you could check in windows update in optional updates to see if maybe there are audio and video updates to be installed. this could be the problem.
maybe doing a jaws repair would help.
for me the only place jaws 17 and 18 has crashed is with firefox when i open the bookmark list.
even here, if i turn the virtual pc cursor off before i open the bookmark list it will not crash here either.
it does this with window eyes too, but not with n v d a

It depends on a lot more than the internet speed.
First of all, it helps if you tell us your version of Windows, version of Jaws and which browser you are using e.g. IE, Firefox, Chrome.
If you are on Jaws 18 or even 17 and are using Internet Explorer you might want to consider downloading Google Chrome, it is a much faster browser, but it will not work with Jaws 16 as far as I can tell.
There is little you can do if Jaws wants to crash for whatever reason, it just does from time to time, but it shouldn't happen 10 times a day, if it does then something else might be wrong with your particular configuration.

with web pages there isn't much you can do.
some sites load fast, some may not load at all if there server is down.
you can wait to see if it will load or try pressing f5 to reload the page.
it also depends on your internet down load speed you are useing.

Hi good people:
I am Ibrahim Ajayi from Nigeria. I am a new member of the group, as I joined a few minutes ago.
I have a question for the group.
Please, how can I stop my JFW from crashing? My screenreader crashes from time to time on some websites, and I don't understand why. Added to this, it takes a long time for JAWS to start reading on some websites.
Can anything be done about this?
Hope to read from you chaps.

reading andwriting email messages

Carol Smith

Hi,

I have an issue with email that occurs when trying to reply to messages. All starts out just fine. When I want to skip a line and press enter twice, I get the tones which indicate that I am shifting from standard writing screen to virtual cursor screen. This does not always happen, but at least a few times each time I run Jaws. I have now figured out that I can stop this from happening, but I still need to fix it when I get back to standard email reading. If I press insert-z when my message I am writing has flipped to virtual mode, all is OK again. This makes it possible to finish my email. When done, I must press insert-z again to read the next email. This does not happen every time I reply to messages. There does not seem to be a real pattern except that pressing enter to double-space will often switch from one to the other mode. I can press enter extra times, but this makes it confusing as to which mode is active and also makes it difficult to find out how many blank lines I have left.

I just pressed enter twice in this message and had no problem, although, I did play with the key command during the typing of this message to see what the name of the feature is.

Carol

Hey Shannon.

I think it's announcing the type of link you're pointing to. "Send Mail Link". JAWS 10 does that in Outlook 2003, on Mozilla Firefox, and even in Internet Explorer. As for how to make it stop, you could go to the Configuration Manager (Settings Center in JAWS 18), and click on HTML options. I think there might be something in there that lets you turn the "Link Type" announcement on or off.

That text is not truly written in the line of text. If you read that same line word by word those words are not there.

Why is it saying it? How can I make it stop.

I don’t want to hear things that are not there.

I often find Jaws telling me false things and leaving things out that are there, especially with the OCR, so I don’t want it to intentionally tell me wrong things. It won’t tell me things that I know are there either. I find this frustrating.

audio-ducking also in Startup Wizard, turn it off there for sure/permanency

Ashleigh Piccinino

Hello,

If you’d like to quit the audio-ducking permanently, … until you’d like it to be working again that is, here’s what to do. Go to your JAWS startup Wizard (jaws+h and arrow up to startup wizard). After pressing enter on this, you’ll be on the main page. You can press the tab to go to the next page, and tab until JAWS reports “lower the volume of other programs while JAWS is speaking.” This’ll be a radiobutto, and you can uncheck this if you don’t want it on. Keep pressing the next key until you get out of the wizard, and you should be good.

FreeNas is completly accessible. I just had to name the graphical links for the main menu so the names were shorter and to the point.
The Lanovo thinkserver TS-145 cost me 175 with a 75 discount. Then it was just the memory and harddrives. 4TB drives are cheaper now. A 7.2TB RAID 5 array cost me 400 and the RAM was under a hundred for 8GB ECC. I will be upgrading to 16. FrreeNas is a memory hog. :) It has been up and running with out a shut down or reboot for months now. It never goes to sleep since it has a server based motherboard.

Jonas,

Are you asking if Randy got a "free NAS"? Maybe you already know this, but checking out "FreeNAS" on Google told me that it was simply the name of an open source software for running NAS units, here is what it says on Wikipedia:

FreeNAS is a free and open-source network-attached storage (NAS) software based on FreeBSD and the OpenZFS file system. It is licensed under the terms of the BSD License and runs on commodity x86-64 hardware.
FreeNAS supports Windows , OS X and Unix clients and various virtualization hosts such as XenServer and VMware using the SMB , AFP , NFS , iSCSI , SSH , rsync and FTP/TFTP protocols.
Advanced FreeNAS features include full-disk encryption and a plug-in architecture for third-party software.

Sieghard

I was referring to Microsoft backup schemes... I gave up on finding an accessible backup program years ago and this method works for me. It may not work for everyone but when everything you hold dear is on a backup and it just wont work for whatever reason all your docs, music and pictures are lost forever. only took a couple of these situations to find something foolproof... Keep in mind this was before large amounts of cheap cloud storage was available.
thats how I ended up with a complete copy of every thing on a FreeNas server with a RAID 5 array. A second complete copy on a network drive and yet another on a USB drive and... Yep one more on my computer in addition to the media drive that is in daily use. Losing several years of the family photos wont ever happen again.

I have used Macrium for years and had to restore my system disk

not matter because I just put the recovery media in when I was
supposed to and it did the restore by itself.

[2 <text/html; windows-1252 (quoted-printable)>] I have never had a
windows system backup that worked right when it came to a total
system failure. Yes I have had a lot of them over the last 25 years due to experimenting with multi boot windows/Linux and trying to do advanced things that arent really blind guy friendly! LOL.
I keep all my important stuff on a separate hard drive in my system and copy the whole drive once in a while. My really important data goes on the cloud. Dropbox, Google drive and One drive.
Here is how I do it.
On the second hard drive (Mine is Media)create the folders you want to move. I.E. Favorites, Documents, Downloads, Pictures and videos.
Now go to c:\users\your user name\
highlight the Favorites folder then alt +enter. Now ctrl + tab to
the location tab. Then tab twice to move folder. press it. Now shift tab once. press t for this PC press enter then press m for media (yours may be different) press enter then f for favorites. Now tab to select folder and press it. Tab to OK then press yes to move the folder to the new location.
Repeat for the rest of the folders. Now Windows will put everything in these folders from now on and the library links will go to these folders from now on.
If you use thunderbird copy the thunderbird folders from c:\users\your user name\app data\local and roaming.
Now if the main drive fails or you need to do a clean install. Just
copy the Thunderbird folders back to appdata local and roaming and all your info is there just move the folders to the Media drive again and it is like it was before the crash.
You will still need to install apps and setup your accounts. But with
Windows 10 that is fairly easy. Not like win 7. One of the few
things that is really better. :)

Hi. Whatʼs the difference between windows backup and a system backup. Also tried to use macrein reflect, but did do a windows backup, but then decided to delete it and now cannot do a system image backup. Is the system image a good
backup? Any help, or step by step tips, or tutorial. Or more accessible software. Got windows 10 64 bit pro running latest jaws 18 and jaws beta 2018. Backing up to my Toshiba external drive 1 tb, and about a 300 gb backup. Any help,
tips, or maybe any one had experience with backing up. Just doing a backup now. And got the schedule every Sunday, so notifications will let me know need to backup. Marvin.
