According to Vispero's web site on the "What's new in JAWS" page, for JAWS 2022 it says that support for Windows 7 and 8.1 is discontinued, so I would think that JAWS 2021 is the latest version of JAWS that you could use on Windows 7.

Good afternoon, listers, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio.  Go to freedomscientific.com and then go to downloads and then go to hardware drivers and you’ll want to download the first driver.  Then just run it and install it and you should then be able to use whatever camera or scanner you have with jaws ocr.  BZ!

“…there may be nothing added after 2019 that would improve Jaws in windows 7.”

There is one important reason to use JAWS 2021. This was the oldest version which was updated to support the new JAWS Tandem server interface that was adopted a while back.

Mike,

Dave Durber's theory is pretty much what I would have said.  I do know that using Safe Mode in the Boot Tab of MSCONFIG switches the General Tab from Normal startup to Selective startup "under the hood" and unchecking it afterward doesn't seem to undo that particular switch.  And as you've noticed, Selective Startup with at least the first two checkboxes checked is behaviorially indistinguishable from Normal startup, in my experience.

This really comes down to how you want to "undo" Safe Mode.  I don't have the time to try it right now, but I do believe that choosing Normal startup in the General Tab will automatically uncheck Safe Mode if it is checked in the Boot Tab.

I don't sit and play with MSCONFIG and its tab interactions frequently enough to have every eccentricity memorized.  I've dealt with this often enough over years though to have seen Normal startup as the "out of the box" default.  And that really makes perfect sense, as Normal startup is what you'd expect that default to be just based upon its name.

I'm going to have to peek on my Windows 11 machine to see what MSCONFIG shows.  I clean installed Windows 11 and know that since I did so I've never started that machine in Safe Mode.

Well, and I do admit to just being a casual user and playing around with the Word settings a bit, but I have the problem with the spell checker with both JAWS 2022 and the beta of 2023, and I’m using the Microsoft 365 personal subscription. I don’t, however, have the problem with JAWS 2021. But with JAWS 2022 and 2023, the spell checker chokes even when trying to spellcheck just The Quick Brown Fox sentence. Note, though, that I primarily work with documents which are four pages or less in length. Anyway, for what it’s worth, here are the things I might try.

First, if it is something where I want just a quick glance of where there might be errors, I use the JAWS keys provided for that purpose, meaning the shift plus alt plus L to give a list of the spelling errors in the document or the shift plus JAWS key plus G to get a list of grammatical errors in the document.

Second, although I don’t do this often, I might use NVDA to spell check a document since it does seem to work without a problem.

And third, as it also works for me, I might go back to JAWS 2021 and use it to make sure my document is okay.

Although I could be wrong here, I don’t think I am when I say that if you are authorized to use a newer version of JAWS, it automatically authorizes prior versions as well. Thus, you might download the 2021 version of JAWS and install it and see if it works. And even if it doesn’t, since each JAWS version is its own separate program, the worst that could happen is you still have your 2022 version installed and you also have a demo of 2021 installed which you could then uninstall if you like.

I went to the ?Freedom Scientific site and to the downloads page and selected JAWS and then the link for the previous versions of JAWS. Then for some reason, I couldn’t get to the link to download the 2021 version, not sure if it was because I already have that version installed or what, but I was able to do a Google search and found one of Mike B’s messages with the link, so I will give that below after I give my other information about the version of things I use where spell checking works. As with you, I sure hope Microsoft or Freedom Scientific or whoever gets this resolved for us soon.

Anyway, in case it matters, I am in the United States, and here is the info I mentioned:

Microsoft disability help escalated my case and called me today.  They informed me they have had numerous reports of this problem with other versions of word as well and they aare “working on it”.  They told me there are two ways for a “work around”.  One way is to put the document onto a flash drive and spell check it in a computer with an older version of Word.  The other way is to find a third party spell checker software program and download it to my computer.

Hopefully they will come up with a fix for this soon.  Again, thank you for responding with your suggestions.

Hello Vicky:

I am glad that the ALT+F7 combination is working for you. I hope you are also taking advantage of the JAWS Text analyzer. Put your cursor at the beginning of the document and press ALT+WINDOWS+I. JAWS will identify things like font changes, running spaces, missing quotes, etc.

Best wishes,

I kind of hate to admit it, but I don’t know a lot about the alt plus F7. However, when I tried it just now, it did seem to work okay with both JAWS 2022 and the 2023 beta. I mean, I hit the alt F7, immediately got a list of suggestions and could hit the space bar to select my choice, and then the menu closed, and I was put back in my document where I could repeat the process for the next misspelled word. I could also tab to the ignore all button, but there was a delay of about three or four seconds from when I would hit the tab key to when I was given that option. Also, this alt F7 key did tell me about needing a comma in one place, as well as having two spaces between words in one place in a document.

Subject: Re: Spell checker problems with Microsoft Word 2016

I went from Jaws 18 to 2022, I did not have any of the Jaws versions in between.  I don’t know how to get Jaws 19 or 21 without spending a ton of money I don’t have.  Microsoft told me there are other versions that are having the same problem.

Laura, as I explained, I had the problem with Word 2016 but not 2019, which I installed last month. Others on this list have 2021 and don’t seem to have encountered it, either.

Hello, Curtis,

Thank you for these suggestions.  I tried them both without success.

As a work-around, have you tried using Alt F7 to find the next misspelled word? Once found, you can activate the context menu to see what your options are.

Another way to do this is to turn on the Quick Keys with JAWS Key plus z. Then, press m to find the next misspelled word. To find the next error, turn on the Quick Keys again and then press m.

Hello,

Is anybody having problems with spell checking using Microsoft Word 2016.  I have Jaws 2022 and Windows 10.

When I try to spell check, Jaws will not read anything past the first wordd ...... Complete silence.  This problem started approximately 1 ½  months ago.  I have spent many hours on the phone with Freedom Scientific and Microsoft disability with no resolution of this problem.  Microsoft disability has placed an escalation and will be calling me Wednesday to further investigate this issue.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Laura

Hello:

It is a mystery to me why some folks are experiencing the spell checker locking while others (like me) are using it without any issues. No one from Vispero or Microsoft seems to know what is causing the problem and why it is not consistently a problem for every single user of Microsoft Office 365.

It may be that grammar checking causes the issue. I don’t know. What I do know is that I don’t check grammar while spell checking.

Question: does ALT+F7 seem to work for those of you having the trouble?

Kindly,

Curtis Chong
