You’re cordially invited to participate in an audio talk by Joseph Lee on Windows 10, to be held on Accessible World Pat Price Tek Talk room on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 5 PM Pacific. In this talk, Joseph will talk about recent changes to Windows 10 ecosystem, demonstrate key features included in Version 1803 (Spring Creators Update), and showcase a mystery feature from a future version of Windows 10, all using screen readers.

I called the Microsoft answer desk but they said that they were not
trained in skype.

Hello,

I’m just starting to use Windows 10 and I have a problem with using Internet Explorer. I do a search on some item. It then comes up with a list of possible options. I down arrow and Jaws reads the list and I can never get off it. It just keeps repeating the list. I then try to tab and the same thing happens. Do I need to do something to Internet Explorer? Or does Jaws need to have some option turned on or off?

A simple thing to check first is to clean the connection between your speakers and your computer.  A static charge can build up there.  Unplug your speakers from the back of the computer and wipe the plug off with connection cleaner if you have it or just wipe it off if you do not.  Plug the speakers back into the same outlet and see if that takes care of it.

Many times the onboard audio chip are not the best!

Unfortunately, every soundcard’s settings and options are different. I have two computers, and the options are different for each one. I don’t know what to tell you, since you have already checked for updated drivers for your soundcard.

I turned off enhancements and it stopped the static. I rebooted and the static was back. I checked enhancements and it was off. I could not find sound affects under the sound card. Do you know where that is at under the sound card? Also ever once and a while it makes a clicking noise coming out of the left side of the laptop. I should also say the static only comes from letter keys and punctuation. The number keys on the top row or the numpad don’t create any static. Now what?

Yes, make sure all enhancements and sound effects are turned off in your soundcard.

Hello, I just got a new Acer Inspire 5 laptop. I installed Jaws2018. Whenever I’m in MS word or Excel there is static when Jaws speaks. I should say it only occurs when I type. Freedom Scientific suggested I get the most recent version which came out today. It helped a little. They also suggested I change to echo by word and not character. I then checked the sound card drivers and they are all up to date. I did all of these things and it helped a little. I then shut the laptop down and came back a few hours later. Well the static was back and even worse. It now has a problem on the internet using Internet Explorer. It is so bad I can hardly make out what Jaws is reading on the internet. I wonder if Acer is just using cheap sound cards. I had an Acer a few months ago and they same thing happen. That is why I got this one and hoped the problem would not exist. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers Kevin

I was about to say… While this sounds like a great deal, my first inclination is to believe that the lady was either confused by the query or simply didn’t know what she was talking about. As was mentioned in the original message, she was a Windows Eyes refugee. So who knows, maybe she just wasn’t’ up on her training. That or perhaps she was confuddled with a CSUN offer that may be going on right now.

I’m going to guess that Eric Damery if not overwhelmed with the CSUN stuff this week will chime in on this thread to clarify either way.

Most likely is that this is probably too good to be true and customer service staff (mainly Window Eyes transplants) are going to be sent a memo regarding the same.

Hi, Mike. I just called VFO to inquire about this new plan, whereby people who have gotten behind in their upgrades for the home version could upgrade to the latest version of JAWS for $200. The lady I spoke with at VFO disputed this. Can you give more information as to the person with whom you spoke?
