Wel, its for upgrading that they ask you always to pay, every few months, and then they always says on the site you don't have to upgrade if you don't want to, but just to ask for each upgrade

its working fine here. i installed the update from the other day and didn't have any problems either. just installed this this morning and its all running right as rain. using xp pro.

You don't actually have to pay for the self-hosted version of WordPress. You do have to pay for your hosting, but since you're making your website by hand, steph, you most likely already are anyway.
