Has anyone suggested trying a different keyboard to sort out if it is a hardware issue?

Hi Alison!
Here are a couple of additional things to consider. One, sometimes there can be some sort of setting within the JAWS Keyboard Manager (under JAWS Utilities) that can cause this problem. Maybe setting it back to its defaults should be
tried. I do not know exactly how to do this, but I know it can be done pretty easily! Another idea is to take a look at any weird, inadvertent keyboard settings that you may have set in your computer itself. Sometimes, these are called “hot keys.” Sometimes,
they are found wherever you might re-define function key operations. In Windows 7, you could find the right place under Control Panel. For Windows 10, I am not sure where to look since I myself am new to it.
HTH,
Richard
Thanks for the suggestion; I will give it a try.
Alison
Hi Alison,
I have not followed this thread from the beginning, but have read the last few posts. I’m not sure if this idea has been suggested, but if you have not done so, try holding down the stuck key for 5 seconds. You
may need to do this several times. In the past, this has unstuck a key for me. HTH.
Terrie Terlau
I guess I could try unloading Jaws and re-loading, although I have tried disabling and re-enabling it. Re-starting the computer doesn’t stop it from happening.
Alison
Guess
In addition to the ideas which have been suggested. unload and reload JFW. Also restart the computer.
My personal opinion for what it is worth, I do not think that your problem has anything to do with the Sticky Key function. In order for
the Sticky Key function to be activated using the keyboard, either the left or right shift key needs to be tapped rapidly 5 times in succession.

Unfortunately, Richard, re-starting doesn’t seem to solve my problem but I suspect you are right that it is something to do with sticky-keys functionality; it definitely isn’t anything wrong with
the keyboard itself.
But I se a suggestion about trying to jiggle the alternative alt key, so will try this the next time it happens.
Interestingly enough, it never happens when I am using the internet.
Alison
Hi Alison!
About your issue with keys seemingly being stuck down, I have seen this before as well. Most often, it is either or both of the alt and windows keys. I have never figured out how or why this happens. For me,
it is not a mechanical thing, like the keys physically being stuck down due to something like a crumb. I think it has something to do with something like “sticky keys.” I have a vague recollection that a certain combination of keystrokes in Windows causes
keys to act like they are always pressed down. I do not know what that combination is. But, apparently one can trigger this without knowing or intending to do so. For me, the problem goes away after a restart.
HTH,
Richard
The keys don’t actually get stuck down but behave as though they are. We have tried cleaning them.
I had a feeling that this was discussed before Christmas and I wasn’t alone with this issue where the computer behaves as though the alt key or windows key is still depressed.
I think I will take Ed’s advice and wait till the summer before upgrading Jaws and take advantage of Sight and Sound’s Summer Deal as it looks as if it will cost me around £350 to upgrade from
Jaws 18 to the current version.
Alison
First, the problem with the keys acting like they are jammed down may not be a Jaws issue, so no one should say one way or the other if that will solve your problem.
Maybe you could specify what you have tried already to resolve that issue.
The current version is Jaws 2020, so if you have just Jaws 18, you would need 2018, 2019 and 2020, but since you get a little better deal doing them in groups of two, you may want to do through
2021.
Or, you could go with the subscription model at $90 per year and jump right into the 2020 version.
You'll have to do the math to see which makes the most sense in your situation.

I was given a free migration from Window-eyes to Jaws 18 but would now like to upgrade. I see the price varies dependent upon how many upgrades you want. How many would I need to have the current
version? Would the current version get rid of this problem I am having with the alt and windows key appearing as jammed down?

HI Brian,
Thanks so much! He doesn't have the technical knowledge to do so and I don't have the time to learn at the moment, though I've run across quite a few clients who need this service and feel it very well may be worth it to carve out some time to do so.
Thanks again,

Hello Alison:
fsince I wrote my response to your email, for no
apparent reason, when I pressed the ESC key to get out of an email message, JAWS
said "Invisible Cursor". I unloaded and restarted JAWS and the problem went away
because, when I pressed the ESC key, I was able to get out of the email message.
I will not say that this solution will solve your problem, but, it is worth a
try.

First, the problem with the keys acting like they are jammed down may not be a Jaws issue, so no one should say one way or the other if that will solve your problem. Maybe you could specify what you have tried already to resolve that issue. The current version is Jaws 2020, so if you have just Jaws 18, you would need 2018, 2019 and 2020, but since you get a little better deal doing them in groups of two, you may want to do through 2021. Or, you could go with the subscription model at $90 per year and jump right into the 2020 version. You'll have to do the math to see which makes the most sense in your situation. HTH,

Hey, Alison.
Do you have another screen reader on board? If so, do you have sticky keys with that screen reader as well?

In addition to the ideas which have
been suggested. unload and reload JFW. Also restart the
computer.
My personal opinion for what it is worth, I do not
think that your problem has anything to do with the Sticky Key function. In
order for the Sticky Key function to be activated using the keyboard, either the
left or right shift key needs to be tapped rapidly 5 times in
succession.

Thanks! Will this resolve the edit box issue? Hi all, Someone reported on JFW list (hosted on Groups.IO) that the user cannot interact with certain web content displayed in Edge 79 beta, along with a thread on Win10 forum about inability to interact with web content shown in Edge with other screen readers. This issue can be traced to the fact that, in Edge 79 (upcoming stable version), UI Automation is enabled (several reports were sent to Microsoft about this issue). Unfortunately, as an NVDA core developer (not me) notes, UIA implementation in Chromium-based web browsers (including Edge) isn’t solid yet. To work around this for now, you need to disable UIA support in Edge and other Chromium-based web browsers (if your browser exposes this option). To do so in Edge 79: - Start new Microsoft Edge (not the old one).
- From address omnibox (Alt+D), type “edge://flags” (without quotes and as exactly as shown) and press Enter.
- Type “UI Automation” into “search flags” and press Tab to move through resulting content (no, DO NOT PRESS ENTER AFTER TYPING FLAGS!).
- Go to “Native UI Automation” combo box and select “disabled”.
- Press Tab to go to “Restart” button and click it.
Screen reader specifics: - Narrator: supports native UI Automation
- JAWS: works better with native UI Automation off
- NVDA: works better with UI Automation off and a fix is being developed
- Other screen readers: contact vendors
Cheers, Joseph

function key row on keyboard stopped working
With Windows 10, Jaws 2020 and an HP laptop I have a Magic keyboard attached thru a hub. The function keys and all other top row of keys have stopped responding. The board has some years on it. I assume it has worn out. Just checking to
see iif there might be something fixable that I don’t know about.

Good afternoon list,
As the subject says, I'm looking to connect with Jackie McBride. If she could contact me, or if anyone has her contact info, I'd really appreciate a chat with her.
Thanks so much,
Sarah
