I've successfully achieved this with diskpart. Delete the existing partition
table first, then create a new one. Then format it with a file system (e.g.,
exfat).

Marty, if you're using Windows 7 you can create a desktop shortcut by
pressing the windows key that will bring up the search dialog box, type
in iTunes, press the application key or shift+f10, down

I got iTunes from the Apple site and also do not have an icon on the desktop. The check box for an icom on the desktop was checked by defult during the setup, but no icon.

When I installed iTunes it automatically created a desktop shortcut. Did you install the Windows Store version? If so I highly recommend you get rid of it and all its components and install the iTunes

volume as a whole? If the latter the windows mixer should be more than
enough and is plenty accessible.

Yes, actually, it is. Microsoft is not advertising this, but I've upgraded machines, the most recent about a month ago, from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using media created using the Media Creation Tool

Why do you not just run a Windows 10 installation from a USB stick and then start Narrator, you can set up Windows 10 perfectly independently this way, just wait a few minutes after the installation
