Happy Holidays one and all.

I am having trouble navigating Spotify with JAWS 2022.  Does anyone know of a list of keyboard shortcuts or scripts that make the music service more accessible? I have been on the hunt for this for months and I just can’t find anything.  I sent a message to Freedom Scientific technical support but of course no answer back.

Any help or suggestions are always welcome.  “Don’t use Spotify” is not an answer I would appreciate.

Hi, Takis. I have had all categories of Protected View turned off for the last four years without any trouble. I do, though take care about which websites I visit, knowing that protected view isn't the only thing I have to worry about that relates to security concerns. As good as Microsoft Defender Antivirus is, I don't want to walk into the so-called lion's den counting on the fact that I haven't had any security threats up to now.

Greetings:

The steps below will prevent Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from opening attachments in “protected” view. You only have to do these steps once for each program. If you don’t care much about spreadsheets or slides, then you can just do the steps below for Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Word Procedure

  1. Open Word into a blank document.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the Word Options menu.
  3. Press down arrow about ten times until you hear JAWS say Trust Center.
  4. Shift Tab three times to land on Trust Center Settings and then press Enter to open up Trust Center Settings.
  5. Now, press the Down Arrow key to get to Protected View and start tabbing. Here, you will find three checkboxes. Tab to each checkbox and uncheck the box by pressing Space.
  6. Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s all there is to it for Microsoft Word. If you don’t need to worry about spreadsheets or PowerPoint slides that are emailed to you as attachments, you can ignore the rest of this.

Microsoft Excel Procedure

  1. Open Excel into a blank document.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the Excel Options menu.
  3. Press down arrow about twelve times until you hear JAWS say Trust Center.
  4. Shift Tab three times to land on Trust Center Settings and then press Enter to open up Trust Center Settings.
  5. Now, press the Up Arrow key to get to Protected View and start tabbing. Here, you will find five checkboxes. Tab to each checkbox and uncheck the box by pressing Space.
  6. Finally, Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s it for Excel.

PowerPoint Procedure

  1. Open PowerPoint into a blank slide.
  2. Press Alt with F followed by the letter t to go into the PowerPoint Options menu.
  6. Finally, Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

There is a marked difference between PDF documents as opposed to Word or Excel files. With regard to the latter two types of files, you can unprotect these files after they are opened in protected view. There is a way to set Word and Excel up so that these files do not open in protected view. If you want those details, let us know.

As for PDF files, you can set security up in Adobe Acrobat so that Protected View is not used. However, to be realistic, I can’t recommend a specific solution unless I can get a sample of one of those protected documents—something which your employer would not allow.

Hi,

I am using the latest version of JFW annual with Windows 11.

My job protects all documents, so every time I open a Word, PDF, Powerpoint, Excel file, protection is enabled.

There is somewhere on the screen to disable all features.

I need to do this, in particular, with PDF files.

If I can’t disable protection in order to convert my file from PDF to Word, can I use Jaw’s OCR feature to read the document?

If so, how do I do this?

On my previous job, Jaws would automatically ask me if I wanted this to be done.

Or will it not OCR the document, since the PDF is most likely accessible, once I enable all features?

Thanks.

Gene Warner

Hi everyone!

Apparently not all of your settings are stored in the settings folder. I have restored my settings folder from before I followed Freedom Scientific's advice to completely uninstall JAWS, then reinstall it, because before I did all of this, whenever I'd do a clipboard function (cut, copy, and paste) JAWS would say "cut", "copied", and "pasted". I have tried everything I could think of to get it to say those again and so far haven't found where it is or how to do it. I thought it would be in speech verbosity, either I am not turning on the right option or it is actually some where else. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks!

I am not able to do anything in BitDefender. JAWS will read nothing. I had to use Be My Eyes just to be able to install it. I can right-click on a file or folder, and choose to scan with BitDefender, but the "Context menu Scan Results" are totally inaccessible. I cannot read any of the results. In addition, a BitDefender update window popped up, and again, I was not able to access the window in order to install the update. I tried NVDA, System Access, and Narrator, all with the same results.
Has anyone had any luck getting BitDefender to work with a screen reader in the Windows 10 environment? If not, I will be downgrading my subscription to just the version for the Mac, and will use Windows Defender on my Windows machine.
I am using the latest version of JAWS 2022 and Windows 10, Pro.

