If you do what you suggest for your "all mail folder", though, I think those messages get deleted not only in "all mail", but also in whatever additional folders they might be stored as well,

Each email has a checkbox. With JAWS, type 'x' to go from one email to the next and press spacebar to check the box. when you have checked everything you want to delete, press 'b' for button three

the update did not fix the issue, must use JFW12 in Eudora since when I hit control-d, for deleting any message in Eudora, which ever line the cursor is on, it is auto-read in

there's always a first time for everything *grin* but no, defragging should only speed up your hard drive and possibly free up space as well. It's something you should do every so often.
