It's been a long morning and I'm probably missing something obvious, but using the link in the post, I'm not finding a way of downloading DuckDuckGo as a browser on Windows 10 Pro with JAWS 2020.
Google Chrome is my default browser. Am I correct that if, I want to make Chrome more private, I should get the DuckDuckGo Chrome extension? And it's at the Chrome store? And I don't need an extension for DuckDuckGo as a browser?
Any help straightening me out will be greatly appreciated.

It's up to 78.0.2, and it's real broke even on JAWS 2020. Doesn't work any better with NVDA or Narrator, so I'm not all-fired sure it's a JAWS problem.

Mozilla apparently had a twitter back and forth trying to reproduce this bug and it was a tricky one to both find and solve. I guess we wait for next update, which with FF…should be soon.

For what it’s worth, I have JAWS 2020 and I have stopped using Firefox for the most part because it crashes frequently. I spoke with tech support at Freedom Scientific who told me they are well aware of it.

Hey folks. Yes, I know JAWS 2018 is behind the curve, now, and that an upgrade would be beneficial. However, I’m not in a position to upgrade at this time. At the risk of running a huge struggle to continue using outdated software, I would like to know if anybody has any ideas of configuration settings that might make Firefox less crashy using this screen-reader. I know its’ an issue between interaction with JAWS and firefox and, frankly, always has been since the advent of Quantum. I tested this with nVDA (2019.3 and 2020.1) and it’s a lot less crashy. In fact I have failed to make Firefox crash even once using this other screen-reader. I know some users of JAWS 2020 have reported crashes, too, but I’m unable to test that currently and at a guess, newer versions of JFW should probably work better as well as NVDA. Anyway, since I’m not looking to downgrade firefox and not quite ready to either upgrade or give up JFW for the web browsing experience, in part because it works so nicely with my Focus braille display, just wondering if there are any flags/options I can alter in about:preferences or about:config (firefox’s “hidden” advanced settings page containing literally thousands of configurable options) that might help me have a smoother experience. Right now, since FF updated to 78.0.1 a week or two ago, everything from wikipedia pages to my old wisp’s webmail is crashing tabs. This only happens when jFW is running.
NB: I’m aware of other browsers and use them, so no need to suggest just switching browsers. Thanks!!
I’m not having the problems with nVDA though; that’s a strange thing because you aren’t the first person to say it’s also crashy with the other screen reader – but this is only happening with jFW on my end. My laptop only has nVDA and I’ts a much slower/less powerful system than the desktop, but new FF seems pretty stable there.

According to the Zoom Help Center, alt+f2 is the keyboard command to switch to Gallery View in a video meeting.
Page up or down apparently shows the previous or next 25 videos in gallery view, or something like that. Since I’m blind, I don’t bother with this.
You may need to reach out either to zoom support or FS.

Hi. I can answer a couple of your questions.
First, you get to the participant list by pressing alt-U. You have to tab around until you get to the list of names; then you can arrow up and down. This is somewhat buggy. They claim they’re going to fix it so that every time you get into the participant list you’ll be put in the list of names by default, but they haven’t fixed it yet.
To chat with a participant, you have to open the chat panel. You do this by pressing alt-H. That opens the chat panel. You then tab around until you find the names of participants and press enter on the name of the person you want to chat with. By default it’s set to send a chat to everyone.

I am taking part in a class at church via Zoom. I know how to join a meeting and how to mute and unmute my microphone, but there are a few things I am having problems with. First, when you join a meeting, how do you get to the Gallery view using JAWS? Also, when I get to the list of participants JAWS won’t read the list whenever I arrow up and down. Also, I know there is a spot where it says, “Find a participant.” I assume you enter the person’s name and then the person’s name will show. But if you want to send a message to that participant, how do you do it? Whenever I find the “Find Participant,” link and enter the person’s name, when I tab again it just gives me the option to either clear the search or cancel. So what does this mean?

In Windows, ever since I can remember, the last sound device plugged into
the computer becomes the default.
Typically this refers to USB devices,
When the last device is removed, the default sound device before that should
return to the default position.
Right now I can't tell you why Jaws is not co-operating.

Yes, I have speakers into my sound blaster card and headphones into my on
board Realtek audio. Today, I plugged in my camera for a Zoom meeting.
Jaws stopped speaking through sound blaster and tried speaking through the
speaker built in to my camera. It was too quiet to hear, but fortunately,
narrator was loud enough to hear through the small camera speaker.
I had to go to windows 10 sound settings and switch the focus back to the
sound blaster card, and all audio came through fine.
I still have the sound blaster card checked in Jaws, which should mean that
all Jaws audio comes through it, even when a different audio output is
selected in windows 10 settings.
I would like to figure out how to make this work properly.

