Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Shannon

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1                     there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one of the voices is doing this.  It is the same one that says the status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied.  And gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of 44.)

2                     I don’t like hearing the contents and then the cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3      How to make the entire first row  column headers and have it only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column.

Thanks

Shannon

Folks,

This thread's getting a little bit away from the original point, I think. While some topic drift is understandable, let's try and steer it back on track, please.

I have a stand from which I am able to take pictures of entire 8-1/2 by 11 inch sheets of paper.  I had a friend place a strip along the place where the bottom edge of the paper should be and along the edge of the stand where the side of the paper should rest against.  It has worked great for me.  I was able to scan in papers for my class assignments this way.

You may need a bit of help to do it the first time and to maybe set up some sort of guide for placing the cheque, but I’m sure it could be done reliably with one of these stands and maybe also with lots of practice free hand. I guess I have to give it a try some time, maybe I’ll write a cheque to myself and try it.

It seems that you need to align the camera just right to capture the check.  Also, it seems that you need to shut off voice over so to make it work.  I asked the credit union to see if it could be a better way but, they said that they could do it for me.....not the answer I am looking for.  Thank you for any help here.  Andy and Shubert

R works for radio buttons in WE but I thought the nav key for a radio button in JAWS was A?

But if you use the insert F3 it switcheds over to R?

Radio buttons or other virtual elements have to be present in an app.  Otherwise, you get the Find command, as stated.  If you hear the phrase “virtual HTML features,” you’re on the right track.  You can scroll down a list of 19 such features, including radio buttons.

Can you explain your Jaws+F3 and R command? Jaws Key+F3 is “find next” and I can’t see any connection to radio buttons. Usually a simple “r” is sufficient to move to a radio button.

Hi Sieghard,

I am now back at the unit with JAWS on it. Smile

I would say on a scale of 1 to 10, I fall at maybe 1.5? Haha

I am slowly trying to get used to the way JAWS does stuff. I have to admit that I still fall back on WE for a lot of things because it is just faster to get things done. I try to use JAWS to do things I know how to do. I find myself having to turn WE back on to get things finished.

I do know the C for combo box, H heading, A for radio button (but I am used to that function being R) I don’t understand the Regions? That is now what R is for.

The Touch Curser seems to be pretty cool but, I don’t understand it either.  It doesn’t seem to find the things I know are there either.

I don’t seem to have any luck using the JAWS find command at all. It never finds things I know are on the screen.  I don’t have much luck using the JAWS curser i.e. mouse  to find things I know are there.

There are tons of things about JAWS that I don’t know. I am slowly plugging away at the manual when I find a problem and think “there is a something for this”

Like just now… I had some spelling errors in my message. WE has a handy little thing where you can jump to the next and prior spelling errors. Alt and semicolon for prior and alt  apostrophe for next. I find it very handy I wonder If JAWS has a feature like this?

Thanks

Hi Shannon,

I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly activate mouseOver links etc.

I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who really knows to get the most out of Jaws

I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help.

I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.

Re: On Line Banking Update

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

No, Insert+F3 brings up a list of all HTML elements, there are a total of 20 items in this list, you can use first letter navigation to go to a particular list like “l” will take you to the links list, press it again or down arrow and you get to the list items list, again or down arrow and you get to the lists list.

“r” will go first to  the radio buttons list and if you press it a second time it will go to  the Regions list.

Selecting the links list is the same as pressing Insert+F7, it’s just that if you don’t remember the shortcut keys like Insert+F5 for a list of forms fields, Insert+F6 for a list of headings and Insert+F7 for links, you can just remember this one shortcut, Insert+F3 and access all possible lists from there just as  you can access all settings items with Insert+F2 instead of having to remember that Insert+6 is for the Settings Centre, Insert+7 is for the Window Classes, Insert+8 is for the keyboard manager etc.

Hi All,

I thought some of you might be interested, or would find this keystroke beneficial.

Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly:

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Go to Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level
If it says none.  That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter.  Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open asking
if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the spacebar on
the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level.  So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear
the punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above steps.

Re: Punctuation Level, How To Change It On The Fly For Jaws Users

Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>

Mike,

This is very helpful.

Now, the one I want to change is the time.  Insert-f12 is not a very useful keystroke.

