Hi Stephen,

I called Vispero, who confirmed the extension is broken with NVDA and JAWS. The agent helping me said it looks like a Chrome update, or an update to the Wordle extension broke accessibility with multiple screen readers.  She advised trying the following link, while the extension is running.

https://www.possiblepromise.com/wordle

After configuring the 3 JAWS settings for this page, everything worked perfectly.  The problem is that the game on that page doesn’t appear to be synced with the NY Times page (e.g. yesterday’s word was already on the NY Times page.

The person at Vispero asked if I had contacted the developer of the extension; I hadn’t at that point, but have since posted a review in the Chrome Web Store, and sent an E-mail to the publisher via the Chrome Web Store.  Although there are 836 users of the extension, mine was the only review.  Perhaps others might submit a review and/or send a message to the publisher, in order to bring attention to the problem.

I updated JAWS 22 this morning so have the latest running on my Windows 10 laptop.  I wonder if something in the JAWS update negatively impacted the Wordle Chrome extension, because everything worked perfectly last night, prior to the update, but sadly that is no longer the case.

I confirmed the “Make Wordle Accessible” extension is added to Chrome, and that it is enabled.  However, when on the New York Times Wordle page, JAWS doesn’t report that it is active (can’t recall the exact wording of that).  I confirmed the 3 JAWS settings for that page are properly set.  I tried many different things like disabling the extension and then enabling it, removing the extension and adding it again, unloading JAWS and reloading it, restarting the computer, etc.  No success!

Any thoughts as to what is happening?  I guess I can call, but thought I’d check here first.

These aren't JAWS commands, but Windows'. They won't work if you've opened a new window, such as by pressing shift-enter. They work if you press enter on a link.

I have run into a problem of not being able to move back from one page to another.

The ALT Left and Right commands don't work. Has this been eliminated in JAWS?

The only way I can go back to a previous page in /Edge is to move to the previous page within the Edge settings.

Does anybody have any idea how to correct this. I don't notice it so much in Chrome and Firefox.

It looks like I spoke too soon. After doing the JAWS repair, then restarting my PC, the problem with the tabs was gone as well as
Insert+V from within Edge producing an unknown function call error was
also gone, I then played a game of Spoonbill Solitaire, I then went back into Edge to do some browsing, and both problems were back! Thinking that the game may have left the system in some unknown state that was affecting JAWS, I did a restart, but still those two problems remained.

Hi everyone!

Time was that in Microsoft Edge, when you used control+tab to switch
from one tab to another, JAWS would read the page title which made it
easy to find the tab you wanted, but now JAWS reads what ever is
where the cursor is. Is there a way to have JAWS read the page titles

Hi Dennis,

Jaws Quick Settings and Custommize Settings handles punctuation symbols differently.  Below is an explanation.

This is a note on the difference between changing punctuation settings in Jaws quick settings, Insert + V, & customize punctuation in the Settings Center default all applications.  They work backwards from one another.

When setting punctuation in Jaws quick settings, this controls the amount of punctuation JAWS will speak / recognize.  The default setting is most.  To hear less
punctuation spoken you would select some or none.

When making changes in the customize punctuation list, this basically tells Jaws how much of a selected punctuation mark to ignore.  If you do not want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the
" all " selection.  You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through.  They are none, some, most, & all.  In these selections they work
backwards than what you would think.  For example;  If you choose " none "
for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading.  On the other hand, if you choose the " all "
radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

Summary:  In short the Jaws quick settings tells Jaws what punctuation to recognize / speak, & in the Settings Center default all applications / Customize
Punctuation settings, tells Jaws what punctuation to ignore / not speak.  Hence, they work backwards from each other.

Hope this helps some of you understand the differences between the 2
punctuation setting options.
Take care.

Can someone try the following and see if you get the same reaction?

