That's what I do when I'm at home, but when you are traveling, unless you want to carry an extra piece of equipment around with you, you have to use the laptop's keyboard.

Moderated Strange PDF Conversion Issue Involving Jaws

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone, one more time.

Today must be my day for Jaws-related questions.

I just converted a Microsoft Word document to a PDF file, and used Adobe Acrobat DC to read the file.  Jaws keeps saying “MC-ref graphic” between each line of the file.

I have no idea what this means, and how to get rid of it.

Interestingly, this is the first time I have seen this vehavior, and I don’t see it with several PDF files that I recently converted.

I wonder if it is something with the file itself.

Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks for putting up with all my quiries today.

Moderated Firefox Bookmarks Question

Tom Behler

Hello again, everyone.

Now that I’ve got my new bookmark added to Google Chrome, I am trying to also add it to Firefox.

I’ve got the new bookmark added to Firefox, but, for some reason, the new bookmark did not end up in the correct alphabetical order in my bookmark list.

I used to use the plain old favorites add-on to accomplish re-sorting by name, but can’t seem to get to that add-on in the newest version of firefox.

Is there another way to sort bookmark names alphabetically in Firefox?

Thanks again!

Although I don't agree with any argument for not using the screenshade, either with the Jaws function, or with the laptop's function, because if you are referring to the laptop's feature, you can plug it into an external monitor if you have to do for sighted assistance, I would also suggest that one can tape a sheet of paper to the top and it can be flipped up if it is needed.

So sorry, the issue is that while some documents are created as word documents (all the narrative statements), many of the documents are already in PDF or saved as PDFs because they are email messages. For context, it is a tenure application document, so it has to contain proof of all kinds of academic work I have done over the past 4 years. So, the linking can’t take place until everything is combined into a single PDF.

Thanks,

Cynthia,

You don’t happen to mention what application you’re using to prepare the huge document for contract renewal. I understand that the ultimate output will be in PDF format from your subject line but I wouldn’t think composing the original source document using an Adobe product would be ideal. In the event you are using Microsoft Word to compose your source document, you might check out the article “Add hyperlinks to a location within the same document” from Microsoft Support at the following link:

I understand that Word documents can be saved as PDF files from within Word itself and I would assume any links they contain would carry over to the saved PDF file but I’ve never done this myself.

Good luck with your project.

Alan and Cynthia,

This is a very constructive approach to the problem. However, in my experience with Word 2016, links in a Word document were not preserved when I converted it to PDF. Perhaps someone knows how it can be done. I haven’t tried making the conversion with Word 2019, never mind 2021, which I don’t have installed.

Hi, Stan. Try the following. It is a little complicated, but it may solve your problem with voicing of rows, headers, etc.

If Emails Read As Tables

1. Open Outlook.

2. Press JAWS key plus six on the numbers row for JAWS Settings.

3. Arrow down to Web / HTML / PDFs, and Right Arrow to open.

4. Arrow down to Reading, and Right Arrow to open.

Subject: silencing chart details in outlook emails

Friends: I am using windows 10, j2022 and outlook 2016.

How can I silence  Jaws from telling the details about details such as rows, headers, etc.?

Thanks  for your help.

The real solution to my dilemma is to get Freedom Scientific to make OCR scanning of PDF documents in Chrome, Edge and possibly other PDF readers.

No, jaws ocr only works with acrobat. However, you can hit ctrl  + p to print and choose save as pdf from choose printer combo box. Then load pdf with acrobat/ jaws ocr.

From what I found on Vispero's web site, the screen shade feature was available in earlier versions of JAWS but couldn't be used on some laptops because their keyboards lacked a print screen key, so they added F11 as an alternative way to activate the feature in JAWS 2019.

If you want to find out from your copy of JAWS what it supports, press JAWS+space to enter layered mode, then press the question mark to get layered mode help. You'll get a browseable list of layered mode features and what key to use to get to them.

It should be available on any version of JAWS starting with 2019. So for JAWS 2022 that would be a yes.

If you are running JAWS 2019 you should be able to use the JAWS screen shade feature.

To toggle the screen shade on or off press JAWS+space where JAWS is your JAWS key (either insert or caps lock), this will enter JAWS' layered mode. Then press F11 or Print Screen.

What I did back then was to take advantage of a feature in most laptops.

In most laptops you can adjust the screen brightness by using Fn+up
arrow or Fn+down arrow where Fn is the laptop's blue function key
which is located between the alt and control along side the windows
key just to the left of the space bar.

I would just turn the screen's brightness all the way down.