I followed your steps and did add control+dash to toggle through the punctuation levels.

I tried following the same process and finding say time or speak time or just time, but nothing matched.

Any help finding that setting so I can change it to something where I don’t have to take my hands off the keyboard would be appreciated.  I’m thinking insert+shift+t, since that doesn’t seem to be in use.

Thanks

I should mention this only happens when I use my right hand to exit, using the left, it is fine.  How do I fix my foul up in settings.

Hi Shannon,

You are correct that the key used to find radio buttons in JAWS is "A".
However, if you press insert and F3, you will get a list of controls that
you can arrow through to choose different controls. If you are in this list
and press "R", it will take you to the radio buttons entry in the list since
it begins with "R". Once that choice is highlighted, if you press enter,
you will get a list of all the radio buttons.

I hope that makes some sense.

Pam

to that function being R) I don't understand the Regions? That is now what R
is for.
The Touch Curser seems to be pretty cool but, I don't understand it either.
It doesn't seem to find the things I know are there either.
I don't seem to have any luck using the JAWS find command at all. It never
finds things I know are on the screen. I don't have much luck using the
JAWS curser i.e. mouse to find things I know are there.
There are tons of things about JAWS that I don't know. I am slowly plugging
away at the manual when I find a problem and think "there is a something for
this"
Like just now. I had some spelling errors in my message. WE has a handy
little thing where you can jump to the next and prior spelling errors. Alt
and semicolon for prior and alt apostrophe for next. I find it very handy I
wonder If JAWS has a feature like this?

Thanks
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I don't want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating
websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would
you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I
mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as
features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly
activate mouseOver links etc.
I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I
have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may
very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped
people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who
really knows to get the most out of Jaws
I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem
if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help.
I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on
before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.

Regards,
Sieghard

I have also had issue with this.

My thought to fix it. (Which I haven’t invented yet!) Create a phone stand that will fit the check under neith the camera. On paper this works but I don’t know about reality.

Other than that I have my sister do it. Smile

Hi,

From the run dialog, windows-r type or paste the below line and press
enter.
shutdown -f -s -t 0

This should force your computer to shutdown.
If you have any open documents that are not saved, it is best to save
them before doing this as it forces the machine to shut off regardless
if you have documents open and your changes won't be saved.

Re: On Line Banking Update

Hi Shannon,

You are correct that the key used to find radio buttons in JAWS is "A". However, if you press insert and F3, you will get a list of controls that you can arrow through to choose different controls. If you are in this list and press "R", it will take you to the radio buttons entry in the list since it begins with "R". Once that choice is highlighted, if you press enter, you will get a list of all the radio buttons.

I hope that makes some sense.

Pam

It seems that you need to align the camera just right to capture the check.  Also, it seems that you need to shut off voice over so to make it work.  I asked the credit union to see if it could be a better way but, they said that they could do it for me.....not the answer I am looking for.  Thank you for any help here.  Andy and Shubert

Ted, Sieghard,

I saw these messages yesterday and I just re-read them.

Now I am befuttled.

R works for radio buttons in WE but I thought the nav key for a radio button in JAWS was A?

But if you use the insert F3 it switcheds over to R?

Hmmmm

Thanks

Shannon

Right, forgot about this feature since I rarely use it, I mostly just use the quick nav keys for radio buttons, checkboxes, form fields, buttons etc. but I may have to try and use this a bit more as sometimes when there are quite a few of the same element this might come in handy.

Radio buttons or other virtual elements have to be present in an app.  Otherwise, you get the Find command, as stated.  If you hear the phrase “virtual HTML features,” you’re on the right track.  You can scroll down a list of 19 such features, including radio buttons.

Hi Ted,

Can you explain your Jaws+F3 and R command? Jaws Key+F3 is “find next” and I can’t see any connection to radio buttons. Usually a simple “r” is sufficient to move to a radio button.

Radio buttons are quickly accessible, when available, with JAWS-F3, followed by the letter R.  They get quite a workout over here.

Thanks

Shannon

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Kevin, I've been watching the saga. I'm glad you figured out the problem, but how did you solve it?

I have issues finding controlthings on my banking site as well. Just wondering what the tricks and tips are. Thanks Shannon

You’d better believe it.  Our worker portal is chock full of both regular and radio buttons.