  1. Load the Settings Center and select Punctuation, then Customize Punctuation…
  2. 2.  You’ll be placed in the list of punctuation with the layout of
  3. Punctuation character, text name of that character, and the punctuation mode for that character
  4. Arrow down the list until you get to one of the following characters.
  5. Number, dollar, and, percent, at
  6. 3. Set the mode for these characters to “none,” then tab to and select Ok.
  7. Then tab to and select “Apply.”

4. Repeat step#1 and arrow dow the list.  Do those characters speak twice

So instead of

Number, the character itself,

Then number, the text name,

Then none, the mode,

I get the character announced twice, then the text name, then the mode, such as,

Number number number none

At at at none

Dollar dollar dollar none

Percent percent percent none

And and and none

Anyone else get this?

Hello List,

I am not sure if this is really a JAWS question but any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

First, I am using JAWS 2021 with Windows 10 and Edge browser.  Also, my innernet access is through an individual hot spot from AT&T which we have been using in our RV for five years without any real difficulty.

Recently I have been unable to completely download any book from the Bard main page.  It will get anywhere from 30 to 60% and then put up an error message saying “download error, title unable to download due to network error”.  I can’t figure out how to get any details about the network error.  When I go back to have it resume the download it doesn’t really resume but starts all over again and never makes it to the end.

Is this some network setting on my computer that might have changed during a windows update or is this possibly an issue with the type/level of internet service from AT&T?  I know that they have recently changed their plans and there seems to be a tiered selection around data/internet.

Any quick suggestions.

Is there a more efficient way to do this?

Hi Brenda,

I am not sure if this will be helpful or not. I have AT&T Internet. Several years ago AT&T Suddenly, randomly, blocked access to my work website. when I called them they told me that they thought it was spam or some malicious software because it took up so much data. After I assured them it was me, they unblock the website and all was back to normal. It might be worth a call to AT&T to see if they have blocked you for some reason.

I hope you find a solution soon.

Is this some network setting on my computer that might have changed during a windows update or is this possibly an issue with the type/level of internet service from AT&T?  I know that they have recently changed their plans and there seems to be a tiered selection around data/internet.

Any quick suggestions.

I have a similar odd message problem that only happens with NY Times newsletters. But I don’t have a Braille display so don’t know if JAWS is still reading.

That happens for me is that sometimes JAWS can read the entire message/newsletter but, more often, if I open a link from it, when I go back to the message to read another story, JAWS is silent.  Sometimes I can escape from the original message and start over but sometimes, I need to close Outlook and reopen it.

I am using latest JAWS 2022, Office 365 and Windows 10

Hi all,

I’ve noticed that sometimes when I open a message that Jaws goes silent but yet when I arrow through it the contents still show up on my braille display; any idea what could be causing this and what I could do to resolve this? It happens randomly which makes it weirder and harder to know when it’ll happen. Using latest versions of Jaws, Microsoft 365 and Windows 11.

Hi Bill and everyone else!

I just checked this and discovered that while the notification history itself is not backed up by the import/export utility, the notification rules are backed up.

Thanks for that! I was just wondering where those files were. I would
have expected the rules file to be in with my settings where they could
easily be backed up if desired.

If any of us should begin using the new Notification History and Rules
feature in JAWS 2022, and find that we have made changes that are
undesirable, here's how to set everything back to the defaults for
Notification History and Rules. I got this from Eric at FreedomScientific.

*To Remove Notification History And/Or Rules*

1. Open JAWS Menu with INSERT plus J.

2. Arrow down to Utilities sub menu and press ENTER.

3. Arrow down to Explore Utilities Folder and press ENTER.

4. Arrow down to Explore My Settings and press ENTER.

5. Press BACKSPACE to ascend one folder.

6. Find the folder called Notifications, and press ENTER.

7. To remove notification history, remove the following file,

Notifications.json

8. To remove notification rules, remove the following file,

notification.rules.json

Maddison,

Can you tell us what programs are being loaded in the System Tray?

Also, can you tell us what programs do you have pinned to your Taskbar?

It might be that you have unnecessary programs in the System Tray that you don’t need running and too many programs that are pinned to the Taskbar.
