsConfig to follow the steps, to uncheck the check box for the original computer then, I restarted the computer, which started in full Windows mode.

I have no idea how far back this problem goes, I do remember, the System Sounds were turned on for the last major update in 2019 because, I can remember booting Windows 10 into Safe Mode at that time and being able to use both Narrator and NVDA

Do you now need to initialize a setting in standard Windows in order for the System Sounds to be turned on for safe mode?

Dave
