Here's a thought, and this is only a theory. Maybe after a certain amount of time has elapsed, say six months for example, JAWS figures that you don't want to update or upgrade and stops notifying you. Or it could be that after you have declined the update/upgrade a certain number of times, again it stops notifying you.

Just an idea...

Have you tried to stop JAWS after your startup has finished and then restarting again? I'd be curious to know if you then get the update window. There is some possibility that at startup, JAWS is trying to get to the information but cannot because the Internet connection is not yet fully active.

You must select yes or JAWS can't tell you if you have an update. Then if you have an update you can choose to install it or not.

Hello back,

in the jaws help menu when I activate the check for jaws updates, I only get
the question from the freedom scientific app asking me if I want to let this
app make changes to my computer and I can only select yes or no. Since I am
not sure at this time what this freedom scientific app will exactly do to my
laptop if I select yes, I for now instead select no.

In the jaws help menu, when you activate this app check for updates, I
thought a jaws user gets a list of all the current updates of jaws that are
available, giving the jaws user the option to select from this list the
particular jaws update they want to download?

Kindest regards,

Hank

Hi Annabelle,
"Eloq.sbl" works for me, I've edited it many years back to read Arabic
in a way I understand on the fly and real quick without having to
change the tts voice to anything other than eloquence. But I don't use
the user data directory.
Instead I replace it with the default one in the:
"C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\20xx\SETTINGS\eloq.sbl"
replace the "xx" with 21 in your case and open the folder as:
"C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2021\SETTINGS\"
Paste the file and replace it following the prompts, that would do it.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
Is "Eloq.sbl" still applicable in later versions of JAWS like JAWS 2021? The
reason why I'm asking this is because I want to add some characters that
JAWS seems to ignore when I type them. Particularly things like smileys and
characters of foreign languages like Japanese, Russian, Hebrew, and Greek.
By the way, what's the difference between "Eloq.sbl", "Eloqmain.dct", and
"Eloquence.vpf"?

Hi everyone!

I'm curious if anyone has noticed this apparent bug that for me has been
there for quite a while. I copied this from an email I just sent to
Freedom Scientific.

While visiting the Walmart web site at
https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2F&data=05%7C01%7C%7C7522f5436d1d47841b6408da5acab253%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637922123864891032%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=gbC5gpzCRgFpTavTSZeN2LP%2BAJaTZmCJPePHi9z%2B%2BVE%3D&reserved=0
whenever I'd use the form field list (insert+F5) or the links list
(insert+F7) JAWS reads lines from the about JAWS dialog I viewed earlier
before it
reads from the list I called up. See the speech history below, it is
from just after pressing insert+F5.

--- speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
Walmart.com | Save Money. Live Better - Profile 1 - Microsoft Edge
Select a Form Field dialog
--- end ---

To be honest JAWS frequently reads lines from screens that were closed a
while ago. It's like JAWS does not completely clear the speech buffer
after it has said something thus leaving some garbage behind to be
unnecessarily read again and again.

Here's another example, this one was from visiting amazon.com and
calling up the JAWS find dialog.

---speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
JAWS Find dialog
Find what: edit combo
--- end ---

You can see that same line from the about JAWS dialog being read yet
again. And again this dialog was closed hours ago.

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

List Admin

I got a response from Freedom Scientific and all they said was that they couldn't reproduce what I was seeing so as far as they're concerned, the problem is with my system and not with JAWS. Honestly I get that response from them all the time. It's gotten to the point that I sometimes wonder why I even bother contacting their tech support. To me it seems like if it isn't something they want to deal with, they just blame it on the users system and close the case.

whenever I'd use the form field list (insert+F5) or the links list (insert+F7) JAWS reads lines from the about JAWS dialog I viewed earlier before it
reads from the list I called up. See the speech history below, it is from just after pressing insert+F5.

--- speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
Walmart.com | Save Money. Live Better - Profile 1 - Microsoft Edge
Select a Form Field dialog
--- end ---

To be honest JAWS frequently reads lines from screens that were closed a while ago. It's like JAWS does not completely clear the speech buffer after it has said something thus leaving some garbage behind to be unnecessarily read again and again.

Here's another example, this one was from visiting amazon.com and calling up the JAWS find dialog.

---speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
JAWS Find dialog
Find what: edit combo
--- end ---

You can see that same line from the about JAWS dialog being read yet again. And again this dialog was closed hours ago.

Yeah.
The righ click menu is convenient for that. Thankfully it isn't your only recourse (see my previous message).
Hopefully either JAWS or Firefox will fix this in an update. As it seems fine with nVDA it would seem that the onus is more on the JAWS side of things, though I don't know what could have caused this to happen.

notice odd with 102, but since my normal interaction is to use the

extremely frustrating.

I can't even use jaws' "route PC to jaws" command and then the

Hi, again, Morey. I gave you the wrong information in my last message. It is Group by, not Sort By that you must click on to get Date as your Group By criteria. Sorry for the misinformation.

Hi, Morey. Somehow the folder in question is now being sorted by some other criteria than by date, perhaps details, list, or tiles. You need to go into the Sort By menu, and reselect date as your sorting criteria. This can be accomplished by unselecting all files in the folder, then right click the folder with the folder open, arrow down to Sort By, and choose Date, and press ENTER.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
Is "Eloq.sbl" still applicable in later versions of JAWS like JAWS 2021? The reason why I'm asking this is because I want to add some characters that JAWS seems to ignore when I type them. Particularly things like smileys and characters of foreign languages like Japanese, Russian, Hebrew, and Greek. By the way, what's the difference between "Eloq.sbl", "Eloqmain.dct", and "Eloquence.vpf"?

I use FireFox 91.11.0ESR 32 bit in my windows 64 and it works well for
everything.
I think the start to this thread mentions youtube.
I keep my youtube set to not play videos automatically, and I wait a minute
before using the letter B to find the play button, because that allows time
for an ad to play out before starting the video.
I usually do alt D while I'm waiting and copy the URL, so if I get
interrupted with a commercial, I close the window with control W and paste
the URL into Pontes downloader.
Well, if the URL is already in the clipboard, it will get loaded when I open
Pontes.

There were times when it's been a bit slow to load pages, which I think
actually has a lot to do witht eh screen-reader trying to load things into a
virtual buffer.
Can't have a huge number of tabs open at once compared with chromium
browsers.
But Firefox is way, way better for privacy than anything chromium. And as my
friend, a much more knowledgeable coder/developer than i will ever be,
explained to me the otehr day, the way chrome and some of its chromium
derivatives work will soon stop ad-blockers from working. That is
inttolerable for me, so, I expect I'll be leaning more heavily on Firefox
even than I am now, and just using chrome for youtube and other google
products, where it seems, unsurprisingly, to be way m ore efficient.
