Have you tried it with the virtual cursor turned off? I used to have to deal with a combo box on my online banking where I had to select the account I wanted to pay business taxes from and that combo box was doing nothing whether I tried enter or Alt + Down Arrow, but when I turned off the virtual cursor and tabbed to it I could easily select the account I wanted, tab out of it, turn the virtual cursor back on and complete filling out the form.

Should it also work with the virtual cursor? Of course it should, but if it can be done without then it may not be ideal, but it is also not inaccessible, just required a different technique.

Re: will the new jaws version work on windows 7

I don't think Vispero cares which version you use as long as you pay your subscription, many people still have Jaws 2021 or even Jaws 2020 on their computer and may occasionally use it for some reason and if what you say is true this means that once a new version comes out that is the only one they can use.

I believe that you have to pay a subscription for a newer version, I don't think from information gathered from this and other lists, that one can keep paying a subscription for an old version.
If this is incorrect, then all is good.

They don't need to support it, they've been there, done that.
Now they just need to let people use their screenreader on the old system.
But there's always the Jaws hack out there for anyone wanting to use Jaws on
their windows 7 or 8.
So FS not allowing folks to use the yearly subscription version on their old
windows is inviting people to discover the Jaws hack, which will run for
free, the only thing it does not do is jaws tandem.
FS did something similar, back in the old days of Open Book, they provided a
free slim version of Jaws called Connect Outloud.

What is perfectly fine about a version of Windows which is no longer
supported even with security updates? You could then say as well that
Windows XP or Windows 98 was a perfectly fine version of Windows.
When it comes to operating systems and other software there comes a time
when you just have to move on. I would say now that Windows 11 has already
been released, Windows 10 has been available for 6 years and it's coming up
to 2 years in January since Windows 7 stopped getting updates that time has
come and I don't blame Jaws that they stopped supporting Windows 7, there
are probably reasons for it beyond them having a chuckle and saying "let's
screw all the remaining Windows 7 users".

In my opinion:  It would be best to upgrade your windows version as soon as it is feasible, because:  Eventually, neither   versions of Jaws or windows will be supported, and it will be more difficult to obtain adequate technical support; if something should go wrong.  It happened to me regarding windows xp.  I was happy as a clam running windows xp;  Till something happened to the Jaws version I was running at the time.  I called Freedom Scientific technical support to fix my particular problem.  As soon as they heard the version of Windows and Jaws I was running, they said they weren’t able to assist me.  After I upgraded to Windows 10, things changed quick smart.  I found myself needing help from Microsoft technical support.  I got it immediately; and was up and running in no time.

Re: JAWS 2021: Focus Issues in Winamp's Playlist Window

Nermin

Hi Steve,

everything is off, except for the playlist window.

But after a while of cursoring up and down reasonably fast, I am thrown into the desktop for some odd reason.

I suspect this has something to do with script timing somewhere inside the Winamp scripts.

Downgrading to a previous version is not an option at this point.

Cursoring up and down slowly will prevent this strange behaviour, but it kicks in at some point sooner or later nonetheless.

Regards,

Nermin

As an alternative, you can use alt-escape.  I use this on my ElBraille, as there is no way to hold down the alt key and tab repeatedly.  Every time you press alt-escape you move to the next window.

Subject: JAWS 2021: Focus Issues in Winamp's Playlist Window

Hi all,

I am experiencing focus issues in Winamp after using the software for longer than 10 minutes or so.

A friend of mine is having the same issue with her device.

We're both on the most recent version of Windows 10 64 bit.

JAWS 2021 is unable to read out the tracks in a playlist using the cursor keys. However, NVDA and any JAWS version prior to 2021 and the latest 2022 are exhibiting the same odd behaviour.

Is there anything we can do to fix this?

I'd even try configuring scripts if I know where to look, or tweaking Winamp's own settings for better performance.

Regards,

Nermin

We don't have the annual subs in the UK, so I can't comment, but it is simply controlled by an activation key, so I bet it would work with older versions of JAWS.

Hi, Steve and list. Since the discussion has started on this list about whether or not Vispero will continue to sell annual licenses for JAWS 2021, which are backward compatible, now that JAWS 2022 has been released, I wrote the following letter to Eric Damery, Product Manager for JAWS with Vispero. I am awaiting his response, and will post it when, and if, I receive one.

Hello, Eric. I am subscribed to a group list on the Internet. A discussion has come up, and I would like clarification if Vispero will continue to sell renewed annual subscription licenses for JAWS 2021, now that JAWS 2022 is no longer compatible with Windows 7.

Many people still use Windows 7, and cannot upgrade to JAWS 2022. If JAWS annual subscription licenses are not backward compatible, so that Windows 7 users can continue to by annual licenses for JAWS 2021, until they can upgrade to Windows 10, this will force people to,

1. Give up JAWS for another screen reader, or, 2. Shell out a lot of money to buy a new computer system that is compatible with Windows 10, or Windows 11.

If people had enough money to pay for a new computer, they probably wouldn't have a problem buying JAWS. So, will Vispero continue to sell annual subscriptions for the older version (2021) of JAWS, or, when their year runs out, will they be forced to switch to another screen reader?

Thank you.

Hi,
I agree with everything said here.
There are countless resources available to get started using the newer windows versions. Windows versions that are no longer getting security updates should not be used on a daily basis - this is simply asking for all kinds of problems and you are risking any information that is on said machine, among a good number of programs and applications no longer supporting your, at this point, 11 year old operating system. Checking email, banking, even general, basic web browsing means that you are going to use a more outdated web browser and email client every day.
Perfectly good means secure, receiving regular updates pertaining to security fixes and patches. Perfectly good means compatibility with the applications you use on a daily basis, along with their updates which in and of themselves contain security fixes, bug fixes and improvements. Perfectly good means a user can feel safe, comfortable and secure using their operating system and the files therein. Perfectly good does not mean an operating system which, day by day, will become less and less secure - in an age where that is already being taken seriously on systems that are fully up to date. Windows 7 is 2 years on from being officially supported and updated. It is time to move on, and I thank freedom scientific for doing just that, which will bring more inevation and compatibility with things here and now, like Windows 11.

Tyler
