If you're referring to auto-startup, where File Explorer automatically appeared when you plugged in a thumb/jump/flash drive, that was discontinued as a behavior years ago.

Have little experience with NVDA. However I find Narrator to be more stable and reliable than JAWS. JAWS offers more functionality and works with more apps yet lacks the stability of Narrator.

Why do you want to highlight the text? Are you trying to copy or just highlight for the sake of appearance? I highly recommend doing any real editing in Microsoft Word.

I grew up with Jaws from pre Jaws 4.0 days. Prier to that it was a little known piece of software called window bridge. I miss it.

If you're just writing short notes or grocery lists, Notepad is the way to go but, yes, it will not maintain your formatting the way Wordpad will.
My advice is to try to learn as much using Wordpad
