Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

While on the desktop, press ctrl-space to make sure nothing is selected.
Then open the applications menu and go to the view submenu. It says 'large
icons, small icons" and some other things. Keep arrowing till it says "show
desktop icons". This is a checkbox and should be checked.
Good luck!

When I press the combo win+m, Jaws says "Desktop" as you would expect.
However, none of the items show up; and if I press the associated letter or
number of a given shortcut, nothing happens.

When I go to

c:\users

all of the shortcuts show up in the desktop folders; and when I hit enter on
any item, the intended action occurs.

So, I'm guessing is that I somehow messed up a setting eliminating the
functionality of the desktop.

Anyone with an idea as to how to restore desktop.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have the option to show desktop icons unchecked in the view
menu of the desktop. Do the windows M then do control spacebar it should say
none selected. Then use the context key and arrow up or down to view hit
enter and check the option to show desktop.

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies.

Bill, your number 1 was my problem. A simple toggle straightened

Thanks to all and particularly to Bill for hitting upon the culprit

Figured it had to be something simple; and it was.

How, exactly?

I've been playing with this with NVDA since I don't have JAWS, and what's interesting to me is I can't seem to get into the Quick Assist dialog/pane unless I click into it, then everything begins reading exactly as I'd expect it would and I can navigate around as I'd expect.

But I can't come up with a way, via the keyboard, to issue an object navigation command that gets me "inside" what is already selected by default when focus is on the Quick Assist initial dialog.

I'll be curious to hear what Microsoft Accessibility has to say about this situation.  I'd not played with Quick Assist with a screen reader under the original version and given how little has changed about the look and feel of the "new" Quick Assist, this degradation in accessibility is surprising.

Andrew:

This morning, I called the MS Disability Assistance/Help line at 4:30 AM, UK time, this was because I had a louzy night's sleep. The representative downloaded the new version of Quick Assist on another machine, with the same result.

I performed a restore the computer to a previous date and time function. When the computer restarted following the restoration, to my dismay, the previous version of Quick Assist was not restored. Therefore, it seems, the new version of Quick Assist, once installed, is one of those updates, which cannot be undone.

Luckily, I created a complete image of the system drive last Thursday, using Image for Windows. Once I restored the image, I now have the original version of Quick Assist available to me.

One more thing, the person said that there was a problem with the new version, and the Quick Assist team were working to fix the problem.

My suggestion is therefore, people should not upgrade to the new version of Quick Assist, until Microsoft release a version which is fully accessible. If you have a need to use Quick Assist, when the open screen is displayed telling you about the new version, TAB to the "Not Yet" button and press the SPACE BAR, to activate it. The update reminder screen will disappear, and the original, accessible screen for the previous version will be displayed.

Hello everyone:

Has anyone on the list needed to use Quick Assist recently? I have! I got a prompt telling me there was a new release of Quick Assist, and I would need to get it from the Microsoft Store. My question is:

Has anyone who has limited or no vision on the list, successfully try and find and download the update to Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store. Personally, I had no success in downloading and applying the new update for this program.

I pose the following suggestion:

I would like anyone who has no vision or, very limited vision, try and successfully download the update for Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store. If anyone who is not vision impaired, please do not come in on this topic for at least 2 days, to see if muy challenge can be met. If anyone who is visually impaired, managed to do what I failed to do myself, will they plese enlighten me as to how they did it, with step-by-step instructions, so I can complete the update to Quick Assist. Whuy Microsoft did not include the latest update to Quick Assist as part of the Windows update process, will always be a mystery, except to Microsoft, of course.

moderated Re: Question regarding the latest update to Quick Assist

From NVDA user Kostadin Kolev, and the analogous technique could be used to get focus into the new Quick Assist window/pane with JAWS commands:
Here is how I solved the problem. While the focus was on the whole QuickAssist window, I've used NVDA's command to move the mouse cursor to the currently focused object (which in this case should be the whole QuickAssist window) and them simulated a single left mouse click. That moved the focus inside the QuickAssist window/document. This has to be done each time the QuickAssist program is launched, but it is still better than nothing.

I can get around in the dialog with a screen reader once I get into the dialog!

And then with Google Chrome, none of my keys are working at all. If I hit H on almost any website jaws will tell me that there are no headings, even though I know there are. I can’t get to edit boxes or item lists or anything, none of the hot keys are working at all. Any ideas?

Hi Bonnie,

I'm using Win 11 on an all-in-one computer so am not sure where the laptop will differ. I am able to rename files by pressing the applications key and then arrow down/up to rename and pressing enter. Then edit the file name as you like.

As for the other keys you mention they work as they are supposed to. Perhaps this is the difference with a laptop.

Thank you. I did try that, it’s simply not working. Also, the website issues are more than just the hotkeys. I can hear jaws make a popping sound when I get into an edit box, but when I try to type something I just get messages such as no lists found or no edit boxes found or whatever, just as if it’s not in an edit box at all. It’s very strange, I don’t know what’s happening. I’ll try to send Freedom scientific a help message, I’m just not sure when I can be home during working hours to work on this.