If you hold the JAWS Home Annual License, what you say is accurate. But if you are on the traditional licensing scheme, you will not automatically be notified when a major update comes out—usually around the end of October.

Hi.

Not sure I really understood the question. It shouldn’t’ make a difference where you copy the address from. You have three options:

Mbasic.facebook.com – most stripped down version of facebook web available. Lacks many features, and many others are only half working. Facebook will not fix it.

M.facebook.com – I guess it still works somewhat, not sure, haven’t tried it in a while – a bit less stripped down nowadays but still static compared with

www.facebook.com – the full facebook web experience. Not necessarily pleasant to use, but should be workable with your modern screen-reader.

There’s also an app for mobile users. It’s huge for some reason and I don’t want it on my phone, so I have never messed with it. I do use the messenger phone app, but put it to sleep recently as it seemed to be sucking up battery life even when not in use.

There is no new version.

There is mbasic.facebook.com, which is even more stripped down, and it is also somewhat broken.

Facebook has no interest in maintaining this stuff. Best you can do is file a report that something is not working.

Funny that the disability suppot person mentioned google, too. Do they think google owns facebook now?

I believe I have finally found the problem!

I don't know how it got there but there was an alias in the config names.ini file that renamed msedge to Microsoft Edge. Deleting that line resolved my
problems with Edge.

Now I just have to figure out how to turn off having JAWS say all the function keys and to restore having it say "cut", "copy", and "paste" like it
used to before all this began.

And this same gremlin may also be causing the new notification rules feature to not work.
The strange thing is that this seems to be some sort of conflict between JAWS and Edge because JAWS seems to be working normally everywhere else.
All this started about a month ago, possibly after some update to either Windows or JAWS.

The  ALT Left and Right commands don't work. Has this been eliminated in JAWS?

The only way I can go back to a previous page in /Edge is to move to the previous page within the Edge settings.

Does anybody have any idea how to correct this. I don't notice it so much in Chrome and Firefox.

It looks like I spoke too soon. After doing the JAWS repair, then restarting my PC,  the problem with the tabs was gone as well as
Insert+V from within Edge producing an unknown function call error was
also gone, I then played a game of Spoonbill Solitaire, I then went back into Edge to do some browsing, and both problems were back! Thinking that the game may have left the system in some unknown state that was affecting JAWS, I did a restart, but still those two problems remained.

Sometimes I think we should just dump all this technology, all too often it seems like we take a step forward, only to fall back two steps and land on our butts

Hi everyone!

Time was that in Microsoft Edge, when you used control+tab to switch
from one tab to another, JAWS would read the page title which made it
easy to find the tab you wanted, but now JAWS reads what ever is
where the cursor is. Is there a way to have JAWS read the page titles
like it used to or is this something that Freedom Scientific has to
fix themselves?

Thanks!

Hi Bill!

I wasn't idle, while restoring all of my application configuration files (.jcf) I found and remembered that the dictionaries are stored in .JDF files, so I got my dictionary back.

My other problem with Edge not working properly was apparently due to some component of JAWS that got corrupted that the repair didn't fix. I had to completely remove JAWS then reinstall it, remember to have the installer remove all the shared components as well as JAWS.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

I have never used Bit Defender, but I have tried quite a few anti virus programs and eventually gave up and just use Windows Defender (I think it's called Windows Security now) because it was the only one I found to be reasonably accessible.

Hi, Tammy. To cause pdf documents to not open in protected view,

1. Open Adobe DC Reader.

2. Go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.

If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow

down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."

Then uncheck these two options:

Enable Protected Mode at startup

Enable Enhanced Security.

Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told

that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other

changes first.

3. Now when you open a pdf document in Adobe Reader DC, documents will not open in Protected Mode.

Hello Claudia:

There is a marked difference between PDF documents as opposed to Word or Excel files. With regard to the latter two types of files, you can unprotect these files after they are opened in protected view. There is a way to set Word and Excel up so that these files do not open in protected view. If you want those details, let us know.

As for PDF files, you can set security up in Adobe Acrobat so that Protected View is not used. However, to be realistic, I can’t recommend a specific solution unless I can get a sample of one of those protected documents—something which your employer would not allow.

Sorry.

Thanks.

  6. Finally, Tab to and press Enter on the OK Button. Then, press Escape.

That’s it for Excel.

All done.
