If it isn't on the desktop, the shortcut key likely won't work. To create the shortcut do the following.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
hit windows+r and type shell:appsfolder and press enter Now, find your version of jaws, hit the applications key and choose create shortcut. windows will complain and ask if you would like to put the shortcut on the desktop instead. Do that and you're done. You can right click on your new shortcut and choose properties, in there you will find where to put the shortcut key. When you're in the edit box, hit the key combination you want and then tab to okay. Hope this helps. CH

Hey there, Madison, BZ here again, grin! There's another way to do this in
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
windows ten. 1. Hit windows key plus r which will bring up the run dialog. 2. Type shell:appsfolder and then press enter. This will bring up a list of all your applications. Down arrow until you hear jaws and then hit your applications key and go down until you hear create shortcut and then press enter. You'll get a message that will say something like do you want windows to create a shortcut anyway and then press enter. I'm doing the message off the top of my head so that's not the verbatim message you'll hear but this method will create the jaws item on your desktop. If you're not comfortable doing this and you need assistance, just let me know and I'll be happy to help you. BZ!

If the alt key things are the worst, try an external keyboard to make sure something weird isn't going on with the one on the laptop. Otherwise, you're going to have to get a newer version of jaws.

I have been off the grid for the past 33 hours. I am a long-long time user of Norton. Most of the time as a sighted person, but for at least the last 8 years as a fully blind user. Their software does a great job of protecting my PC from 'bad' things happening, and when they included a password manager in their product a few years ago, I remained a very happy and loyal customer. Their software is not accessible friendly, but live with it by having a sighted volunteer assist. I am not familiar with the function you are talking about, but will call Norton Help Desk and hopefully get a good, workable solution from them. Thanks again. Ken

If you want to mute Jaws entirely, you can do this by pressing Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S As soon as you press this key combination Jaws will be totally muted until you again press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S which restores full speech. As for the keyboard shortcut which didn't work to bring up Jaws, you should first go to your Jaws shortcut on the desktop, press Alt + Enter to bring up the properties and tab twice to check if somehow the keyboard shortcut you set was removed. If you hear the following: Shortcut key: Hot key Control + Alt + J To define the hotkey Type the keystroke combination. Then your keyboard shortcut is set, if so not sure why it didn't work, but as Brian suggested, maybe delete it and reassign it. Personally I prefer Control + Shift + J, somehow I find it easier to press that key combination than Control + Alt + J, but that is very subjective. Also keep in mind that reloading Jaws is not instant, when I just tried it it took about 7 or 8 seconds before Jaws started speaking after I pressed the keyboard shortcut. One alternative to bring up Jaws was already given, press Windows + R and type Jaws2021 (or whatever your version is), make sure you don't insert a space between Jaws and the version number, it has to be all without spaces. You can also press Windows Key + M, I often do it twice just to be sure, this minimizes all programs and takes me to the desktop. As long as Jaws is the only shortcut you have which starts with J you can then just press J and enter and Jaws should also start. Lastly, if you are using Windows 10, you should be able to simply press the Windows key to bring up the search box and type "JFW" which is the name of the program file, jfw.exe. Don't include the .exe, just type JFW and press enter, for me this also starts Jaws. This would, however, potentially be a problem on a machine with 2 or more Jaws versions since the application files are all called JFW.exe. I assume it would still work, but which version of Jaws you get is probably anybody's guess. But if as you say you only have 1 Jaws version on your computer this should also work and strictly by how many keys you have to press it is easier than Windows Key + R and typing Jaws2021 or Jaws2020. Hi. Found an accessible simple to use capture program. Called capture and made by a firm called text smith http://www.textsmith.com. You do need to create a free account. This is a simple image capture. Able to then click on the capture button, once you are in that window. Or part of it. Then click save, and then save to that. So that’s what I am was looking for. To capture screen shots inside windows server, where the print screen key not working inside hyper v, windows server. And even did try finding alt control – and alt control == for windows server. And still did not work. So did try that on my windows 10 host system. It is accessible with jaws and nvda. Thanks.

I guess this works as long as Jaws is the first thing which pops up when you press Windows Key and J. If it does and it's consistent then great, if not that is where typing JFW comes in handy.

Both methods once again also depend on whether you have just one version of Jaws installed because if not either method could potentially load the version of Jaws you don't want.

So I turned Jaws using insert f4. Well after the video was finished I tried to turn Jaws on using control alt j, but it didn't work, my Dad had to click on Jaws. Now I know I have the command set, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Any ideas? Is there any other way I can turn Jaws on myself? If Jaws isn't working then my Braille display doesn't work either (not sure if this is normal or not) so I don't even know where I am. I hardly ever turn Jaws off, but I'd still like to know why the command to turn it on doesn't work. Running Jaws 2018. Look forward to any suggestions anyone can provide!! Thanks Madison

Just a bit more about Full speech, speech on demand and speech muted:
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
As Jasmine pointed out, pressing Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S invokes Speech on Demand which limits what Jaws will speak and it is something braille display users often use because they want less speech, but still some speech. Re: Issues with Jaws ndwindows 10,
tele1974@...
I am a federal government employee, so downloading newer versions of jaws unfortunately isn’t an option for me. Are there any possible workaround or is this just something I’m going to have to deal with? Honestly the worst of the two issues is the alt plus other keystrokes not working. Does anyone know why this would be?

Jonathan,
Thank you for the suggestion. Not really sure where to find this, could you head me in the right direction?
So far, all other suggestions offered have not worked out.

Is there any chance that you could use your iCloud account with the directory services and calendaring features built into Outlook 2019? If Outlook can communicate directly with iCloud just like Macintosh Mail can communicate with exchange servers, you might be able to avoid the apple Outlook plugin.
