Hello, everyone.

I have been reading bits and pieces of info, but can’t seem to find a nice concise summary of the new Jaws annual home license that apparently is now available with the release of Jaws 2019.

Jaws 2019 is the last Jaws upgrade on my SMA, so I will need to do something to renew it at some point.

Up until now, I’ve renewed my Jaws Home SMA for a two-year period for $120.

If there now is a more economical way to do this, I’d certainly love to learn about it.

I think this is also an offer which would make it much less expensive for somebody who didn’t keep their SMA up-to-date to get current on Jaws. If, for example, somebody was still on Jaws 16 or even earlier they would have to pay several hundreds of Dollars to get current and then another $120 for the SMA. This way they can just subscribe for $90 a year and they are done. What I haven’t figured out yet is if this also applies for new Jaws users, e.g. if you don’t have Jaws at all, can you just pay $90 a year and download/use the latest version of Jaws and as long as you keep you rsubscription active then you can continue to do so? If so then this really is a good option for new Jaws users because instead of paying $900 or whatever Jaws costs + the cost of future SMA’s they would djust pay $90 a year. After 10 years you would have paid $900 which is I believe what Jaws Home costs, if you had bought it for $900 and then you would buy 5 SMA’s at $120/each you would have paid $1,500 after 10 years so if you are a new Jaws user then $90 a year really is a very reasonable price and who knows what happens in 5 or 6 let alpong 8 or 10 years, maybe Jaws won’t exist any more as such, maybe Microsoft buys them out and it gets merged with Narrator into Microsoft and becomes free, I certainly wouldn’t bet on Jaws being the leading screenreader in 10 years any more.

It sounds like it would be a bit more flexible since you don't have to fight with the activation as much if you use a lot of different computers, but otherwise it looks like a way to generate more revenue.  I just renewed my SMa, they will have a little while longer to wait for my extra revenue.

Hi again.

Wonder if any of you out there remember the speech synthesizer that worked with a sound card before Eloquence came out?  If I remember it was called Text Assist, and it sounded like a DecTalk.  I used it a little, but I had a DecTalk Express, so I didn’t need it.

Just curious.

As I said before, downloading and installing Jaws 2019 does not make Jaws 2018 go away and I think you will quickly realize that Jaws 2019 is already superior to the latest built of Jaws 2018, but you can always sfall back to Jaws 2018 if something isn’t working correctly in 2019.

Kevin,

The last Beta version of Jaws 2019 which became the public release was Jaws 2019.1810.64. If you have a .42 at the end of your version number if you check it in Jaws Menu > About then you are not on the current release and you should download it from the FS website and install over top of your current beta 2 version. Remember you do have to now license Jaws 2019 which requires 1 SMA.

JAWS for Windows 1.21, serial number 1600.

Re: What is your first version of Jaws

I chose IMB Screanreadder for Dos in 1991 because of its separate numeric keyboard.

I switched to JFD and Jaws for Windows in 1996. I had a version 0.76, or possibly 1.76, timed demo, probably with Windows 3.1 and 3.11. The windows version came on 3 floppies.

For a long time you could load the DOS version prior to windows to be able to troubleshoot when windows crashed.

Hey Ward,

For me it was also Jaws for DOS back in September or October of 1989.
I then had Jaws for Windows from the first release in the early 90's with Windows 3.1, then 3.11 and of course with Windows 95, 98 and 98SE things really started getting more serious.
Sounds like we have most of these young guys on the list beat, but let's see, what is your Jaws serial number? I have serial number 1056 and that has been my serial number for the last almost 30 years.

Subject: Need Details On New Annual Jaws Home Subscription

Hello, everyone.

I have been reading bits and pieces of info, but can’t seem to find a nice concise summary of the new Jaws annual home license that apparently is now available with the release of Jaws 2019.

Jaws 2019 is the last Jaws upgrade on my SMA, so I will need to do something to renew it at some point.

Up until now, I’ve renewed my Jaws Home SMA for a two-year period for $120.

If there now is a more economical way to do this, I’d certainly love to learn about it.

Dr.  Tom Behler from Michigan

Re: In JAWS 2019 how do I turn back on both the "tab" and "alt+tab" key sounds?

Mike B. <mike9902@...>

Hi Richard,

Try the following:
1. Open the Settings Center with the keystroke, Jaws key + 6, on the number row then press, control, shift + D, to open default all applications.
2. Navigate to, Keyboard closed, and press right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow to, General closed, and right arrow to open.
4. Down arrow to, Manage key labels..., and press the spacebar to open.  Note;  don't press enter , if you press enter it'll close the Settings Center.
5. Press the letter, T, and it'll take you to, Tab tab mute, now tab 1 time an you'll hear, toggle mute button, so press the spacebar to hear, Tab tab speak.
6. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, again tab to, Okay, press enter to save & close.
Take care.  Mike.  Go Rams!

Hi!

I like hearing the sounds “tab” and “alt+tab” when I press these keys so that I get that confirmation.  Apparently, in JAWS 2019 this functionality is defaulted to “off.”  How can I turn this back on?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,

I think it's the tab key you need to turn back on, then alt will speak when you press the combination.

Press JAWS key+6 to open the settings centre, press shift+control+d to load the defaults, and type key labels into the search box.

Arrow down to manage key labels, and go from there.  As I said, I think it's the tab key you need to enable.

Make sure you've OK-ED yourself out of the various dialogs when you've changed it.

Cheers,

Ed

Don,

Thanks, that worked and got me to where I could purchase. So, I’m set for two more years then I’ll go to the license choice as I believe the SMA will be phased out.

I did a search on the FS web site for SMA and the first item found was a way to enter your serial number to see if you were able to purchase a new SMA

Hello,

I believe I saw someone on this forum that stated they purchased a SMA for jaws online after the release of Jaws 2019. I went to the Freedom Scientific eStore and put in a search for that but only got choices for purchasing a license. Or buying Jaws outright.

Could someone post the link of where to go on the sight to make the purchase?

Thanks

Al

I don't remember the version number, but we have serial number 1411.  We go way back, I guess.

Thanks! It was already on calendar. I did the reset and the title of the appointment still doesn’t show up.

I’m also on Outlook 2016.  ‘ve looked around the settings and don’t particularly see anything that could allow this to happen.  The best recommendation I have to start with is to go to the View ribbon while in the calendar and try clicking on the following two items:

_ - Click the first button on the View ribbon, called Change View and select the “Calendar” button, which is the first one on my list of choices.

  • Maybe also try clicking on the Reset button, which is the third one from the left on the view ribbon.

Hello,

I’m using Windows10 and Outlook 2016. For some reason any meeting that is on the calendar or just added, the subject doesn’t show up. It use to and I’m wondering if I made some change that eliminated the subject to show up. For emails I set it up to have the subject appear first. I don’t think would affect what is on the calendar. Any thoughts of what I could do to correct the problem?

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi again.

Wonder if any of you out there remember the speech synthesizer that worked with a sound card before Eloquence came out?  If I remember it was called Text Assist, and it sounded like a DecTalk.  I used it a little, but I had a DecTalk Express, so I didn’t need it.

Just curious.
