You don't say what operating system you are using but generally if it is Windows if you go to properties on your hard drive and tab over to tools you will find a check for errors item, some versions

that has always brought up an ad. The first time I pressed F5 it interrupted

Also, once your at the desktop all you need do is press windows x and you'll
get a menu. Programs and features will be listed on that.

In windows 7 at least I can type "add r" in the search bar and "Add or
Remove Programs" pops up.
