I apologize if this is off topic for this list, but I’m not sure where or who to ask. I would like to be in touch with anyone who currently uses the latest version of the Audacity software with JAWS. If things go as I am hoping, I may be using it for some recording. I need to know how accessible and operatable it is on a laptop computer with JAWS. I am looking for perhaps some tutorials or even classes online. If it is accessible with JAWS, I’d like to learn as much as I can about it.

I’m happy to go off list with people who use it or can lead me in the right direction. At this point, it needs to be that specific program, because I would be working or making recordings with others who are using it.

Generally it is not recommended for you to downgrade back from an original windows 11 to windows 10.
Windows 11 is quite stable now, a year into its launched. Perhaps you can describe what didn't work well on Windows 11.

Hey there Meow Meow!
Your name makes me smile! To turn off automatic updates in new versions of
Windows like Windows 10, which doesn't seem to have that parameter in the
Control Panel like other previous versions (That really makes me mad), you
actually have to create a registry key. If it's not already there, go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. create a new
key called "WindowsUpdate". within that key, create another key called AU.
Within that key, create a Dword value called NoAutoUpdate. Set that value
to 1. If you have Winaero Tweaker, which also helps, set the parameter of
Disable Windows Update to checked, and you should be good to go. It does
sound complicated, but it's definitely worth it if you don't wanna be
bothered with constant updates!

Hi Annabelle!

You woun't hear that from me! I've been the computer industry since
1980
and I have always felt that automatic updates are a very bad idea. The
problem with automatic updates is that you may get an update that does
bad thing to your computer, and while you might be able remove the
update, the automatic update feature will just put it back again. It is
always better to wait a while to see what others are saying about an
update and if the news isn't good, you just don't install it!

When the pdf comes up blank in Adobe, go to accessibility and change the reading order to left to right, top to bottom. That usually works for me and gives me the text, unless it is a graphic.

Someone who can access the web without a screen reader will have to tell
the list if they're having the same issue.
If they are, there is probably little help that Freedom Scientific can
provide.
The problem then first needs to be fixed with the browsers.
A screen reader can only be as good as the other software on the machine.

Yes, turning off automatic updates is a good thing.
I don't know if windows 10 or that newer one, LOL, allow one to select
which
updates can be installed through windows update, like we can in earlier
windows.

You could try that. But be sure to install it on an empty hard drive in case you have data you want to save on the one with Windows 11. And, if you can believe it, my sighted friend Markus (Yes, that's "Markus" with a "K", not a "C"), helped me to install Windows 10, with narrator! Isn't that amazing that you can install Windows using Narrator?

Awesome instructions!  Skim reading with JAWS will search for colors as well.

Hi Rahul,

I’m going to provide what I hope will help you locate blue text in your Word document. The instructions I’m providing were done on a system running Windows 10, Fusion 2020, and Word 2019 so if any of my steps differ from yours, it might be due to that. Also, when searching for colors, I’m assuming whoever marked the color in your document used the standard color blue and not some derivation thereof.

From the top of the Word document containing the blue text, do the following:

  1. Press ctrl + h to open the find and replace dialog.
  2. You should be located In the find what text box but you can press alt + n to move there and type an * which is a wildcard to find anything.
  3. Press alt + m to open the more options.
  4. Press alt + u to tick the box to use wildcards.
  5. Press alt + o to open the Format drop-down list and arrow to Font and press enter.
  6. Press alt + c to open the Font color drop-down box and down arrow until you hear Standard colors and then right arrow to blue and press enter.
  7. Tab to the Ok button and press enter.
  8. Press alt + f to initiate the find next and you should be taken to the first occurrence of blue text in your document.
  9. Press esc to close the find and replace dialog so you can repeatedly press shift + F4 to navigate to the next occurrences of blue text within the document.

I hope this helps but write back if the steps are confusing, don’t work, or if you have more questions.

Hi,

I use Word 16, JAWS 2021, Win 10.

I would like to be able to isolate, in a word document, all the text that is in blue. That is the text that I need to study. I am not able to do this.

I have created a skim reading rule with blue is the text colour and white as the background colour. JAWS keeps ticking on pressing control+caps+down arrow after creating the rule. But does not read out any text. It finally says 'no matches found'. I know for a fact that there is some blue text in the document. Can someone help, please?

Yes, turning off automatic updates is a good thing.
I don't know if windows 10 or that newer one, LOL, allow one to select which

Hi Annabelle!

You woun't hear that from me! I've been the computer industry since 1980
and I have always felt that automatic updates are a very bad idea. The
problem with automatic updates is that you may get an update that does
bad thing to your computer, and while you might be able remove the
update, the automatic update feature will just put it back again. It is
always better to wait a while to see what others are saying about an
update and if the news isn't good, you just don't install it!

As I understand it, JAWS is mine to keep, even if I don't renew the SMA,
but eventually the software won't work as Windows and applications keep
progressing. Like you, I like the idea of owning my copy, even if it
becomes outdated if I don't renew the SMA. The annual license is great
for removing the barrier of entry for new JAWS users, but feels like a
fleeting thing that you lose if you cannot afford the annual license one
year.

If your last SMA was 2002, you may not be able to switch base to even a
professional SMA at this point. You are probably best to call FS Sales
and ask about your situation.

I purchased my SMA with a college trust fund back in 2002, as I was going
to school back then. The SMA was a "Professional" license. I want to try
to change my recent home annual license to a perpetual license, but I'm
not sure how much it would cost to upgrade from one license to another.
Am I right when I hear that a perpetual license never expires?

Only simple idea I have is make sure the browser is maximized using alt+
space and x.

I've noticed the same thing; my guess, off the top of my head, is that something has chhanged with the 2-chromium based browsers.

The question is what; and the work around or fix.

Will be interested in the feedback of others on this.

Hi,

In my work laptop, Lenovo Thinkpad i5 with windows 10, and JAWS 2022.22.06.9 JAWS is loosing focus in our CRM internal systems constantly, but not limited to them.
For example, I'm doing something on SalesForce and then I'm finding myself at the bottom of the webpage, while I was in the center...
My touchpad is turned of.
This happened to me in any page.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Afik
