Hi Bill and all. Bill, did as you recommended, and it said the Cortana button was off. I then restarted computer, desktop, and, Cortana, was not there now. As mentioned before by me, I had pressed the Windows (C) key and Cortana started and from there could not get it to shut off. Will I have to restart computer  if this ever happens again, or is there a keys stroke   such as pressing the Windows (C)

again to shut it off?

Thanks very much for helpful information.

Hi, Morey. To turn off Cortana,
1. Press the Windows key or Windows plus S for Search.
2. In the search box, type Startup.
3. Press ENTER.
4. When the search results come up, look for the search term, Startup Apps, and press ENTER on that.
5. TAB through your Startup apps, and make sure Cortana is off.

Hi Brian. You are absolutely correct, I confused myself.

First...I was trying to say that I had gone into the settings to see if
the Meet me for Cortana was shut off and it was. But now it is still
showing up all the time, meaning Cortana. I have tried turning off
computer, restarting, but it is still there. Hope this clears that up.
Sorry to go to another question right after that about the clipboard but
I was carrying on...sorry but thanks for input.

Hi guys:

I am using goldwave to edit mp3 files.

When I move the start and finish markers around,

Jaws is telling me where they left from, not what their positions are when they land.

So,

If my start marker is set at the beginning of the file,

The start marker will be at 0.000 seconds.

If I ove the marker with shift+right arrow, it should say 0.100 seconds as I move by one tenth of a second;

Instead jaws says 0.000 seconds, (the place it was before I moved the marker.

It is like Jaws needs to wait to tell me where the markers are only after the markers settle down.

I hope this makes sense to you all.

Morey,

I am very confused as to whether you're asking about how to deal with Cortana or how to use the Clipboard History feature that was introduced late in Windows 10 and that carries over to Windows 11.  Since you say you have Cortana silenced, I'll stick to the second.

You can turn on Clipboard History in Settings, System, Clipboard Pane.  You still use the standard cut/copy commands (CTRL + X, CTRL + C, respectively) to collect things on the clipboard, but you need to use WinKey + V if you want to see all of the things you have collected and to paste individual items.

I believe there have been a number of discussions on using Clipboard History as a screen reader user on the Windows Access with Screen Readers Group (Formerly: Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group)

Hi all. First off I hit the Windows C key and cortana came up and will shut off. It is Cortana this and Cortana that...what the heck. I went into settings and the meet me thing is off as was from another tip.

Now a second question. Example..I go to document and select a sentence and copy it to clipboard..good so far. Somewhere I heard a tip in which a person can add another sentence  into the clipboard without it over-riding the first one put in.  Any thoughts as to what that keystroke may be?

I was trying some different keystrokes and that is where the Windows C keystroke came from in begging of this message. Sorry to be so long winded.

Thanks,

Hi,

From last evening, my wife’s laptop is experiencing the same thing.I can tab through the different links on any webpage; even the Google search, but neither the arrow or H key is working. This laptop is also an HP, but my Dell is not having the same problem. But then again, it is not running JAWS2022.

No, what I  did,  is, is even though I now have the router on, even with the virtual cursor on, when I try navigating the headings with the H key, It just says HHH and won’t advance.  I can get on to the net just fine, with no problem. This problem just seems too have occurred on both mine, and My girlfriends computers.  She has an HP laptop computer with windows 10, and the latest Jaws 2022, and I have a dell laptop computer with latest Jaws 2022, and also, windows 10.

The router?

So are you saying you have no internet connection/can’t do anything on the internet?

I think you’re hearing “h h h “ because the virtual cursor is off. It’s the virtual cursor/buffer that allows you to do things like navigate by headings. Otherwise, you’re just pressing the h key, and adding the letter hs to something, probably in the address bar. You can press f6 to move away from the address bar.

Good afternoon Mr.  Casey,

It seems that when I perform a search with the virtual cursor

On, and try using the H key too navigate headings on a web page, It just keeps saying, HHH, and won’t advance too the next headings.  I even tried doing a refresh command using the control R key function, as well as performing a screen redraw using the insert escape key, and no luck. When I called the Microsoft disability answer desk last evening, they suggested that I unplug the router.  When I turned the router back on, I got the same result.  So as both you and brian can see, I’m really trying everything here, too explain what’s happening here.

What you’ve described, though I’m sure it reflects what you actually did, doesn’t seem to make sense.

The virtual cursor would be off for you to enter text, but not to read it on a webpage. If you move focus to the address bar, the virtual cursor will also not be on in that area. The virtual cursor being on or off doesn’t effect what text coems up. It does however affect what you can do with the keyboard.

Same here, on both counts.  I'm generally trying to look up a phone number rather than using one for a reverse look-up.

And my default search engine is not Google, but even with an alternative default search engine a phone number entered in the address bar (omnibar, really) followed by enter triggers a search using the search engine you have set as default.  Accuracy is much better if the phone number has punctuation than when it's a straight string of numbers with no separation between groupings.

This has been an ongoing thing with Chrome which I suspect most of us just ignore with more than a little annoyance. This problem is outweighed in my mind by the positives which I experience using this browser. We have lots of stuff like that in our world. For example, JAWS often repeats things that we don’t want or need to hear. Honestly, I haven’t found a way around this except to press CTRL or just wait<smile>.

The only problem to this approach is that JAWS loads last at startup, which means that you don't always hear any pre-JAWS error messages. If JAWS is configured to start up in the registry, it loads quite early. The down side to this is what you are experiencing, but the up side is that if any apps trigger errors during the load process, more often than not, JAWS will catch and read them, so I don't like this shell approach.

