Some pages were correct, some copied the right column and then the left. I couldn't get Jaws to read the pdf very well which is why I copied and pasted it into notepad. I tried the OCR and that didn't work well either. Sometimes it takes time to play around with the settings to get Jaws to read pdfs correctly. I do know that if the pdf is not a graphic that using the first option and changing the way it reads to left to right top to bottom usually works. If it is a graphic usually the OCR works. I have had to print them sometimes and scanning them back into the computer using Openbook.

Entertaining not being able to see, isn't it?

Karen,

I just spent around a dozen hours dealing with a PDF document conversion. I had all the issues you mentioned. I also found a very weird bug that I have seen before, where there are a number of miss-spelled words. In this document, the letter I was missing in random words, and for all occurrences of that word throughout the 68 page document. Adobe has tried to be more accessible, but their product seems to miss the mark. Thanks again for your recommendation; not sure why my Adobe was not already set correctly.

I have been partially successful in connecting my laptop within my network to the main PC in my home. I have got a slight snag, where the main PC is requesting log in information in order to connect to my lapptop. I am not sure whether this is supposed to happen. I will nedd to confirm this.

If you have already gone through the Acrobat accessibility settings  setup, there is one more setting you should fix to ensure PDF documents are accessible with a screen reader, and that is turning off protected view. David Kingsbury covers this in his book _The Windows Screen Reader Primer_, which can be downloaded here

I will add that there are a couple of other PDF accessibility issues with screen readers which David also discusses in his book, one of which is a reading order issue. If you have an issue where it sounds as if words are being smooshed together with no spaces between them, post again and I will explain about how to potentially fix that issue, also.

 

Here is the section heading and the instructions:

 

10.1.1

 

There is one more change to make. Disabling Protected view is absolutely crucial. Until you do this, you simply will not be able to read PDF’s with your screen reader. Steps are:

1.            Press Alt to open the menu, Right arrow once to the Edit menu, Up arrow to Preferences, and press Enter.

2.            This opens a categories list. Press S until you get to Security enhanced.

3.            Tab once to the Enable Protected view at startup checkbox and press the Spacebar to uncheck it.

4.            Tab to the OK button and press Enter.

5.            Pres Alt F4 to close Acrobat Reader and then reopen it. The application must be closed for this change to take effect.

I just spoke with Microsoft, and for now, there is another temporary solution to not being able to use the Quick Assist app with a screen reader. They told me that, with Narrator, it is usable with the following instructions:

 

1. Quit whichever screen reader you have running, unless your screen reader is Narrator.

2. Start Narrator with CONTROL plus WIN Key plus ENTER, unless Narrator is already running.

3. Open Quick Assist with CONTROL plus Win Key plus Q

I called the Microsoft Disability Assistance line, and I got an amence stroke of luck, an got the same person who helped me on Monday. I asked him, if he would be so kind, as to write down the steps to set up Remote Desktop for both the computer in my house and my laptop.

 

While composing this email, I checked to see if I got any new emails. One of the new messages, was from the Microsoft representative, listing the step-by-step instructions, for setting up Remote Desktop on a remote device, whether it be a laptop, smart phone  or, tablet.

 

Now I am going to see if I can get it all to work.

Hi, Dave. Until they actually get the update into public circulation, all Microsoft will be able to do is walk you through the process of setting up the remote between your PC and your laptop. Right now, they don't have any way of taking control of either computer to do the process for you. I really hope this Windows Assist problem gets sorted quickly.

Thank you for the clarrification. I need to contact the Disability Advice team later, to help me set up remote, Desktop between my main PC at home and my laptop, for when I need to travel.

 

I have just tried to use Quick Assist, with the same result I reported to the list this mormning.

 

I have just got home from a very nice meal with a friend at a local pub. I need to have a couple cups of coffee, before I call Microsoft at about 11:00 PM, UK time, before I go to bed. I will let you know how I get on later.

Hi, Dave. I just spoke with the Microsoft Disability Desk at 10:00 AM, Pacific Daylight Time. They told me that currently, the Quick Assist app is crashing for everyone. They told me that an update should be released by tomorrow that should fix both the crashing problem, and also the inaccessibility issue. I published a review on the Microsoft Store which delineates the issue, and states that Microsoft did not verrify that this app is accessible for screen readers before releasing it.

Hello Everyone:

 

An update on my initial posting!

 

All my systems are presently running the older version of Quick Assist.

 

Up to yesterday evening, when I opened Quick Assist on each of my computers, included in the update screen, there was a "Not Yet" button.

 

I have run Quick Assist on all the systems this morning, the "Not Yet" button, has disappeared.

 

It looks like Microsoft, are forcing users to update Quick Assist, regardless as to whether they wish to do so or not, even though Microsoft, kno the updated version of Quisk Assist is floored.

 

This now means, users cannot use the previous version of Quick Assist, if they need someone have access to there computer

 

Regardless as to whether screen readers users use the previous version of Quick Assist or the new version, as individuals who are visually impaired, in my opinion, we are  being right royally screwed by the arrogance of Microsoft.

HI,
I find that even with using adobe Acrobat Reader that I still have to
play around with the accessibility settings with some pdf files.
Others I have given up on and arrow down to them in my documents and I
think it is either application key or right mouse button and arrow
down to OCR and let it run and open it in a document.
