Moderated Jaws not seeing text or links on web site

Norma A. Boge

Hello group,

I am using Jaws 2020 updated and Jaws 2019. I’m having trouble with Jaws finding links and text in part of a website. NVDA sees this page perfectly, so I’m hoping someone might have a suggestion as to how to get Jaws to do the same. Underneath the heading for “Our Staff” should be links to a number of different persons, Jaws is not seeing any of this. Here’s the link, any helpful feedback very appreciated. Best, Norma

I kinda doubt that this is possible, I have no idea how JAWS determines it, but apparently the SCAN cursor is used only when the JAWS cursor would produce no
results.

Hi,

Is it possible to disable this and go back to using the old JAWS Cursor to stop it automatically swapping to JAWS scan cursor?

Dear David, Richard, Richie & List:

Old JAWS settings do not migrate automatically, you must select the old settings you wish to migrate as part of the JAWS 2020 installation . It is simple, select the old settings to migrate and press the space bar on the migrate button. Usually only takes a few seconds to do the migration.

They should. Should being the operative word there.

If not, run the Startup Wizard from the help menu.

That should give you an option to import your settings, I think.

Mine have transferred over between 2019 and 2020. I think I ended up having to run the wizard between 2018 and 2019 but not sure.

As I recall, you’re prompted to import the settings when the new version (2020, in your case) first starts.

Well you need to find the jaws command key strokes to read the status line and then you can arrow right and left to all the items in the status line.

I just found the PictureSmart folder in My Pictures and pasted a Jpeg into this folder.  Nothing happened.  When I pressed JAWS key plus Space bar then P then F, JAWS then described the picture, but it did not start automatically with JFW 2019.

Another way is, if you have a picture as a .JPEG or some other picture format save it somewhere, then copy / paste it into the Picture Smart folder and once it's pasted into this folder the Picture Smart feature will start on it as soon as it's pasted.  The Picture Smart folder is located in your User Name folder as a sub-folder of the My Pictures folder.

Open the picture.

Select all with a control a.

Save to clipboard with a control c

Then JAWS key plus space bar, then p then b.

That should start the Picture Smart.

You also can try.

Select the file of the picture.

Then Jaws key plus space bar then p then f.

Sieghard,

This is a great idea. Window-Eyes allowed you to change the sounds that it used from the Sounds app via Control Panel. You're right: JAWS should have the same capability. I'll need to update my huge list of suggestions in my feature wish list ...

Hi, Sieghard.

I think what the original questioner wanted to know was how to disable the sound that you hear when the autocomplete list is generated but not how to disable Outlook's autocomplete feature, which I agree is extremely useful. I personally find that particular sound to be extremely jarring and harsh on my ears, particularly when I use a headset. I believe this sound is from JAWS and not from Outlook and I personally find it annoying. I don't believe there is a setting to disable that particular sound from within Quick Settings and there really needs to be. The various sounds are located in the folder

C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2020\Settings\enu\SOUNDS

and there are two Outlook autocomplete sound files, one for start and the other for end. A user could substitute their own sound files for the defaults, ensuring that they properly rename them back to the original names of the files to ensure that they still work. It is likely that deleting these files without replacing them would just result in no sounds at all without breaking the Outlook scripts but I haven't tried it to verify.

Not sure why you wouldn’t want auto-complete, I use it all the time since mostly I just have to type a few characters of the person’s name and then I can arrow if necessary to find the person.

But to turn it off just go to File > Options, go to the Mail category and then tab about 40 times, if you don’t want to tab that much you can also press Alt + G when you are on the Mail category.

But of course if you do tab through all these options, you get to know what they are and it’s always good to know where things are and what you can change/customize.

Hi.

When I’m typing an e-mail, in the to field, jaws will play a sound that indicates recent people you’ve contacted. Is there a way to turn this off, and where do I find it?

Thanks.

i havd just unplugged my usb keyboard and linked it to another usb port
and now the problem does not occur.
it could be the effec of unlinking and linking the keyboard or because
of a diffedrent usb port.
i have usb 3 and usb 2 ports on this machine although i don;t know if
that matters in this case.
any way thanks for your help.
