Tom Behler

Hello again.

To the person who suggested that I check battery saver settings, I did so, and battery saver is slated to kick in when my battery goes down to 20%.

The lagging issue with Jaws occurs no matter how much battery capacity I have, and occurs only on battery power.

The computer works fine when plugged into commercial AC power.

Subject: Dell Laptop Laggy With Jaws On Battery Power

Hello, everyone.

Ever since I bought it back in 2018, my Dell Windows laptop gets very laggy when using Jaws on battery power.

In other words, when I type, there is about a one-half to one second delay between when I hit a key, and when Jaws responds.

I have taken this computer to the Best Buy Geek Squad, and they can’t seem to get to the bottom of the issue.

The computer runs fine with Jaws when plugged into normal AC power, which is how I operate most of the time.

I’m thinking some sort of a setting needs to be changed, but I can’t find where it might be.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Don,

Try the following.

Go into Settings Center with JAWS key+6.

Locate the tree view, then arrow down to and expand Speech verbosity.

Take note of which verbosity level JAWS is set to, then arrow down to and
expand Configure verbosity levels.

Press space on the level that JAWS is set to (enter will close you out of
Settings Center), and make sure the first check box "announce position and
count when in lists" is checked.

Then, Tab once and make sure the radio button is set to "Long".

Then keep pressing ok until Settings Center is closed.

Cheers,

Ed

Hi Ann,

Bit of a long shot, but try the following.

Go into Settings Center with JAWS key+6.

expand Configure verbosity levels.

Press space on the level that JAWS is set to (enter will close you out of

If it isn't, uncheck it, and ok/apply your way out of the Settings Center

Arrowing line by line through documents, JAWS speaks numbers that must
mean something to someone. following the text, it might say,
"10 of 20"; and following the next line, "11 of 20", and so on. Then
randomly it will reset to "3 of 255".

In earlier versions of JAWS I turned off "UIA" something and those

turned off "outline indication", and the numbers are still there.
Any suggestions for getting rid of the stinkers?

Hello,
JAWS also has a braille study mode that one can activate when a

Thank you all for the advice.   I’ve downloaded the PDF  and will bookmark that HTML version.  I’ll also go look or the videos.    Scott Davert did an overview on Braille displays and IOS in  last year, but he was jumping between various displays, so I might get confused.  Glad to see FS had a guide specific to IOS on the site, but I’ll follow everyone’s advice and start with it on the laptop and JAWS.   So, so glad you all told me the tutorial is on the FS site, as I only got a Braille guide in the box and my Braille skills are definitely not good enough to make sense of that.

With gratitude,

Robin

There are also some training videos on their youtube channel. Also, there are some on ACB community events in their podcast section.

The way I got started was to try to use it with  my computer. This way I had Jaws as a backup to what I was reading on my display. Then I started learning the keys to perform things like alt f4 to close a window, control a to select all, control c to copy, etc and started using those. I’m not proficient with it, but I’m getting better.

After I learned some of that, I started using the scratchpad to take notes or to read txt files.

I don’t know about alternative training formats, but to start with you could begin using the scratch pad. It’s much like notepad on a laptop and that its capabilities are very limited. But it’s a good place to start for basic braille writing practice. The one upside to the website version of the manual is that the table of contents  contains  links to the various sections, like the one for the scratch pad, that can be clicked on to take you right to that section. This is what I did when learning to use the 14 cell before moving on to the 40 cell version.

Hi Ann,

Yes, you can, but someone else suggested to use laptop layout when using a desktop and this is maybe a better option, because you can use insert or capslock this way.

If you want to use capslock as the jaws key:

Go to settingscenter, press ctrl-shift-d for default settings and type:
jaws key
arrow down to Jaws key for dessktop layout
and change it with space to capslock.