10 makes this the active sound output device, effectively turning off Jaws

As for automatic updates: yes, it is advised to keep this enabled. In the
past, people gave conflicting advice in regards to keeping automatic updates
on or off, mainly because of concern that you may find yourself upgraded to
more recent Windows 10 release (termed "feature updates"). Times have
changed since then - Microsoft will not install new Windows 10 feature
updates (releases) unless your system (hardware and software) is deemed
compatible with the new update.
Although the following will not directly address automatic updates question
posed, it provides a short overview on what is happening with feature

Audigy Fx from Creative Labs off of Amazon for around $40. It is an internal card. To install in windows 10 you need to download the appropriate software from Creative Labs, the cd in the box does not work for windows 10.

Yes, I have speakers into my sound blaster card and headphones into my on board Realtek audio. Today, I plugged in my camera for a Zoom meeting. Jaws stopped speaking through sound blaster and tried speaking through the speaker built in to my camera. It was too quiet to hear, but fortunately, narrator was loud enough to hear through the small camera speaker.
I had to go to windows 10 sound settings and switch the focus back to the sound blaster card, and all audio came through fine.
I still have the sound blaster card checked in Jaws, which should mean that all Jaws audio comes through it, even when a different audio output is selected in windows 10 settings.
I would like to figure out how to make this work properly.

I am using latest Jaws 2020 and windows 10. I have my sound blaster card selected in Jaws, but when I go to sound settings in windows and change to a different sound card, I lose Jaws speech.
I thought if I specifically selected the sound blaster card in Jaws, and not the windows default sound, Jaws would always speak through the sound blaster card, regardless of selection in windows 10 sound settings.
I am trying to route Jaws to the sound blaster card and other sounds to the built in realtek sound card.

Also, when I plug in any new sound output device, such as a camera, windows

Hi. I can answer a couple of your questions.
First, you get to the participant list by pressing alt-U. You have to tab around until you get to the list of names; then you can arrow up and down. This is somewhat buggy. They claim they’re going to fix it so that every time you get into the participant list you’ll be put in the list of names by default, but they haven’t fixed it yet.
To chat with a participant, you have to open the chat panel. You do this by pressing alt-H. That opens the chat panel. You then tab around until you find the names of participants and press enter on the name of the person you want to chat with. By default it’s set to send a chat to everyone.

1. Never, ever think about turning off the Windows Update service.
2. Realize, that with regard to Feature Updates which change the Version of Windows 10 that's running, they are not fully automatic in any meaningful sense anymore. You will be presented with the option to Download and install in the Windows Update Pane of Update & Security Settings. Unless you activate that link, the feature update will not apply. (Or at least it will not apply while the version that's on your machine remains in support. It's well-nigh impossible that one would not have triggered the download and install of the next feature update long before whatever one is using goes out of support 18 months after its introduction.)

Not easily anymore: although you can pause updates for up to five weeks, you can't delay feature updates for up to a year from Settings (this used to be case with Version 1909/November 2019 Update, not anymore since Version 2004/May 2020 Update).

The link provided in Settings/Time and Date/Region does not open the “actual” date and time Control Panel applet – it opens an overview page, not the dialog to change date and time.
This is one of those instances where I wish Microsoft would just move everything to Settings, but that won’t happen for a long time.

Region subcategory does not let you change date – rather, it controls how certain things are displayed depending on where you live (commonly called a “locale”).
To change date and time manually (and I’ll introduce you to shorthands):
- Open Settings (Windows+I).
- Go to Time and Date/Date and Time (notice the shorthand; basically, you would select the first item, then select the next item).
- Turn off “Set time automatically".
- Click (select) “Set the date and time manually".
- From “Change date and time” window, move through controls and select the actual month, date, year, hour, minute, and period (AM or PM).
- Click “Change” button.
Try pressing JAWS Key+F12 (or twice) to make sure what you set is kept. If it didn’t, as folks noted, this is a hardware issue.

With your date being over 3 years off it don't matter what time you set your computer to, you need to correct the date as well. Follow Joseph Lee's steps and choose, Region, instead of, Date and time, to change your date and time from there.

You can go to the windows settings, date and time settings.
If you have automatically adjust the time then as someone said, your battery may
be going out because it shouldn't slow down.
You can get into those settings and adjust it manually, but I just leave mine so
it syncs with the internet.
I also find it is easier to cope with settings if I put Jaws in Speech on Demand
and launch Narrator.
