Yes, I was a long time WP user.  I really liked it.  Like other things, the world began to march to the Microsoft drum so I had to get in step.

I did read some time ago where Word does not have an equal to WP in regard to speech access to reveal code.

Ed,

I just did a web search about reveal codes and there is a known problem in the versions of Word above 2016 build 1701 or something like that.  I suspect you are on 2016 build 1803 or 1809.

This came from a Microsoft Community page that was updated December 28, 2018.

Did you used to use Word Perfect when Reveal Codes were easy to access?

They have never been easy to get to with Word and I’m not sure if they have been really accessible with a screen reader.  My sighted wife uses them some times, but she is a relatively new convert to Word from Word Perfect.

There is still a “clear formatting” option on the Styles drop-down, but I’m not sure that will do what you are hunting for.

You can go into the options on the File menu and turn on all the various markers so you wil hear space and tab and such everywhere, but that would be a royal pain.

Clear formatting, as I just found with a quick test, will get rid of bold, underline, etc.  It will not remove tabs.  But, you can do that with find and replace.

To clear formatting, select all the text you want to remove the formatting and tap the following keys one after the other, not together.  Alt, h, l, c.

To use find and replace for tabs, press control+h (that brings up find and replace) type ^t in the find box, tab to replace and put a single space in if you want so as to avoid ending up with words smashed together with no spaces and hit alt+a.

Jaws willl tell you how many were replaced.

If you want to get rid of hard returns, the symbol to use is ^p.

The ^ is the capital 6, on the number row if you didn’t know that.  And the t or p for tab and hard return are lower case.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Hi,

I really would like to know how I can act on a notification in Action Centre.

I get these notifications from Google, headlines and articles such as the below (taken from Jaws speech History) after I press Win Key + A:

Notifications from Google Chrome

(5 other new notifications) 9:28 PM • www.facebook.com

Very rarely if I press enter on one of these it actually opens Chrome, my default browser, and the article displays. But typically pressing either spacebar or enter on any of these will just clear it.

For example, I pressed the spacebar on the first notification about the new game console and Jaws says "Clear All, if I do a say line it seems I am now on the Clear All button and if I check back the notification about the game consoles is gone and if I actually press spacebar or enter when I am on that Clear All button all notifications are cleared.

Isn't there a way to activate these items so it goes to the article on the CNET, Tech Radar or whatever website that is mentioned?

Thanks,

Sieghard

If you ever end up running out of authorizations (you are strictly speaking not loosing your license, but an authorization) you can simply contact Vispero and request to have an authorization added.

That would be the other end of the spectrum from something like Freshbooks, SAP is typically meant for large companies and is beyond what a smaller single retail store needs and while I haven't checked I assume that would include not only the features of the system and how it needs to be customized but also the cost.

I don't know of any way to accomplish the showing of formatting as you're describing it.   However, if your goal is to remove all formatting like bold, italics, underlining or any combination thereof you can do that in the Home Tab, Font Group, with the Clear All Formatting button.   ALT+H,E

You do have to have done a Select All (CTRL+A) or have selected the block of text where you want the formatting to be removed before doing so.

That does not meet my requirements for an advanced point of sale system, it's more of an invoicing/accounting system for people with a very limited requirement for a few products or services.
In the approx. 12 years since I have had my current point of sale system we have accumulated over 10,000 customers in the database, there are about 10,000 active and over 20,000 inactive items in the database and of course there is the sales history for all these customers many of which are local and come in on a very regular bases. Furthermore there are thousands of purchase orders when we receive shipments, thousands of pictures which are associated with the products and my system needs to be capable to link to our website and sync our online database/store to the physical store.

Sieghard

Sieghard, this is only a suggestion, but I heard of a website called
FreshBooks.com but aren't sure how screen reader friendly it is with
JAWS. but since it's web based, maybe it's worth checking out?

Hello Jessica,

I would be very curious what your need/requirement for a point of sale
system is. I don't use Quickbooks, but a different system, but it's an
older end of life product and I am very much looking for a replacement
as well. I started a correspondence with Vispero about this since many
of the major and affordable POS systems which are available have many
accessibility challenges or are outright inaccessible. Eric Damery
replied to me and said that they definitely are aware that people out
there are needing a good accessible solution, hopefully this
conversation will continue now that the holidays are over and while it
may take a while I am hopeful that something will come of it.
In the meantime I'd love to hear from anybody who run a retail business
or work at one where they may need to use a point of sale system. I
think one of the issues is that if I look at a particular solution and
approach the company I may be the only blind person they have ever had
contact them in which case they may not take my request too serious.
Anybody who wants to contact me can do so off-list if they want and
email me at sieghard@live.ca, maybe if I get a few replies I'll start a
group since I don't think one exists, a combined voice can always shout
louder than just one alone.

Regards,
Sieghard

How well does it work?

Thanks,

Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>

I now some people are using the Square system. Sadly now, the one with a cash register and such is using an Android tablet. It used to use an iPad.
I now the app on the iPhone/iPad is accessible, or at least was accessible a couple of years ago.

Some folks in the Business Enterprise program use it.

That is about all I know.
