In office 2007 or later, go to the reference tab on the upper ribbon, then press down arrow. Once you've pressed down arrow, tab over to word count.

That and uncheck the language detection option in Jaws. It causes more problems than anything. Not necessarily an issues with Jaws, but rather the lack of proper tagging.
