I agree, it's too annoying/confusing to hear different voices for
certain events, but there's no need to uninstall and reinstall.
to get JAWS to use one voice for everything, I'd suggest to check

Good work. Only caveat is that you'll need to carry this version of the scripts over whenever updating JAWS to a new major version.

I’m a long-time JAWS user, though certainly not an expert or programmer. I am totally blind. I need to upgrade both JAWS (currently running version 16 on Windows 8 computers) and get a new computer.

press insert+j to get the JAWS window.
press alt. press enter on the options menu to open it.
press enter on the basics submenu.
now you should be on
