Hello back,

Thanks for all the helpful replies. But as I was mentioning earlier, even though I am still using the October or November 2021 release of jaws 2022, I am no longer getting that automatic pop up window when my jaws first starts up asking me if I want to yes or no update my jaws to a newer release of jaws 2022?

I was until about 3 or 4 days ago getting this automatic pop up window asking me if I yes or no wanted to update my jaws every time when my jaws first started up, but now I am not. This has got me stumped because as I was saying, I am still using the last October or November 2021 release of jaws 2022. I have already checked in jaws under basics, and the automatic notification of jaws updates is yes checked.

I am really hoping that maybe someone has an idea on how I can get back this automatic pop up window asking me if I want to yes or no update my jaws to a newer release of jaws 2022 when my jaws first starts up? Would be very, very appreciative for any help on this matter. Much, much thanks in advance for any possible help on this.

With kindest regards,

Hank

Hello:

" Wait, didn't I hear on the FSCast that they had changed that behavior so
that you were notified of newer versions even if that newer version is a
major version upgrade and not just a point version update?"

If you hold the JAWS Home Annual License, what you say is accurate. But if you are on the traditional licensing scheme, you will not automatically be notified when a major update comes out—usually around the end of October.

Hello,
Now when my jaws first starts up I no longer get that notification
update pop up window in which I can select yes or no to update jaws
or not. And no I have not yet updated my October or November 2021
release of jaws 2022 to the latest release of 2022.
I have checked under options in jhaws and the automatic notification
of updates is checked.
This really has me stumped. Anyone maybe please have any ideas on
how I can get back this pop up window when I first start my October
or November 2021 release of jaws 2022? Much, much thanks in advance
for any help I can maybe get with this.

Right now, I'd say it is a don't download. The applications key doesn't
seem to work with jaws running, and neither do keys like the k for
play/stop in youtube. Applications key works fine in NVDA, go figure.

Hi again, Eileen. What I might suggest is that, when you get the notification of the latest FS podcast in JAWS, instead of clicking the play button, go to the FS podcast archives, find the latest episode, click the link, find the link inside, and right click it to download. If the file is sitting in your Downloads folder, and you press ENTER on the file to play it, it may play all the way through without any problems.

Haha, I don’t think I’ll wait on MS for a repair. You seem to be indicating that Media Player is the cause of the problem I’ve been having. What exactly is VLC Player? I should have stated in my previous message that I primarily am using MS Edge these days. I am not married to Media Player just want to find a reliable solution.

Hello All,

I updated my Jaws a few days ago and as usual, this morning when I turned on the computer I got the dialog from Jaws that the FS Cast for June was available to listen to. As always I clicked on the listen now option and it began playing in Windows Media Player. I am using the most recent version of Jaws on a Windows 11 desktop that I got last December.

The problem is and has been for months on this new computer that mid-way through the playing it just bombs out. The only message that is shown says something like, “Windows Media Player has encounter a problem with the file.” I did call FS tech support this afternoon and they recommended going to the Freedom Scientific web site and trying to play the FS Cast in my browser’s pod cast player. I have yet to give this a try only because its time consuming and I haven’t had time today to spend another half hour fiddling around trying to get it to play through to the end. Has anyone else encountered this problem and any thoughts on if just playing in the browser’s podcast player will be the fix? I know on my old Windows 10 computer I always could listen to the entire thing using Media Player. Not sure what the problem is now that could cause this.

Thanks for any input on this.

Eileen,

I thought I’d drop in to simply say that this is not a Media Player problem. I do not have problems and I prefer MS Media Player. Also, when streaming bits as these FS podcasts are streamed, it is commonly the host you use where you either have not enough bandwidth or your down stream / download connection is the problem with not being enough to keep the show in play. If Jaws is freezing up, it is the TTS software but with my pc, I’m still using Windows 11 with the latest Jaws version. I often do switch back to 2019 version when I am using zoom, for example, and never have a problem but often I do have issues with the current. Sometimes you can try different versions and figure out which is working best for whatever program you are using. Regarding the FS  podcast and Media Player, I truly do not believe it is Media Player since I use exactly what you have and without any problems.

Good luck,

Rick

I don't have a rebuttal, but I do have a warning and a lesson learned.

After I discovered what was causing all the problems I was having with Edge, I decided to restore all of my settings, then go into the restored configNames.ini file and remove the offending line. Then a monkey wrench got thrown into the works by JAWS itself when its import/export utility refused to import even one setting from the export file I had made just before uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS. Thankfully every Saturday I do system maintenance which includes making a backup using Backup & Restore. I recovered some of my settings from there. Now I will not trust the JAWS import/export utility for backups ever again, it almost cost me all my setting!

earlier this month regarding restoring settings.
This approach provides a more complete back-up then the one provided by
the Jaws Program back-up option:
The folder it's all under is called, enu.
It, appropriately enough, is a folder under settings.
It's path is
C:\Users\hp envy\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2022\Settings\enu
It's a good idea to periodically back it up; and certainly before one
attempts to make modifications such as those regularly mentioned on this
and other lists.
BTW, the credit for this suggestion goes to Brian Hartgen who brought it
up in his recent Jaws Muscles course which, of course, can be purchased
through his website.
The neat thing with Brian'scourses is not only you get the audio
presentations but also transcripts in .rtf format which can be quickly
searched when you wish to review something.
They are well worth the money.
Anyway, returning to the question, back up
enu
regularly for a more complete back-up then offered by JAWS itself.

Now, I would be curious if anyone has a rebuttle to the suggestion offered
by Brian Hartgen.
I use this approach regularly for the 2021 and 2022 JFW folders I have.
Any reason I shouldn't be doing this?

