I am using Office 2016, so sorry in advance if this doesn’t help. In Outlook 2016, you can’t TAB to the pane you describe, and instead, pressing F6 takes you there; hence, I am able to SHIFT+F6

Word 2013, windows 7: opened document not reading
Jaws 17.
When my student opens a document in the documents list, JAWS says "Document, message" and does not read the text. The text is on the screen but not accessible. Printview is on. sometimes

Yeah, I experience the same thing you describe, I would suggest you
change file associations by using explorer instead.
Find the file you want to change the association for, bring up the
context menu