A simpler is to configure JAWS not to load when Windows starts, then copy the JAWS icon from the desktop or start menu to the Startup folder in the start menu. Then it loads fully and properly every time. No need to check it after every boot.

I know several people that this happens to, and a little trick to know
when this happens is to do the following.
After your computer starts and Jaws is running press, Insert + J, to
open the Jaws context menu. Now right arrow and if you don't get a
Jaws menu option like, Basics, and you get the System context menu
instead your Jaws isn't fully loaded.
Close Jaws with, Insert + F4, and restart using a Jaws shortcut
keystroke, typing, jaws2022, into the Run dialog and press enter, or
press enter on your Jaws desktop icon to restart and Jaws should start
fully loaded.

One thing I have noticed about JAWS when it is run from the start menu
instead of from the registry. It seems to be a whole lot more
consistent about reading everything that it is supposed to be reading.
I was having a lot of problems with JAWS not reading things it should
be, but now that it has been run from the start menu, or better yet,
through a shortcut, it is reading everything.

I wonder if it would be worth my time telling Vispero about this and

Gery,

I suggest you do a search for "using outlook with a screen reader". You should get results from Microsoft support with individual articles covering almost everything you will need. There are about a dozen articles that explain how to use the keyboard to access Outlook, including a list of keyboard shortcuts Outlook supports. When you access one of these articles, you will see "See also..." at the end, with links to the other related articles.

This way I can add and remove names from the list as needed. Is there a book or document that contains information about using outlook from the keyboard?

There is a place in the bottom left of the screen called the navigation bar that provides sighted users a quick way to move between sections of outlook.  The faster way to move is with Control 3, which moves you to your Contacts list. Control 1 is inbox and Control 2 is calendar.  Just in case you are curious, Control Tab will move you between  the areas on the screen, including the navigation bar and, once there, you can arrow to People, but it takes you to the same Contacts section as Control 3.  I use the Control Tab method to move to the folder tree-view, although there are other ways to get there.

Once you on the Contacts section, you can go to the ribbon with Alt and find a button to create a new group.

I need to correct myself and advise that you don't do the instructions below that I previously posted. I had thought that this only affected programs started by a registry entry. I have since discovered that it also affects programs in the Startup folder in the start menu so it would prevent JAWS from loading.

If anyone used these instructions and discovered what I did, I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused you.

Since the problem seems to be from starting JAWS from the registry, let me add an instruction for you that will achieve the same as what I did but is safe for those who should not be doing anything with the registry.
1. Press Windows+I to get into settings
2. Tab over to the list of options and arrow down to "Apps" and press Enter.
3. Tab over to the new list of options then press the End key to get to the Startup option, then press Enter.
4. Tab until you land on the "Application for JAWS" entry which will be turned on.
5. Press Space to turn it off.
6. You are done, you can press Alt+F4 to exit.
This will prevent JAWS from being started by the registry and leave it to the shortcut in the Startup folder in the Start menu.

Hi Gene:

The procedure I use is meant for people who cannot or should not be fooling around with the Windows Registry.

JAWS does have two startup options: startup at login and startup for all users, both of which are turned off on my system. Then, for this user, I set it to "never".

I think what you did is absolutely fine, but I would never myself suggest for most folks to do what you did without some local support on their end<smile>.

Best wishes,

I did what you did but in my own way. JAWS does not remove it's start up
entry from the registry so I go in and delete it myself. Then I add the
JAWS shortcut to the startup folder in the system wide startup menu
which is different from what you did, you only added the JAWS icon to
your user start menu.

But at the end of the day, it did fix the system tray icon not showing up.

Hello:

One warning about the approach I use to start JAWS from shell:startup. When, in the fall, you choose to update to, say, JAWS 2023, you will want to be sure to update the shell:startup folder with the new shortcut. This will not happen automatically.

Best wishes,

Curtis Chong

Yeah, it's just not normal behavior and I want to figure it out if at
all possible because abnormal behavior means that something isn't quite
right.

So, I'm just curious -- if the method of accessign jaws works as expected, why restart jaws just to get it to appear int eh  tray?
Funny, this thread inspired me to actually look and -- I can't find JAWS in my system tray either. Now that I think about it, I don't remember the last time when I noticed it there. I guess it's been like that for yearsa nd I never even noticed anything strange. Is this just one of those computer niggles that you simply must figure out the reasoning behind a    nd solve? I've certainly been there.

Hm.
Don't know about this problem, but kind of wondering, what happens when you hit insert+j to access the JAWS menu? Since the application is loaded and working, I assume all its commands also work? I never go to the system tray toaccess JAWS features, I just keep it there so it's not runnings a window all the time.

Subject: Strange behavior with JAWS tray icon

Hi everyone!

This is a really strange one. I have JAWS set up to load when Windows loads but not to load for the log on screen because I don't use it. I also have it set to run from the system tray and to run minimized.

When the system first starts, the JAWS icon is nowhere to be seen even though JAWS is loaded and running and working properly. If I then exit JAWS, then reload it, the JAWS icon is now displayed in the system tray!

I have Windows set up to always show all icons in the system tray so no icons should be hidden.

Anyone else seen this behavior and know how to fix it? I have already tried doing a repair install.

Thanks!
Gene...

I think it’s just saying “untitled” because for a brief moment there, no page is loaded. This is the same thing you get when you open a fresh empty tab or if you set your homepage to blank. Your screen-reader is just doing its job.

Sometimes, and quite often, when I start Google Chrome, before the page comes up, JAWS says,

Untitled - Google Chrome

Is anyone else experiencing this, and is it happening in a certain situation? Is there a fix for this besides using another browser?
