In the case of the gmail standard interface it said "menu" or some
such (I've switched back to basic html because I find that way easier
to deal with).

using the Jaws cursor and dealing with GMail's weird drop down buttons or
whatever jaws ccalls them.

You are correct in your assessment of the Select All check boxes. They don't work, because to use JAWS, we must use basic html. Basic html does not offer a way to select all and then delete the unread
