I don't see why they wouldn't, but it's not something I ever tried when I was using Excell for eight hours a day. I'll try to sit down and play with it later.
In the meantime, can you use Jaws key

Hi, Brian. Using This PC is the only shortcut anyone needs to access a drive or folder. I find it much more convenient not to worry about if a folder is open or closed, as I do if I am in the tree

As for the question of “was it fixed”, Microsoft and Vispero says it is fixed but I’d put some salt into it just in case it shows up again (the issue was traced to Microsoft Installer

Yes, use the This PC icon, which can be put on the desktop. Then just arrow down to whatever device (or drive) you want to open. Then you don't need to open and close drives. Just press enter on the
