Hi,
Someone needs to go into (safe mode) and change the function keys
operation
for you. I had an HP which is the reason I know that. After that is done,
however, you can use the function keys like we are used to using them.

Here's another note. I also have an HP laptop and, in addition to that
missing application key, the F1 through Insert Keys don’t' work as I need
them to. I haven't gotten to having someone try to change the bios. I
mention this because sometimes that Shift F10 combination won't work
unless you also hit the FN key. Same goes for the Insert key. It's
rather annoying.

Subject: HP Lap top with a missing key

Hi All,
I have an HP lap top with a 101 type keyboard which means it has the numb
pad. There is an annoying problem. The key that is usually between the
ALT key and the CTRL key on the right side of the space bar is not there.
This was the key that we can use to open context menus mostly the same as
pressing the right mouse button. I miss having this function cause in
some applications routing the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor doesn't always
work.
Does anyone who has an HP lap top with this missing key know a work
around
or some key combination HP came up with to replace the key?

Thx -Steve

If you do not want to limit the region, just write the word title.
Then column and row titles will be read automatically as you move around the spreadsheet.
Or, use the command if you do not want to hear that info at each cell.

Try this. Go into the first cell , 1,1. Press Alt M, then M.
Type the following: TitleRegion1..M50, for example, if M50 was the last cell that has data in it. You are defining the region.
It is important to capitalize the T and R, make TitleRegion1..(letter,number) one word.
After that, Jaws should read the column and row headers for you. Hope that helps.

Hello:

Place your focus in a cell in the column you have the titles you wish to have spoken.  Then the key stroke is JAWS key + alt +control+ c.  Which will toggle the title reading on and off.

Note it is control and not shift.

Hello,

I have tried reading column titles through many versions of Jaws and it never has worked. I’m using Jaws2018 and Windows 10. I press the keys jaws, alt, shift and the letter  C and it says no column title. There is a column title. Do I need to turn on something else within Jaws to get this to work.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hello Kevin. There’s a DAISY book that tells you how to modify spreadsheets to make JAWS read row and Column titles. You’ll find it in the JAWS training  materials.

Hello All,

Is there a guide or tutorial for using JAWS 17 with Facebook? I am using
FB, doing chats, reading messages, clearing out all those irritating
"recommended friends", but there are other features I want to learn. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, if there is someone out there
who does telephone training on this subject, I would be glad to pay for

I am interestingly having a similar problem with my new Dell, and it sounds
as though it is related to missing keys. For me, the shift F10 solution
worked for bringing up the context menu. What I can't seem to do any more is
use control home or control end to go to the top or bottom of a document in
word 2016. The left and right arrows seem to be marked as home and end, but
that key command doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there another command for
this?

Hi All,
I have an HP lap top with a 101 type keyboard which means it has the numb
pad. There is an annoying problem. The key that is usually between the ALT
key and the CTRL key on the right side of the space bar is not there. This
was the key that we can use to open context menus mostly the same as
pressing the right mouse button. I miss having this function cause in some
applications routing the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor doesn't always work.
Does anyone who has an HP lap top with this missing key know a work around
or some key combination HP came up with to replace the key?

Thx -Steve

Someone needs to go into (safe mode) and change the function keys operation for you. I had an HP which is the reason I know that. After that is done, however, you can use the function keys like we are used to using them.

I think the sound card with which this person is having a problem, is the sound card on their motherboard.

If that is the case, the only way they could change the sound card is, to purchase a USB sound Card or, use a USB or Bluetooth headset.

If companies today, provided the same level of training to all their representatives and made sure that all their representatives new how to do their jobs properly, you should get the same information about their products and services, no matter the representative who speaks to you.

When I worked in a Housing advice center for a local authority in the UK during the 1980's, all of us who were advisors, received the same training and, further more, you were not allowed to advise the public, until you could prove you new and understood the advice you would have to give, no matter the questions you might be asked. Hi Cristóbal,

I know exactly what you mean, & how you & many others feel.  I don't want to mention the particular employees name because I don't want this person to lose their job if it is indeed a mistake.  But, I asked this person why others sales people make this offer, & this person said because it all depends on who you talk to to get this deal.  So, I'm inclined to believe that it might not be something that most will offer, but I just happened to catch the right person at the right time, with the right situation.  I upgraded a person that is elderly, a low fixed income, & no way in hell of ever getting upgraded if it wasn't for several things coming together, but most of all, this offer I couldn't let pass!

Hi Mike,

To be clear, while I’m current with my Jaws and thus this wouldn’t really affect me, I’d like for this to be true since it would help people in general.

I’m just skeptical in that it’s only one VFO person who said this where even the whisper of such a program hasn’t really been brought up before.

Like I said, I’m more inclined to think that there may have been some misinformation given out by one rep, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

I guess it can be an incentive to get more folks current so they and VFO can in turn get away from older OS’s like Vista and Windows 7, but on the other hand, if an upgrade is so cheap, where’s the incentive to stay current in the first place? I remember having to shell out around $440 to catch up on a two or three cycle upgrade back in the day. So yeah, that wasn’t fun.

I was about to say… While this sounds like a great deal, my first inclination is to believe that the lady was either confused by the query or simply didn’t know what she was talking about. As was mentioned in the original message, she was a Windows Eyes refugee. So who knows, maybe she just wasn’t’ up on her training. That or perhaps she was confuddled with a CSUN offer that may be going on right now.

I’m going to guess that Eric Damery if not overwhelmed with the CSUN stuff this week will chime in on this thread to clarify either way.

Most likely is that this is probably too good to be true and customer service staff (mainly Window Eyes transplants) are going to be sent a memo regarding the same.

Hi All,

The other day I called VFO / Freedom Scientific to see if they had any new financial plans for people that had gotten way behind because of financial difficulties, & wanted to get upgraded / updated to the latest version.  Well, to my surprise what I found out was absolutely fantastic!  A friend needed to be updated because he was at Jaws 11 & he needed to be upgraded to be compatible with the Windows 7 system he is moving to from XP.  Okay to cut this short, I found out people can be upgraded from Jaws 11 to Jaws2018 for $200.00.  The lady I talked to was a Window Eyes transplanted employee & she didn't know how long this financial plan had been in place.  So for all you that need to be upgraded but have financial difficulty, don't be afraid to call & inquire about new financial / payment plans!  This $200.00 plan is only for the Home versions.
