I use FireFox 91.11.0ESR 32 bit in my windows 64 and it works well for
everything.
I think the start to this thread mentions youtube.
I keep my youtube set to not play videos automatically, and I wait a minute
before using the letter B to find the play button, because that allows time
for an ad to play out before starting the video.
I usually do alt D while I'm waiting and copy the URL, so if I get
interrupted with a commercial, I close the window with control W and paste
the URL into Pontes downloader.
Well, if the URL is already in the clipboard, it will get loaded when I open
Pontes.

Right now, I'd say it is a don't download. The applications key

I'm using Firefox 102.0, 6b bit, as I type this, running a rather old version of JAWS, and it's working great.
So if something is broken, perhaps it's a recent JAWS update.

moderated JAWS speaking lines from previous screens

Gene Warner

Hi everyone!

I'm curious if anyone has noticed this apparent bug that for me has been there for quite a while. I copied this from an email I just sent to Freedom Scientific.

While visiting the Walmart web site at
www.walmart.com
whenever I'd use the form field list (insert+F5) or the links list (insert+F7) JAWS reads lines from the about JAWS dialog I viewed earlier before it
reads from the list I called up. See the speech history below, it is from just after pressing insert+F5.

--- speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
Walmart.com | Save Money. Live Better - Profile 1 - Microsoft Edge
Select a Form Field dialog
---  end ---

To be honest JAWS frequently reads lines from screens that were closed a while ago. It's like JAWS does not completely clear the speech buffer after it has said something thus leaving some garbage behind to be unnecessarily read again and again.

Here's another example, this one was from visiting amazon.com and calling up the JAWS find dialog.

---speech history ---
JAWS Version 2022.2206.9 ILM
JAWS Find dialog
Find what: edit combo
--- end ---

You can see that same line from the about JAWS dialog being read yet again. And again this dialog was closed hours ago.

Actually, by checking every verbosity element in the list, you can theoretically configure all verbosity levels to be identical, and you can certainly get the advanced verbosity to say "copied to clipboard". Select the Long messages radio button and OK out of the dialogue.

Is there a possibility that your SMA for Jaws has run Out? If it has perhaps that is why you no longer get the update notices. In fact, when I called them yesterday about my issue with the FS Cast bombing out in the middle of playing, I asked about my SMA and when I'm due to renew. If I update now or some time before July 28 I'll get a discount off the SMA price. These discounts are run during the ACB & NFB conventions so you might want to look into it. Technically I'm good to the end of the year but I'll get the updated SMA now for a little savings.

Hello back,

Thanks for all the helpful replies. But as I was mentioning earlier, even though I am still using the October or November 2021 release of jaws 2022, I am no longer getting that automatic pop up window when my jaws first starts up asking me if I want to yes or no update my jaws to a newer release of jaws 2022?

I was until about 3 or 4 days ago getting this automatic pop up window asking me if I yes or no wanted to update my jaws every time when my jaws first started up, but now I am not. This has got me stumped because as I was saying, I am still using the last October or November 2021 release of jaws 2022. I have already checked in jaws under basics, and the automatic notification of jaws updates is yes checked.

I am really hoping that maybe someone has an idea on how I can get back this automatic pop up window asking me if I want to yes or no update my jaws to a newer release of jaws 2022 when my jaws first starts up? Would be very, very appreciative for any help on this matter. Much, much thanks in advance for any possible help on this.

With kindest regards,

Hank

Hello:

" Wait, didn't I hear on the FSCast that they had changed that behavior so that you were notified of newer versions even if that newer version is a major version upgrade and not just a point version update?"

If you hold the JAWS Home Annual License, what you say is accurate. But if you are on the traditional licensing scheme, you will not automatically be notified when a major update comes out—usually around the end of October.

Not the same as firefox at all.  This is actually the first major problem I've had with firefox in several years of use.  Its main advantages are: easier to get to my bookmarks, menu interface more like windows and less like a dog's breakfast, and the facebook container plug-in, which is nice for keeping facebook from knowing every website you visit on the web.  If I had to use a chromium browser full-time, I'd use brave as much as I could.  I do use chrome for a few things, but they can't fix a poor design.

What I might suggest is that, when you get the notification of the latest FS podcast in JAWS, instead of clicking the play button, go to the FS podcast archives, find the latest episode, click the link, find the link inside, and right click it to download. If the file is sitting in your Downloads folder, and you press ENTER on the file to play it, it may play all the way through without any problems.

Hello All,

I updated my Jaws a few days ago and as usual, this morning when I turned on the computer I got the dialog from Jaws that the FS Cast for June was available to listen to. As always I clicked on the listen now option and it began playing in Windows Media Player. I am using the most recent version of Jaws on a Windows 11 desktop that I got last December.

The problem is and has been for months on this new computer that mid-way through the playing it just bombs out. The only message that is shown says something like, “Windows Media Player has encounter a problem with the file.” I did call FS tech support this afternoon and they recommended going to the Freedom Scientific web site and trying to play the FS Cast in my browser’s pod cast player. I have yet to give this a try only because its time consuming and I haven’t had time today to spend another half hour fiddling around trying to get it to play through to the end. Has anyone else encountered this problem and any thoughts on if just playing in the browser’s podcast player will be the fix? I know on my old Windows 10 computer I always could listen to the entire thing using Media Player. Not sure what the problem is now that could cause this.

Thanks for any input on this.

Eileen

I know on my old Windows 10 computer I always could listen to the entire thing using Media Player. Not sure what the problem is now that could cause this.

Thanks for any input on this.

I second that motion. I tried Firefox several years ago when Microsoft was still supporting Internet Explorer and found that JAWS' support for it wasn't very good compared to how well it supported IE.

I still think that JAWS hasn't supported any other browser as well as it did IE.

Right now, I'd say it is a don't download. The applications key doesn't
seem to work with jaws running, and neither do keys like the k for
play/stop in youtube. Applications key works fine in NVDA, go figure.

This is a very good illustration as to why a person should be using a browser like Microsoft Edge (Chromium edition) or Google Chrome. Time to modernize.

Hi again, Eileen.

Hi Curtis,

Haha, I don’t think I’ll wait on MS for a repair. You seem to be indicating that Media Player is the cause of the problem I’ve been having. What exactly is VLC Player? I should have stated in my previous message that I primarily am using MS Edge these days. I am not married to Media Player just want to find a reliable solution.

Thanks.

If you want to stick with Media Player, then you would be best served by working with Microsoft to fix the problem. I myself only use Media Player when I do not any other choice. For me, VLC Media Player works just fine. There will be a learning curve for VLC, however, so be forewarned.

Hi, Joseph. Open JAWS Settings, search for the word notify. The second result will be, Notify about new FSCasts. Make sure this is checked.

Agreed. Firefox broke something in terms of interacting with JAWS.
