I don’t think it is related to compact view, as that is about the presentation of the messages list, but you can certainly turn it off to check. It’s on the View ribbon, under View settings,

well, a repair fixed the problem and I can now use the feature. it's kind of strange that it didn't work until now because I performed a repair a few times before for other issues.
