Alt+s, then f to add additional footnotes. Goto dialog to move between text and footnotes. Draft view in order to read everything with JAWS.

Have you updated it recently, and ran a full scan?
Sometimes malware will turn it off and you may not be aware that it is turned off.
Microsoft has some off-line scanners for download as well.

I don't have any advanced malware scanning software and I usually use Windows defender to scan my computer for viruses.

The VLC that I use just uses up and down arrows for volume, and left and right arrows for back and forth in the audio.

When I did that, it messed me up.
Obviously, I need to experiment more, but I know now what to do enough to get it working when/if needed.

Just be aware that, if you have a whole bunch of notes, arrowing up will put
you to the previous note, rather than the text, hence I follow the
control-home then control-end to reach the last bit past

I was not following the steps exactly for adding the second or third footnote, etc. I thought I should use control+end to get passed what I had written, but that messes it

Are you using alt+f4 and picking shut down?
If the answer to the two questions is yes, then you probably need to hold the power button after a minute or two of waiting
