Re: How to turn off/disable the log on screen so you do not have to enter a password, each time you start or restart the computer
Agreed! The only link I had was for a Windows 7 version, I got rid of it because I'd rather have a Windows 10 version.

Maybe this was mentioned at the beginning of this thread, I didn't read the first few, but can't you go into account control in control panel, and go to change account password and leave the field blank there? Or, another idea is to run a change password utility, like chntpw which will allow you to change it to a blank field Glenn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Warner" <genewarner3@...> To: <main@jfw.groups.io> Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2022 2:58 PM Subject: Re: How to turn off/disable the log on screen so you do not have to enter a password, each time you start or restart the computer
I believe that the easiest way to get rid of the password if you simply can't delete it is to use the new account method I outlined in a previous message.
I haven't looked but there might be a third party utility that can remove the password for you if Microsoft won't let you.

I think you have to create a new administrator account as a local account, then make that your primary account. Transfer all you apps, files, and settings to the new account, then delete the old one.
Please make a backup before you try this just in case I'm wrong.

Re: How to turn off/disable the log on screen so you do not have to enter a password, each time you start or restart the computer
Since I wire everything I can to my network, disconnecting the Ethernet cable would be the way to go for me. Wired is not only more secure than wireless, it's also faster and more reliable, so I keep wireless connections to the absolute minimum.

That still works? That's how I did it last time.
What worries me is that I have heard that Microsoft has taken away the ability to set up Windows using a local account, which would prevent you from doing that.

Re: How to turn off/disable the log on screen so you do not have to enter a password, each time you start or restart the computer
Howard, it is much easier to bypass the password setup during the installation than do it after the fact. But it can be done, although I haven't tried it recently myself. If you're on Windows 11 I would consider doing a clean install to Windows 11. Paul

Re: How to turn off/disable the log on screen so you do not have to enter a password, each time you start or restart the computer
Hello Dave,
If you are doing a clean install of Windows, when you get to the point where it askes you to enter your password, simply hit ENTER. It will skip that process and after the setup you won't need to enter a password each time you login. I've done that on three Windows 11 machines in the recent weeks.
If you have already installed Windows, it is more of a faff to remove the password. But it can be done.

After I complete the setup process, and I make some necessary changes, such as, setting the UAC prompt reminder level to 0, I then connect the ethernet cable or, set up the wireless connection, and then get all the updates.

Probably not, but then after Windows is installed, you can always go into Windows update and click the "Look for updates" button. That's what I did when I first set up Windows 10 about four years ago.

I think that that was because you were no longer allowed to use a local account when setting up Windows, so you had to use a Microsoft account which must have a password.