Hi Mike!

Nermin's message has your answer, but here it is so you don't have to go hunt for it!
--- from Nermin's message ---
if you want the settings to apply to all programmes, do the following.

1. Open Settings Centre by pressing JAWSKey+6 on the number row or selecting it using insert+F2 then going down the list till you find Settings Centre,
and press enter if you used the list method.

2. In the settings search box type "verbosity" without the quotes.

3. A list should appear containing "configure verbosity levels". Select the option by going up and down the list and pressing enter on the item.

4. once there, expand the settings using Right Arrow, which will give you the three options "beginner, Intermediate, and advanced".

5. Go to the one you're usually using, then Press the space bar. Do not use enter, it is important to press the space bar to open the configuration dialogue
for those options!

6. Locate the option that says "JAWS Message", and if it's unchecked, check it using the space bar.

7. Press OK to exit out of the configuration dialogue, then press OK again to exit the Settings Centre.

Now you should hear copied, cut, pasted, or copied selection to clipboard, depending on whether you've chosen long or short messages for your verbosity
levels.
--- end ---

Hi Bill!

I am one of those people who never gives up just because I've asked for help. So after sending my question, I continued trying to remember how to get those
messages back and eventually found it. But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate your answer because I really do, thanks a lot!

Hi everyone!
Apparently not all of your settings are stored in the settings folder. I
have restored my settings folder from before I followed Freedom
Scientific's advice to completely uninstall JAWS, then reinstall it,
because before I did all of this, whenever I'd do a clipboard function
(cut, copy, and paste) JAWS would say "cut", "copied", and "pasted". I
have tried everything I could think of to get it to say those again and
so far haven't found where it is or how to do it. I thought it would be
in speech verbosity, either I am not turning on the right option or it
is actually some where else. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

7. Press OK to exit out of the configuration dialogue, then press OK again to exit the Settings Centre.
Now you should hear copied, cut, pasted, or copied selection to clipboard, depending on whether you've chosen long or short messages for your verbosity levels.
Good luck,

Right now, I'd say it is a don't download.  The applications key doesn't seem to work with jaws running, and neither do keys like the k for play/stop in youtube.  Applications key works fine in NVDA, go figure.

Thanks Bill. Since it is only an easy command to unprotect something in word which is my primary program of concern, I shall probably leave things as they are, unless I get tempted to dive into the world of sin (smile).

Hi, Takis. I have had all categories of Protected View turned off for the last four years without any trouble. I do, though take care about which websites I visit, knowing that protected view isn't the only thing I have to worry about that relates to security concerns. As good as Microsoft Defender Antivirus is, I don't want to walk into the so-called lion's den counting on the fact that I haven't had any security threats up to now.

Hi all,

I almost completed Curtis’s instructions which were very easy and straightforward. But to be honest, I desisted from completing that when I saw all the caveats concerning files from the internet, etc. For sure, I would be nice not to have to unprotect each file, but I would dare question the wisdom of doing that, and would like the view of people who have a better knowledge on this to advise please.

                                                                Cheers to all,

Greetings:

The steps below will prevent Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from opening attachments in “protected” view. You only have to do these steps once for each program. If you don’t care much about spreadsheets or slides, then you can just do the steps below for Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Word Procedure

  1. Open Word into a blank document.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the Word Options menu.
  3. Press down arrow about ten times until you hear JAWS say Trust Center.
  4. Shift Tab three times to land on Trust Center Settings and then press Enter to open up Trust Center Settings.
  5. Now, press the Down Arrow key to get to Protected View and start tabbing. Here, you will find three checkboxes. Tab to each checkbox and uncheck the box by pressing Space.
  6. Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s all there is to it for Microsoft Word. If you don’t need to worry about spreadsheets or PowerPoint slides that are emailed to you as attachments, you can ignore the rest of this.

Microsoft Excel Procedure

  1. Open Excel into a blank document.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the Excel Options menu.
  3. Press down arrow about twelve times until you hear JAWS say Trust Center.
  4. Shift Tab three times to land on Trust Center Settings and then press Enter to open up Trust Center Settings.
  5. Now, press the Up Arrow key to get to Protected View and start tabbing. Here, you will find five checkboxes. Tab to each checkbox and uncheck the box by pressing Space.
  6. Finally, Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s it for Excel.

PowerPoint Procedure

  1. Open PowerPoint into a blank slide.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the PowerPoint Options menu.
  6. Finally, Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s it for Excel.

All done.

Cordially,

Curtis Chong

Hello Claudia:

There is a marked difference between PDF documents as opposed to Word or Excel files. With regard to the latter two types of files, you can unprotect these files after they are opened in protected view. There is a way to set Word and Excel up so that these files do not open in protected view. If you want those details, let us know.

As for PDF files, you can set security up in Adobe Acrobat so that Protected View is not used. However, to be realistic, I can’t recommend a specific solution unless I can get a sample of one of those protected documents—something which your employer would not allow.

Sorry.

Kindly,

Curtis Chong

Subject: Jfw and OCR?

Hi,

I am using the latest version of JFW annual with Windows 11.

My job protects all documents, so every time I open a Word, PDF, Powerpoint, Excel file, protection is enabled.

There is somewhere on the screen to disable all features.

I need to do this, in particular, with PDF files.

If I can’t disable protection in order to convert my file from PDF to Word, can I use Jaw’s OCR feature to read the document?

If so, how do I do this?

On my previous job, Jaws would automatically ask me if I wanted this to be done.

Or will it not OCR the document, since the PDF is most likely accessible, once I enable all features?

Thanks.

Claudia
